1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProtect a PayFi crypto wallet by safeguarding its recovery phrase, checking every transaction before signing, and periodically reviewing token allowances. If a permission is unnecessary or untrusted, revoke it with a wallet or trusted chain tool. Revocation is an on-chain transaction, and it cannot protect funds if someone else has your signing key.
“PayFi” here means a crypto payment or finance context—not a specific service. The title does not identify a wallet or blockchain, so the approval steps below focus on the general EVM token-allowance model rather than a particular app’s menus.
What a token approval lets a dapp do
A token approval gives a contract or address permission to move specified tokens from your wallet. It is different from connecting your wallet to a dapp: a connection exposes wallet information such as the public address, while an approval grants an on-chain spending permission. Coinbase documents these as separate controls in its dapp permissions and token approvals guide.
Approvals are associated with a particular token and spender on a network. A large or unlimited allowance may let the spender move tokens later without asking you to approve each transfer. The permission can remain after you stop using the dapp. MetaMask explains the approval model and risks in its token approval guide; Binance also describes blockchain approvals and unlimited-allowance risk.

How to reduce risk before signing
Reach the real site
Open the dapp from a known official address or a bookmark you previously verified. Do not trust an unsolicited message, social post, or search ad as proof that a site is legitimate. Ethereum.org warns that scams target people at every experience level and recommends using official sites and trusted support channels in its scam help and reporting guidance.
Inspect the wallet prompt
Before confirming, check the network, token, spender or contract, and allowance amount. Make sure these details match the action you intended. If the wallet and token support a custom allowance, authorize only what the action requires rather than accepting an unlimited amount by default. FxWallet’s token approvals documentation describes custom and unlimited allowances and warns about risky or uncatalogued contracts.

Stop when the request is unexpected
Urgency, impersonation, unrealistic returns, unsolicited links, and an approval request unrelated to what you are doing are reasons to pause. MetaMask identifies these kinds of warning signs in its approval guidance. Do not sign merely because a page says the transaction is required to claim a reward or prevent an account problem.
Keep credentials private
Never share a wallet recovery phrase or private key with a person, website, or support agent. These credentials control the wallet; an API secret for a payment service is a different type of credential and should not be confused with a wallet recovery phrase. The Payfi authorization documentation concerns server-side API keys, not crypto wallet seed phrases: Payfi API authorization.

How to review and revoke token approvals
The exact menus vary by wallet and network. Use a wallet’s approval-management screen, or reach a chain explorer or revocation service through a trusted source. Ethereum.org lists Revoke.cash, Revokescout, and Etherscan Token Approval Checker as options for checking approvals. These are options, not endorsements: verify the domain, supported network, requested wallet connection, and transaction details before proceeding.
- Open an approval list. Use your wallet’s token-approval feature or a trusted tool that supports the network and token standard in question.
- Review each permission. Match the network, token, spender, and allowance against the protocol and action you recognize. Consider whether you still use and trust that spender.
- Choose permissions to remove. Revoke approvals you did not intend to grant, no longer need, or no longer trust. If you are uncertain about a spender, do not approve further transactions until you have verified it through the protocol’s official channels.
- Inspect and confirm the revoke transaction. Read the wallet prompt and check the network and fee before signing. A revocation is an on-chain transaction, so it may require the network’s fee token.
- Verify the result. After the transaction confirms, check the approval list again to ensure the allowance was removed or reduced as intended.
Wallet-native steps differ: MetaMask and Coinbase document approval review or revocation in their respective help pages. FxWallet says its approval list covers EVM networks and documents batch revocation and fees; do not assume those capabilities or network coverage apply to other wallets or tools.

Can an approval drain a wallet later?
It can put the approved token at risk if the spender is malicious or compromised and the allowance is large enough. The spender may be able to transfer tokens within that allowance without a fresh approval prompt. That does not mean every approval is malicious, but an old permission should not be treated as harmless just because you stopped visiting the dapp.
A 2022 study by Mingyi Liu and coauthors examined Ethereum ERC-20 approvals through July 31, 2021. In that dataset, the authors assessed 15.2 million of 25.4 million evaluated approvals—60%—as unlimited, and reported that 22% of users in their analyzed population had tokens at high risk of theft. These are historical, study-specific findings, not current rates for all Ethereum activity, all chains, or PayFi generally. See the study.

Does disconnecting a wallet revoke approvals?
No. Disconnecting ends or removes a dapp connection in the wallet interface; it does not by itself change an on-chain token allowance. Review and revoke the allowance separately if it is no longer wanted. Coinbase’s guide covers both dapp disconnection and token-approval management as distinct actions.
What to do if you suspect a compromise
If someone may have obtained your recovery phrase or private key, revoking approvals from that wallet is not enough: the person may still be able to sign transactions directly. Ethereum.org’s scam guidance advises moving remaining assets to a new secure wallet the attacker cannot access, then revoking approvals and securing linked accounts.
- Create a fresh wallet. Generate it using a trusted wallet setup process on a device you believe is secure, with a new recovery phrase that has never been exposed.
- Move remaining assets. Transfer assets from the potentially compromised wallet to the new wallet, taking care to use the correct network and destination address.
- Review old approvals. If safe and practical, revoke risky permissions from the old wallet. This can reduce allowance-based exposure, but it does not make a compromised key safe.
- Secure related accounts. Change credentials and review connected accounts or devices that could provide access to the wallet or its recovery information.
Should you use a hardware wallet for PayFi?
A hardware wallet is one way to store private keys with greater separation from an internet-connected device. It involves trade-offs in security and ease of access; IOSCO discusses private-key storage methods and this trade-off in its 2023 DeFi policy recommendations. It does not automatically reject dangerous transactions or erase existing allowances. You still need to inspect the spender, token, network, and amount before approving. No particular hardware model or PayFi service is specified here, so check that any device you consider supports the wallet and network you plan to use.
Common questions about fees and network coverage
Do I need ETH or another network token to revoke an approval?
A revocation is an on-chain transaction and may require a fee paid in the network’s fee token. Which token is needed depends on the network; because no PayFi wallet or chain is identified, a specific fee-token answer would be misleading. Check the wallet’s displayed fee and make sure the wallet has enough of the required token before confirming. Coinbase advises keeping enough funds to cover the network fee.

Do approval tools work on every chain?
No universal coverage is established here. FxWallet describes its approval list as covering EVM networks, while other wallets and tools may support different networks or token types. Confirm that a tool supports the exact network and token before connecting a wallet or submitting a transaction.
