Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To find a moment in a video without knowing its filename, use a search tool that indexes the kind of information you remember: visual content, spoken words, or file metadata. First analyze or index the footage, then search with a descriptive phrase and check the returned timestamps. AI search can surface likely matches, but it does not guarantee that every moment was found.
Choose the search mode that matches what you remember
“AI video search” can mean several different things. A tool may analyze video frames, transcribe speech, filter file properties, or compare one clip with another. Those methods answer different questions.
| What you remember | Search mode to try | Example query or filter |
|---|---|---|
| A scene, subject, action, place, or visual mood | Visual or semantic search | “A person opening a red umbrella on a rainy street” |
| A phrase, topic, or words spoken | Transcript or speech search | Search the exact phrase, or a distinctive part of it |
| A known file property | Metadata filters | Filter by frame rate, file type, label, or another indexed property |
| A similar example clip | Reference-video search | Provide a clip and search for visually similar footage |
Semantic search is useful when the concept matters more than the exact wording. Transcript search is usually the more direct route for remembered dialogue. Metadata filters narrow results by known properties, but do not identify what happens in a scene by themselves.
Pick a tool based on where your footage lives
Premiere project: search inside the editing workflow
Adobe documents media intelligence search in Premiere. Its results can include Visuals, Audio, Text, and Metadata, and metadata filters can be stacked with up to eight filter rules. The feature is scoped to Premiere projects, not automatically a universal index of every video on your computer. Adobe says the footage, analysis data, and searches for this feature remain on the computer, with its models installed locally. See Adobe’s Premiere media-search help, last updated June 2, 2026.

Adobe recommends descriptive, multiword searches and trying alternate phrasings. Its documentation says visual search is currently English-only and can be less effective for small details or fast motion.
Local desktop library: check platform and file support first
Scenelet describes a Windows app that indexes files on the PC and returns natural-language matches with thumbnails and timestamps. Its vendor page lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM, and says searches work offline and processing stays on-device. These are vendor claims; check the current requirements, compatibility, licensing, and privacy terms on Scenelet’s site before relying on them.

Managed or custom archive: consider implementation-oriented systems
For a larger archive or a tailored workflow, Intel’s Open Edge Platform documentation version 2026.1 describes a configurable pipeline that ingests footage, creates embeddings, retrieves candidates through a vector database, and can add generation or reranking components. It supports self-hosted or on-premises deployment. NVIDIA VSS documents searching video files or streams for actions and events, visual attributes, combined queries, and image-based matches, with timestamped results and source or time filters. These are implementation options, not necessarily ready-to-use desktop apps for a casual search.

One supplied video: analysis is not the same as a library index
Gemini’s video-understanding API can analyze a video supplied to it and answer questions about that video. Google’s separate File Search documentation says audio and video formats are not currently supported, so File Search should not be treated as a ready-made persistent index for a folder or video library. See Google’s video-understanding documentation and Google’s File Search documentation.

Search a video library step by step
- Describe the target. Decide whether you remember an image or action, spoken words, or a file property. Choose visual, transcript, or metadata search accordingly. If a tool offers reference-video search, use that when you have an example clip.
- Confirm scope and compatibility. Check whether the tool searches an open editing project, selected local files, an uploaded collection, a server archive, or a supplied video. Verify your operating system and file formats before committing time to indexing.
- Analyze or index the footage. Wait for the tool to finish its background analysis or ingestion. Meaning-based retrieval typically depends on an index created from frames, transcripts, metadata, or embeddings; adding a chat box alone does not make unindexed files searchable.
- Write a specific, multiword query. Describe the subject and action, then add useful context such as location, lighting, or camera angle. For example, “a cyclist turns left at a wet intersection at night” is more informative than “bike.” Adobe recommends trying different phrasings if a query misses.
- Open the candidate at its timestamp. Check the moments around the result rather than relying on a thumbnail or similarity rank. Confirm that the scene or phrase is actually present and that the surrounding context fits.
- Refine if needed. Try a different wording or search mode, or narrow by source, time range, and metadata filters where available. A visual reference can help when the tool supports reference-clip search.
Understand what results can and cannot establish
A ranked match is a candidate, not proof that the scene is present or that all matching scenes have been found. NVIDIA VSS describes cosine-similarity thresholds and notes that useful thresholds vary with video content; a match score should not be read as the probability that the result is correct.
Different indexing approaches also have different blind spots. Adobe says its visual model analyzes a smaller version of the footage as a sequence of still images, which can make small details and fast motion harder to find. Google documents a static video-analysis mode that samples one frame per second and warns that fast action may lose detail at that rate. Google also documents an agentic mode for supported models that navigates video on demand; check its current model and processing availability before choosing it.

NVIDIA Research’s SIL-Wheel documentation distinguishes semantic search against video embeddings from caption-based search and frame-by-frame visual search. Use semantic embeddings for visually meaningful concepts, captions when text descriptions are likely to capture the target, and frame-level visual search when looking for a particular object in a frame. SIL-Wheel also documents text-to-video and video-to-video modes. See NVIDIA Research’s SIL-Wheel documentation.

Data handling depends on the specific tool and feature. Adobe says the footage, analysis data, and searches for its Premiere media-intelligence feature remain on the computer. Scenelet says its app works offline and processes locally. Those statements apply to the named products and features; they do not establish how other video-search tools handle footage. For any service, check whether indexing or queries leave your device, how long uploaded files or derived data are retained, and whether you can delete them.
Troubleshoot missed or weak matches
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No useful results for a visual description | The index may not be complete, or the query may be too vague or use wording the model does not associate with the scene. | Confirm analysis has finished, describe the action and context in several words, and try a different phrasing. |
| The exact spoken line is missing | You may be using visual search, or the tool may not have transcribed the relevant audio. | Switch to transcript or speech search, check whether audio analysis is complete, and try a distinctive phrase or shorter excerpt. |
| A tiny object or brief movement is missed | Frame sampling, reduced analysis resolution, or fast motion can make details difficult to detect. | Search for the broader scene, inspect nearby timestamps, and use frame-level or reference-image search if available. Do not assume a broad semantic search can reliably find a fleeting detail. |
| Results look similar but are wrong | Similarity ranking finds candidates; scores are not correctness probabilities. | Open each result in context, adjust the query or filters, and verify important findings manually. |
| Some files do not appear in search | The format may be unsupported, the files may be outside the indexed scope, or ingestion may have failed. | Check the product’s current format list and library scope, then confirm the files completed indexing. |
Choose by search mode, scope, and control
Before indexing a large collection, compare the options on the points that affect your workflow:
- Search signal: visual concepts, dialogue, metadata, reference images or clips, or a combination.
- Library scope: one project, selected local files, a supplied video, or an archive or stream.
- Platform and formats: supported operating systems and file types for the exact version you plan to use.
- Processing and privacy: local, cloud, self-hosted, or on-premises analysis, including how files and derived data are handled.
- Indexing and review: whether analysis must finish first, whether results include timestamps, and whether filters or a second verification stage are available.
There is no single best fit for every library: a Premiere user, someone searching local Windows files, and an organization building an archive search pipeline have different requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
