Open the Instagram Story, post, Reel, profile, or message you want to save, then use your phone’s built-in screenshot shortcut. On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together. On an iPhone with a Home button, press the side or top button and Home together. On Android, press Power and Volume Down together; if that fails, hold Power and tap Screenshot. Your capture is saved in Photos on iPhone and in Photos or a Screenshots folder on Android.
Instagram generally does not notify someone when you screenshot a regular Story, feed post, Reel, profile, or ordinary direct message. Temporary Direct content—such as disappearing or view-once photos and videos, and some Vanish Mode messages—is the important exception: Instagram can alert the sender when a screenshot or screen recording is detected. Because app behavior can change, check the current conversation labels before assuming a temporary message is private from screenshots.
How to screenshot Instagram on an iPhone
iPhone with Face ID
- Open Instagram and display the exact Story, post, Reel, profile, or message you want to capture.
- Quickly press and release the side button and volume up button at the same time.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner if you want to crop, mark up, copy, share, or delete the image. Otherwise, let the thumbnail disappear.
Apple’s documented instruction is to “quickly press and release the side button and the volume up button at the same time.” Pressing and holding both buttons instead of releasing them quickly can open the power-off or Emergency SOS screen.
iPhone with a Home button
- Show the Instagram content on screen.
- Quickly press and release the side (or top) button and the Home button together.
- Use the preview thumbnail to edit or share the capture.
Find and edit the screenshot
iPhone screenshots are automatically saved to the photo library. In the current Photos app, go to Photos → Collections → Media Types → Screenshots. Open a shot to crop out Instagram’s navigation bar, notification banners, or other unrelated interface elements. Markup can add arrows or redaction blocks before you share it.
Can an iPhone capture a whole Instagram page?
iPhone’s Full Page option is intended mainly for supported long pages, such as webpages. Instagram Stories and Reels are moving, app-controlled views, so do not expect a Full Page control for them. For a long profile or text-heavy screen, capture several images and crop them consistently rather than assuming Instagram supports one continuous image.

How to screenshot Instagram on Android
Standard Android shortcut
- Open the Instagram item and pause it at the frame you need.
- Press Power and Volume down at the same time, then release.
- Tap the preview to crop, annotate, or share, or wait for it to close and save automatically.
Google’s documented wording is “Press the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time.” Button placement and animation vary by manufacturer, but the shortcut is standard on current Android phones.
If Power plus Volume Down does not work
- Press and hold the power button until the device menu appears.
- Tap Screenshot.
- If the command is missing, search the phone’s Settings app for “screenshot” or consult the manufacturer’s current button-help page.
Find and edit an Android screenshot
On phones using Google Photos, open Photos → Collections → On this device → Screenshots. Devices without Photos usually put captures in the Gallery app’s Screenshots folder. The preview normally provides crop, markup, and sharing controls.
Scrolling capture
Android 12 and newer commonly offer Capture more after a screenshot when the current screen exposes a scrollable surface. It can be useful for a long profile or text page, but Instagram may not offer the control for every view. Stories and Reels are time-based media, not documents: a scrolling capture will not preserve their motion or sound.

Does Instagram notify someone when you screenshot?

Android Authority summarizes the exception this way: “Instagram will only notify people when you take a screenshot of a disappearing photo or video in a direct message.” Other current explainers describe the same broad distinction: ordinary posts, Stories, Reels, profiles, and regular DMs usually do not produce an alert, while disappearing media and Vanish Mode may. Treat this as a description of current behavior, not a guarantee that applies to every future Instagram release.
How to capture a cleaner Instagram screenshot
- Open the exact item first. Navigate to the Story frame, post, Reel frame, profile section, or message before pressing the buttons.
- Pause video. Tap or hold the video according to the current Instagram interface so the frame is stable. A Story may pause when you hold a finger on the screen, although the gesture can vary by app version.
- Hide what you can. Dismiss stickers, reply fields, playback controls, and other transient overlays before capturing.
- Use the preview immediately. Crop navigation bars and notification banners while the thumbnail is available. Mark up or blur private information before sending the file.
- Check the saved file. Open Photos or Gallery and zoom in to verify that text is readable and that you captured the intended account and frame.
Saving your own Instagram Story
If the Story is yours, Instagram’s own save or download controls can preserve the original image or video more faithfully than a screenshot. A screenshot of a video is only one still image; it cannot retain motion or sound.
What screenshots do—and do not—preserve
- A screenshot records the pixels visible at one moment. It does not keep a Reel or Story’s animation, audio, links, polls, or tap-through behavior.
- Compression, scaling, and the phone’s display resolution can make small Instagram text less legible than the original upload.
- Notification banners, status icons, usernames, and direct-message details may become part of the image. Crop or redact them before sharing.
- Screen recording is not a silent workaround for temporary messages; Instagram may detect recording in the same situations in which it detects a screenshot.
Privacy, consent, and copyright
No notification does not mean that content is free to redistribute. Respect private accounts, disappearing messages, personal information, creator permissions, Instagram’s terms, and applicable copyright and privacy law. The technical behavior described above says when an alert may appear; it does not grant a universal right to copy, publish, or sell someone else’s work.

When the normal shortcut fails
The buttons open the power menu or do nothing
- Release both buttons quickly instead of holding them.
- Try the alternate method: on Android, hold Power and tap Screenshot; on iPhone, use the correct Home-button or Face ID combination for your model.
- Remove a thick case that prevents one button from registering and try again.
The screenshot is black, blank, or missing content
- Return to Instagram and wait for the image or video to finish loading.
- Pause the media before capture and verify that you are not looking at a transient loading frame.
- Some protected or temporary content can behave differently from an ordinary post; do not treat a blank capture as evidence that Instagram notified the sender.
The screenshot is not in Photos or Gallery
- On iPhone, use Photos → Collections → Media Types → Screenshots.
- On Android with Google Photos, use Photos → Collections → On this device → Screenshots; otherwise check Gallery’s Screenshots folder.
- Confirm that the phone has free storage and that Photos or Gallery has permission to access media.
The image includes private notifications
Crop the preview immediately, or edit the saved file before sharing. If a notification contains sensitive information, delete the unedited copy after verifying that the redacted version is the one you intend to keep.
