You can use an older phone as a home security camera more safely if it still receives security updates, has a strong screen lock, runs a carefully vetted app with limited permissions, and connects through a secured network. Treat the setup as more than a phone: the app, any service account or cloud storage, remote-viewing devices, router, and camera placement can all affect privacy and security.
1. Check whether the phone is still suitable
Check the exact phone model and operating-system version against the manufacturer’s current security-support information before putting it online as a camera. Support depends on the model and vendor policy, not simply on how old the phone is. A phone that no longer receives security updates should not be treated as a safe internet-connected camera. The FTC notes that operating-system updates often include critical security patches and recommends installing them promptly or enabling automatic updates. Its camera guidance also recommends keeping camera software and viewing apps current: FTC phone security guidance and FTC camera security guidance.
- Install the latest operating-system update available for that specific phone.
- Set a strong screen-lock passcode; the FTC recommends at least six digits.
- Remove or sign out of personal accounts and apps the camera role does not need, such as email, payment, or photo accounts. This reduces unnecessary exposure if someone accesses the handset.
2. Choose a camera app and limit what it can access
Install an app from the phone platform’s official store, then review its developer, privacy policy, update history, and feature requirements. Understand where live video and recordings are stored, how remote access works, what account protection is available, and whether you can turn off features you do not need. Marketing terms such as “local storage” or “no cloud” are not, by themselves, a complete security assessment. No particular camera app has been independently evaluated here.
Grant permissions only when they support a feature you intend to use. Camera access is essential; microphone access may be needed for audio. For requests involving location, local network, photos or files, contacts, or notifications, look for a clear reason tied to a feature before allowing access. Permission names and controls vary by operating-system version and device maker.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
Review permissions on Android
- Open Settings → Apps → [camera app] → Permissions to review or change the app’s access. The wording can vary by phone maker and Android version. See Google’s Android app-permission instructions.
- On supported versions, use Settings → Privacy → Privacy Dashboard to inspect recent permission use. Google documents a seven-day history on Android 13 and a 24-hour history on Android 12; availability and labels vary. See Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions.
Review permissions on iPhone
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security, then choose a category such as Camera, Microphone, or Local Network to review app access. Apple’s instructions are at Control access to hardware features on iPhone.
- Watch the status indicators: a green indicator appears when an app uses the camera, including when it uses the camera and microphone together; an orange indicator means the microphone is being used without the camera.
- Consider enabling App Privacy Report to see how apps use granted permissions and their network activity. Details are in Apple’s information-access guidance.
3. Secure the app account and decide whether remote viewing is worth it
If the app uses an account, give it a unique password that you do not reuse elsewhere. Enable two-factor authentication if the provider offers it; do not assume a specific app supports it without checking that provider’s current documentation. Secure the accounts and devices used to view the feed, too.
Remote viewing adds an account and network path to video inside your home. If you do not need to check the camera when away, turn remote viewing off. If you do need it, check how the service protects live and recorded video, limit viewing to people who need access, and use HTTPS for web access where applicable. The FTC recommends looking for feed encryption and an option to disable remote viewing; do not assume that a particular app encrypts video unless its current documentation supports that claim.

Choose the camera’s field of view with care. Avoid bedrooms, bathrooms, neighbors’ private spaces, and other places where people reasonably expect privacy. Tell household members and guests about the camera as appropriate. The FTC specifically advises weighing privacy before enabling remote viewing, especially when a camera covers a private area.
4. Secure the Wi-Fi router and consider a separate camera network
- Replace the router’s default administrator credentials and use a strong Wi-Fi password.
- Keep router software current, enable its firewall, and use WPA2 or WPA3 Wi-Fi encryption.
- If your router supports it, put the camera on a separate guest or IoT network rather than the same network as computers and printers. Separation can reduce direct access between devices if one device or network is compromised; it does not block every possible attack.
- After isolation, verify that the camera app still works as intended. Network features differ by router, so consult its maker’s instructions.
These steps follow the FTC’s recommendations for securing home cameras and internet-connected devices at home.

5. Keep watch for unexpected access
Periodically check the app’s access history or service logs if available, along with the phone’s permission history and the router’s connected-device list. An unfamiliar IP address or access time that does not fit your normal use merits investigation. The FTC recommends checking camera logs for unexpected addresses or access times.
- From a trusted device, change the camera-service password if you suspect unauthorized access.
- Revoke unfamiliar sessions or viewers if the service provides that control.
- Turn off remote viewing while you investigate, and review connected devices on the router.
- Check the phone and app for available updates, then review their permissions and account settings.
The FTC’s guidance provides access-log and device-security advice, but these steps are practical precautions rather than a phone-camera-specific incident response procedure. CISA explains that encryption helps protect data stored on devices; use the phone’s built-in protections and passcode, and do not assume recordings or transmissions are encrypted by the app without support in its current documentation. See CISA’s device-data guidance.

What to compare before choosing a phone-camera setup
Whether you are weighing a repurposed phone, a dedicated camera, or camera apps, compare the same practical points rather than relying on a “secure” label:
- Ongoing support: whether the phone and app still receive updates.
- Video protection: where recordings are stored, whether video is encrypted in transit and at rest, and who controls the account or encryption keys.
- Remote access: whether it can be disabled, how viewers authenticate, and whether you can review access logs or restrict viewers.
- Data and permissions: what camera, microphone, location, local-network, storage, contacts, or account access the app requests and why.
- Network separation: whether the setup works on a separate camera network and what connections remain available from your main network.
- Practical fit: power needs, connectivity, storage limits, and whether the app behaves reliably for the monitoring task.
These are evaluation criteria, not a product ranking: no phone, router, accessory, or camera app was tested for this guide.
