A screenshot captures what is visible on your display at that moment. It is different from downloading the original picture embedded in a webpage: a screenshot includes the surrounding interface, while downloading preserves the source image file when the site permits it. The right capture method depends on your device, operating-system version, model, and keyboard layout.
Start with the built-in feature below. After capture, use the preview or screenshot app to crop, annotate, save, copy, or share the image.
Choose the method by device

Protected video, banking, enterprise, or other restricted apps can block capture. A shortcut that works on one model may do something else on another.
How to screenshot on Windows
Use Snipping Tool
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Choose the capture mode offered by your Windows version, such as rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform.
- Select the area or window. A full-screen capture happens immediately; a region capture requires dragging around the content.
- When the Snipping Tool window opens, crop or mark up the image.
- Use Save to choose PNG, JPEG, or another format offered by the current app, or use Share to send it to another application.
Windows versions change the Snipping Tool layout and shortcut behavior. If a shortcut does not open it, launch the app directly and follow the controls shown in your installation. The capture window is the reliable place to confirm whether the image was saved.

Copy instead of saving a file
If your Windows capture interface offers a copy command, copy the result and paste it into an email, document, chat, or image editor. This is useful when you need a one-time image and do not want to create a file.
How to screenshot on a Mac
Capture the whole display, a window, or a selection
- Use macOS Screenshot shortcuts to choose a full-screen capture, a window capture, or a selected rectangle. The exact shortcut is shown in Apple’s Screenshot controls and can vary with system settings.
- After capture, use the thumbnail that appears near the edge of the screen. Click it quickly to crop, draw, add text, or share.
- Let the thumbnail disappear to keep the default file, or open its context menu to choose another destination such as the Clipboard.
Some applications, including Apple TV, may refuse screenshots of their windows. If a capture produces a black area or no image, test another window and check the application’s restrictions rather than repeatedly changing the shortcut.
Find the saved Mac image
The default destination is controlled by Screenshot options. If you cannot find the file, open Screenshot controls and check the selected Save to location. A Clipboard capture will not appear on the desktop; paste it into an image editor or document to save it.
How to screenshot on an iPhone
iPhone models with Face ID
- Press the Side button and either Volume Up or Volume Down at the same time.
- Release immediately. A thumbnail appears.
- Tap the thumbnail to crop, draw, add text, or share, or swipe it away to keep the capture for later.
iPhone models with a Home button
- Press the Side (or Top) button and the Home button together.
- Release immediately and use the thumbnail editor or sharing controls.
Use the combination that matches the physical buttons on your phone. If you press too long, the phone may show the power or emergency screen instead.

Save and share
Edited captures are saved in Photos unless you choose another destination from the share sheet. In apps that support a full-page capture, open the thumbnail editor and look for the Full Page option; availability depends on the app and content.
How to screenshot on a Chromebook
- Open the Chromebook screenshot tool from the shelf or quick settings, or use the keyboard shortcut shown by your device.
- Choose full screen, a window, or a selected region. The same tool also exposes screen recording controls.
- Complete the selection. Review the preview, then edit, delete, or share it.
Chromebooks normally place captures in the Files app’s screenshots location. If an external keyboard does not have the Show windows key, Google identifies Ctrl + Shift + F5 as an alternative. Keyboard layouts and managed-device policies can change available shortcuts, so use the on-screen tool when a key combination fails.
How to screenshot on Android phones and tablets
Standard capture
- Press Power and Volume Down simultaneously, then release.
- If that does not work, hold the Power button for a few seconds and tap Screenshot in the power menu.
- Tap the preview to edit, crop, mark up, or share. If neither method exists, check your phone manufacturer’s support instructions; manufacturers can replace the standard controls.
Take a scrolling screenshot
On Android 12 and later, many screens that allow scrolling support an extended capture:
- Take a normal screenshot.
- Tap Capture more in the preview.
- Move the crop guides to include more of the page, then save or share.
This is not universal. Apps can disable scrolling capture, and a screen that does not expose a scrollable region will not offer Capture more.

Find, edit, and share Android captures
- In Google Photos, open Collections > On this device > Screenshots.
- Open an image to crop, annotate, edit, or share it.
- On older devices without Google Photos, open the manufacturer’s Gallery app and its Screenshots album.
Screenshot versus downloading the original picture
Use a screenshot when you need the visible page, an error message, a chart, a game state, or a record of how content appeared. Use the site’s Download or Save image command when you need the original resolution, metadata, transparency, or an editable source file. A screenshot can include browser controls, compression, scaling, and cursor-free rendering that are absent from the original.
If a webpage prevents saving, respect its permissions and terms. A screenshot does not grant rights to redistribute copyrighted material.
Improve the result before saving
- Capture only what matters: select a window or region instead of the entire desktop when privacy or readability matters.
- Hide private data: close notifications and mask account numbers, addresses, and unrelated tabs before capturing.
- Use the preview: crop, highlight the relevant control, and add a short label so another person can understand the image.
- Choose a suitable format: PNG preserves sharp text and transparent areas; JPEG is smaller for photographic content. Use the options your built-in tool provides.
- Check scale: a high-density display can create a larger image than expected. Resize a copy if a service has upload limits.
Troubleshooting failed screenshots
The shortcut does nothing
Confirm the device model, operating-system version, and keyboard layout. Try the visible Screenshot or Snipping Tool interface instead of a shortcut. On Android, try the Power-menu command; on Chromebook, use the on-screen screenshot tool or the documented alternative for an external keyboard.
The result is black or blocked
The app may restrict screenshots for security or licensing reasons. Test a normal, unrestricted window. Apple also documents apps, including Apple TV, that may not allow screenshots of their windows.

The image cannot be found
Check the capture app’s configured destination, the Clipboard, the Photos Screenshots collection, or the Gallery Screenshots album. A thumbnail that was copied rather than saved will not create a desktop file.
A scrolling capture is missing
Android scrolling captures require Android 12 or later and a screen that supports scrolling. Update the device where possible, take a normal capture, and look for Capture more. If the app does not expose it, capture several sections and combine them in an editor.
Notifications or sensitive information appear
Dismiss notifications, close unrelated windows, enable a privacy or do-not-disturb mode, and crop or mark out details before sharing. Re-capture rather than relying on irreversible blur if the information is highly sensitive.
