Use a public, signed-out help page whenever it answers your question. If you need a screenshot from a signed-in Indian e-Filing page, capture only the relevant area, mask sensitive fields before the image reaches an AI agent, and inspect the finished image yourself. A mask reduces what appears in the screenshot; it does not guarantee that every sensitive value is hidden or control what an external AI service retains.
Why Indian tax portal screenshots need care
The Income Tax Department’s My Profile manual lists information that may appear in a profile, including PAN, Aadhaar, contact details, address, bank and demat account details, representative information, and sources of income. Examples also include employer and business details, house-property addresses, co-owner information, and co-owners’ PAN or Aadhaar information. Treat signed-in profile pages and return-related screens as sensitive, even if the particular field you need to troubleshoot seems harmless. Read the My Profile manual.
The Department’s Login FAQs warn: “As a general precaution, please do not share your login credentials or other sensitive information.” Keep passwords, OTPs, recovery details, and login credentials out of screenshots supplied to an agent. See the Login FAQs.
The portal’s privacy policy describes information the Department may collect about visits, such as IP address, browser and operating-system type, visit date and time, and pages visited. It also says the Department does not sell or trade information collected through the portal and does not share it with third parties for marketing. That policy applies to the Department’s portal; it does not establish how a separate AI service handles an image you upload. Check the specific agent’s data handling and retention settings. Read the portal privacy policy.

Use the smallest, safest capture that solves the problem
- Start with public help content. Search the signed-out help pages first. If they explain the issue, there is no reason to expose a profile, dashboard, return, AIS, or account page to an agent.
- Navigate to the relevant area before capturing. Open the specific help article, error message, or non-sensitive interface section. Close unrelated tabs and dialogs. Avoid desktop-wide capture that might include browser notifications or another account page.
- Limit the capture area. Prefer a specific element or the visible viewport over a full-page image. A full-page capture can include information farther down the scrollable page that is not needed.
- Mask known sensitive fields before capture output is sent. Select stable page elements that reveal identity, contact, financial, or return information. Apply the mask in the screenshot operation rather than editing the image after an agent has already received it.
- Inspect the actual image. Check for names, PAN or Aadhaar, phone numbers, email addresses, bank details, return information, OTPs, URL parameters, notifications, and unrelated records. A selector-based mask only covers the elements you select; it may miss values in an unexpected layout, canvas, or browser chrome.
- Minimize storage and access. Save only if necessary, use a neutral filename, limit who can access it, and delete it when the task is complete under your organization’s policy.
These are practical precautions, not an official Income Tax Department workflow for AI agents. The Department’s documentation identifies the kinds of information its portal can contain; it does not certify that a particular third-party agent is safe for tax data.
Mask page content with Playwright before an agent receives it

The following Node.js example illustrates the sequence: navigate to a page, identify elements to obscure, take a viewport screenshot with those masks applied, then review the saved image locally before sharing it. Replace the example URL and selectors with the exact page and stable selectors you have verified. Do not put credentials or OTPs in source code, URLs, or screenshots.

})();The sample selectors are placeholders for selectors you must confirm on the page; they are not selectors guaranteed to exist on the Income Tax Department portal. If a selector matches nothing, the related value will not be masked. A locator mask changes the screenshot pixels, not the underlying page data, and does not guarantee privacy in agent logs, network paths, or later processing. Inspect the resulting file and use only an AI service and deployment whose handling settings you have checked.

When to use an element screenshot
If the error is contained in a stable element, capture that element rather than the page. For example, after locating the relevant error panel with a selector you have verified, use await page.locator('YOUR_VERIFIED_ERROR_SELECTOR').screenshot({ path: 'error.png', mask: masks });. Replace the selector text with the real selector; it is not runnable unchanged. This reduces incidental page content, but still requires checking the result.
When a full-page capture is justified
Use fullPage: true only when the diagnosis genuinely depends on content outside the viewport. Full-page capture expands the visible area and may expose additional profile or tax details, so mask and inspect the entire image rather than just the section where the error appeared.

How to send a useful support screenshot
The Income Tax Department’s helpdesk email-format document says to attach screenshots showing an error and lists taxpayer name, contact information, email, PAN, assessment or financial year, form, and problem details among information associated with a query. The document is dated January 2022; verify the current support channel and instructions before sending. An instruction to attach an error screenshot is not permission to expose every on-screen field. Crop to the error, remove unrelated identifiers, and preserve only enough context for diagnosis. See the helpdesk email-format document.
The Department also describes a co-browsing option. Its FAQ says the taxpayer must approve the request before an agent starts and can end the session; it distinguishes the active browser view from desktop screen sharing, which can reveal notifications. The FAQ says most co-browsing software has data masking for confidential information such as passwords. “Most” does not mean every tool masks every field. Ask what is masked and do not disclose secrets. This guidance describes a Department helpdesk session, not an arbitrary AI agent. Read the Co-Browser FAQs.

Troubleshooting a masked screenshot
- A sensitive value is still visible: stop before sharing. The locator may not match the field, the page layout may have changed, or the value may appear elsewhere. Verify the selector against the current page, add masks for each relevant location, retake the image, and inspect it again.
- The screenshot is blank or missing the error: confirm navigation reached the intended page and that the relevant content loaded before capture. Capture the specific error element or visible viewport; avoid widening the capture area unless the needed context is outside it.
- A mask covers the wrong area: recheck the matched locator and its bounding box on the current page. Do not send the image until the intended content is obscured and the diagnostic information remains readable.
- The issue appears only in browser chrome or a notification: page-level screenshots are not a substitute for safe desktop sharing. Close notifications and unrelated windows; do not include desktop chrome unless strictly necessary.
- You cannot establish how the agent handles uploads: do not send the screenshot to that service. Use public help content, an approved local or organizational workflow, or contact the Department through a verified current support channel.

What to check before an AI sees the image
- Is a signed-out public help page sufficient instead?
- Does the image contain only the minimum context needed to explain the issue?
- Were masks applied before the image was passed to the agent, and did you inspect the resulting pixels?
- Have you checked the specific agent’s transmission, retention, and access controls? Portal privacy statements do not answer those questions for a separate service.
- Can the issue be resolved using text copied without credentials or personal identifiers, rather than a screenshot?

Can an AI agent see my tax portal details?
If you send an image from a signed-in page to an agent, the image contains whatever is visible in it. Whether the service retains or further processes that image depends on that specific service and deployment; check its data-handling settings before uploading.
