What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Quick answer: In Firefox desktop, right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS. Drag over the area you want, adjust the handles, then copy or download the PNG. In Microsoft Edge, open Screenshot from the page menu or press Ctrl+Shift+S, choose Capture area, select the region, and copy, annotate, or save it.
The correct method depends on whether you need a drawn rectangle, a specific HTML element, the visible viewport, or the entire page. The instructions below cover each supported case without requiring an extension.
Choose the type of capture first
“Part of a web page” can mean several different outputs. Selecting the right mode prevents cropped text, missing content, or an unnecessarily large image.
| What you need | Best method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A custom rectangle around anything visible | Firefox Take Screenshot or Edge Capture area | A manually selected region |
| One complete page element, such as a card or article | Firefox Developer Tools Screenshot Node or the Web Console selector command | The element and its descendants, without surrounding page content |
| Exactly what is currently on screen | Firefox Save visible | The current viewport |
| The whole long page | Firefox Save full page or Edge full-page Screenshot | Content below the scroll position as well as the visible area |
A region capture is not the same as a viewport capture or a full-page capture. Decide which output you need before selecting an area.

Capture a rectangular area in Firefox
Firefox desktop has a built-in screenshot tool that supports both a freeform rectangle and automatic highlighting of page parts.
- Open the page in Firefox and right-click an empty part of it. Select Take Screenshot. If the context menu is awkward, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- For a custom rectangle, click and drag across the area. Release the pointer when the selection covers the content you want.
- Use the selection handles to resize the rectangle or reposition it. You can also move the pointer over the page and click a region that Firefox highlights automatically.
- Choose Download to save the image, or choose Copy to place it on the clipboard for another app.
The downloaded file is a PNG and goes to Firefox’s normal download location. Firefox also offers Save visible for the current viewport and Save full page for the complete document. Those options are alternatives to drawing a rectangle; they do not limit the result to your selection.
Keyboard and accessibility details
Mozilla documents keyboard navigation and resizing for the selection. On Wayland, moving the crosshair itself does not work; use the other documented keyboard controls to create and adjust the selection. If the shortcut does nothing, open the page’s context menu and use Take Screenshot instead, then check that Firefox is current and that another application has not intercepted the key combination.
Capture a rectangular area in Microsoft Edge
Edge calls its built-in tool Screenshot (also known as Web Capture in some menus). Availability and exact placement can vary by device type, market, and browser version.

- Open the web page. Right-click it and select Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S. Edge also exposes the command from its Settings menu.
- Choose Capture area. Microsoft’s U.S. tutorial dated January 2, 2024 describes this as the left option in the tool.
- Drag across the part of the page you need. Adjust the selection before committing it.
- Use Copy to place the image on the clipboard, or choose the markup controls to draw and annotate it before saving.
Edge’s Screenshot tool can also capture a full web page, including material below the visible scroll area. If you do not see the command or the labels differ, your Edge build or market may not have the same feature set; update Edge and consult Microsoft’s current feature page rather than relying on a shortcut from another version.
Capture one precise page element with Firefox Developer Tools
A drawn rectangle includes whatever happens to be under it. If you need the complete DOM element—such as one product card, a table, or an article section—Firefox can capture the node itself.
Inspector method
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and select the Inspector.
- In the HTML pane, locate the element you want.
- Open that element’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.
- Firefox saves the image in your Downloads folder.
This method follows the element’s rendered bounds, so it is useful when the target is difficult to outline manually or extends beyond the current viewport.
Web Console method
Technically comfortable users can use Firefox’s Web Console helper:

:screenshot --selector "CSS_SELECTOR"
Replace CSS_SELECTOR with a selector for the element. The selector capture includes that element and its descendants. The helper also documents options for a delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, full-page capture, and clipboard output. For example, a class selector might look like this:
:screenshot --selector ".checkout-summary" --filename summary.png
Quote selectors containing spaces or special characters. If the command reports that no element matches, inspect the page again: the element may be inside an iframe, created only after a script runs, or addressed by a different class than expected.
Save only what is visible or the entire page
Visible viewport
In Firefox’s screenshot panel, select Save visible when you want exactly the currently displayed viewport. It is useful for documenting a state without including content below the fold.
Full page
Choose Save full page in Firefox, or the full-page option in Edge, when the capture must include content that would otherwise require scrolling. Full-page rendering can be affected by lazy-loaded images, sticky headers, animations, and pages that change while they are being captured. Let the page finish loading and pause animated content when possible.
Copying, saving, and annotating the result
- Clipboard: Firefox and Edge can copy the capture so you can paste it into an email, document, chat, or image editor.
- File: Firefox downloads a PNG from its screenshot tool. Edge lets you save after copying or marking up the image.
- Markup: Edge describes drawing and annotation before copying or saving. Firefox’s built-in region tool is focused on selection and output; use an image editor afterward if you need arrows, boxes, or redaction.
- Privacy: Check the selected pixels before sharing. A rectangle can include account names, notification text, URLs, or other information outside the intended target.
What to do when the browser command is missing
Browser features are version- and platform-dependent. The documented steps here establish built-in region capture for Firefox desktop and Edge, but not current equivalent workflows for Chrome, Safari, iOS, Android, or every Edge installation. Do not assume a desktop shortcut works on a phone.

Automate screenshots without driving a browser
For one-off captures, Firefox or Edge is simplest. For repeatable captures in a build, documentation pipeline, monitoring job, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is the first service to try when you need clean output: it removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed; and its lowest paid plan is $5 for 3,000 shots.
Its API accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. You can select an element by CSS selector, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, load lazy images for full-page captures, set a viewport or one of 12 device presets, use retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, click an element, hide selectors, block ads/trackers/requests/resource types, provide headers, cookies, a user agent or Authorization, set timezone and geolocation, use transparent backgrounds, resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed image links, run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, query usage, and use the OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration.
Failed bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Use one GET request (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before the shot, cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed, and an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots with take_screenshot, inspect pages with get_page_info, and create PDFs with capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free ScreenshotNeo plan.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The shortcut opens another tool or does nothing
Shortcuts can be claimed by extensions, desktop utilities, or a different browser. Use the page’s right-click menu, then disable conflicting shortcuts or update the browser. On macOS, use Command rather than Control for Firefox.

The selection is the wrong size
After dragging, use the handles to refine the rectangle. If automatic highlighting selected the wrong component, move the pointer away and draw manually. Zoom level and device pixel ratio can change apparent dimensions; select the visual area you actually intend to share.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePart of the page is blank
The content may be lazy-loaded, blocked by a script, inside an iframe, or still loading. Scroll through the page once, wait for images to appear, and retry. For a specific element, use Firefox’s Inspector or selector command. For automated work, configure a selector wait or network-idle wait in ScreenshotNeo.
The full-page image repeats a header or misses content
Sticky navigation and dynamically changing pages can produce repeated or shifted regions during a full-page render. Capture a smaller viewport region, temporarily hide the sticky selector in an automated capture, or use an element screenshot instead.
Text is too small or blurry
A manually selected screen region has the resolution of the rendered page. Increase the browser zoom before selecting, choose a higher device-pixel ratio in Firefox’s advanced command, or request retina scale through an automated API.
The saved image contains sensitive information
Cancel and redraw the selection rather than cropping later if possible. Inspect the final file at full size, remove metadata or redact details in an editor, and use a private transfer method when sharing.
Which method should you use?
| Need | Recommended choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast rectangle on a desktop | Firefox Take Screenshot | Supports drag selection and automatic page-part highlighting, plus copy or download. |
| Rectangle plus built-in annotation | Edge Screenshot | Capture area can be marked up before copying or saving. |
| Exact DOM element | Firefox Screenshot Node | Captures the selected node and descendants rather than an approximate rectangle. |
| Repeatable, clean, or API-driven captures | ScreenshotNeo | Removes common overlays, bills only clean shots, and supports API, bulk, PDF, and MCP workflows. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture an element that extends below the viewport?
Yes. Firefox’s Developer Tools Screenshot Node captures the selected element rather than only the visible rectangle. For a long document, use a full-page mode or an automated element capture configured for the page’s loading behavior.
Why does my screenshot include a cookie banner?
Browser tools capture what is rendered. Dismiss the banner before selecting, or use ScreenshotNeo, which accepts the consent banner and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture.
Does a screenshot preserve links or selectable text?
No. Firefox and Edge produce an image. If you need searchable or interactive content, save the page or export a PDF instead of treating the screenshot as the source document.
Can I take a partial screenshot from a phone browser?
The documented steps here cover Firefox desktop and Microsoft Edge. Mobile browser and operating-system controls vary, so use the current support documentation for your specific phone and browser.
