Secure the email account tied to your exchange first, then harden sign-in, restrict withdrawals, and watch for unfamiliar activity. The controls below help reduce account-takeover and phishing risk, but exact options and recovery rules vary by exchange; check the current settings in your account.
1. Secure the email account linked to the exchange
Your inbox may receive login alerts and account-recovery messages, so protect it before changing exchange settings. Use a unique password and the strongest sign-in method your email provider supports. Secure the email account’s recovery options as well; otherwise, someone who can take over the inbox may be able to interfere with exchange recovery.
Coinbase and Kraken both advise protecting the email account associated with the exchange: Coinbase account-security guidance and Kraken security guidance.
2. Set a unique exchange password
Generate a password with a password manager and do not reuse it on email or any other site. Kraken’s current security guidance recommends at least 15 characters; that is Kraken’s recommendation, not a universal exchange standard. Coinbase publishes its own password requirements, so follow the rules shown by your exchange when setting one.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

3. Choose the strongest supported sign-in method
Prefer a phishing-resistant security key or passkey if your exchange supports it for sign-in and the sensitive actions you need to protect. Coinbase recommends security keys or passkeys for two-step verification; Kraken recommends passkeys and says they resist phishing; Binance lists passkeys and security keys among its account-security options. Availability and recovery behavior differ, so check what your exchange supports before relying on a method.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
If you use an authenticator app, protect its setup or backup material offline. Consider whether codes are synced across devices and what happens if you lose access to the phone. SMS may be available as a fallback, but Kraken’s guidance treats it as a weaker option than passkeys. No authentication method is risk-free: weigh phishing resistance alongside device availability and recovery.

4. Limit withdrawals and protect account changes
If your exchange offers withdrawal address allowlisting or whitelisting, enable it and approve only addresses you control. Check how the exchange handles adding or changing an address, whether there is a waiting period, and whether two-step verification applies to address changes as well as withdrawals.
- Coinbase: Its allowlisting guidance says newly added addresses have a 48-hour hold while allowlisting is enabled. The setup process can also include an initial window that affects when you can use the feature. Check the current instructions before making a time-sensitive withdrawal. Coinbase address allowlisting.
- Kraken: Its funding two-factor-authentication guidance warns that withdrawal 2FA does not stop a user or attacker from adding a withdrawal address. Treat address management as a separate control, not as something withdrawal confirmation alone necessarily protects. Kraken funding 2FA.
These are platform-specific mechanics, not guarantees that every exchange’s allowlist works the same way. Binance also describes account-security options in its security guidance; check the controls available in your own account.

5. Avoid phishing and fake support
Open the exchange using a saved bookmark or its official app rather than a link in an unexpected message. Never share your password or verification codes, install remote-access software because a stranger asks you to, or send cryptocurrency to an address provided by someone claiming to help.
Coinbase says its staff will not ask for passwords, two-step codes, remote access, or transfers to a specific address. It states: “Coinbase staff will never ask you to send cryptocurrency to external addresses.” Read Coinbase’s phishing guidance, and consult the account-security guidance and Kraken security guidance for platform-specific advice.

6. Review access and respond quickly to suspicious activity
Check the exchange’s session or connected-device list and revoke access you do not recognize. Keep security alerts enabled and review them. If you see an unauthorized login, change both the exchange and associated email passwords, then contact support through the exchange’s official help center and follow its compromised-account instructions. Do not use a support link supplied by the person or message that alerted you.
Kraken, Coinbase and Binance provide platform-specific security information: Kraken, Coinbase and Binance.
Use this checklist when reviewing your account
- Protect the email account used for exchange access and recovery.
- Replace reused passwords with unique, password-manager-generated credentials.
- Enable a passkey or security key if supported; otherwise choose the strongest available method and protect its recovery material.
- Turn on address allowlisting if offered, and verify how address changes and withdrawals are protected.
- Use the official app or a bookmark, and treat requests for codes, remote access, or crypto transfers as a warning sign.
- Review active sessions and alerts; revoke unfamiliar access and use official support if you suspect compromise.
Kraken’s security page reports an update of September 30, 2026, and Binance Academy’s checklist reports an update of June 26, 2026. The Coinbase support pages and Kraken funding-2FA page do not establish publication dates here. Because settings and rules can change, confirm current controls and instructions directly in your exchange account.
