Use Browserless to capture a rendered GST Portal page when you need a visual record of what appeared on screen, but save the portal’s own downloadable files wherever they are available. A screenshot can document a page state; it does not replace a structured portal export or establish that a record meets a particular tax or legal requirement.
Choose the right record before capturing
First identify the GST Portal page and tax period you need. Retain only the taxpayer information needed for your recordkeeping task. When the portal offers a native download, save it as the primary record and use a screenshot only for useful visual context.
For the GSTR-1 e-invoice workflow, the GST Portal instructions for creating an outward supplies return describe downloading e-invoice details in Excel and a PDF summary. The GSTR-1 user guide also describes download history and files saved locally. These instructions relate to specified GSTR-1 workflows; they do not mean every GST Portal page has the same exports.

Capture a GST Portal page with Browserless
Browserless documents a REST Screenshot API at its Screenshot API documentation. Send a POST request to /screenshot with a URL and screenshot options; the response is an image such as PNG, JPEG, or WebP. The API token is a credential. Keep it out of published examples, shared logs, and shell history where possible.
Basic request
Replace the example URL with the page you are authorized to capture and replace YOUR_BROWSERLESS_TOKEN with your token. The exact request body/options should follow Browserless’s current API documentation for your account and desired output format.

Target a long page or a rendered element
Use the documented full-page option when the record spans beyond the visible viewport. Browserless also documents selector-based capture and wait settings, which can help capture a particular rendered element or allow content to appear before the screenshot. Consult the Screenshot API reference for supported option names and formats rather than assuming settings from another browser tool will behave identically.

Handle pages that require login
Browserless documents persistent browser sessions that retain cookies and navigation history, and authenticated profiles that preload saved browser state before rendering. See Authenticated Profiles and browser sessions. Those are Browserless capabilities, not proof that a particular GST Portal account or verification flow will work with them. Test the exact flow cautiously and use only an account and data you are authorized to access.
Check the returned file
Open the image and verify that it shows the expected portal page, period, and relevant details. Browserless notes that blank images, CAPTCHA pages, and access-denied content can indicate automation blocking. Do not treat a successful HTTP response or an image file as proof that the intended page was captured.

Save and verify the record
- Download the portal-provided export first, if the relevant page offers one. For the documented GSTR-1 workflow, consult the official guide for the applicable Excel detail and PDF summary options.
- Capture the specific page state with Browserless only when a visual record adds context.
- Inspect both the screenshot and the native export, if present, for the correct period and complete content.
- Save related files together with descriptive names, such as
GSTR1_2026-09_einvoice-export.xlsxandGSTR1_2026-09_page-screenshot_2026-10-03.png. This is a file-organization suggestion, not a statutory naming rule. - Restrict access to taxpayer information and protect the Browserless token as a secret.
The reviewed official guides address particular GSTR-1 tasks; they do not establish a universal retention period for screenshots or all GST records. Confirm the requirements for your record type and circumstances with an authoritative GST source or a qualified adviser.
Use a PDF when searchable text matters
Browserless says its PDF endpoint uses Chrome’s print engine and produces selectable text rather than a screenshot. See the PDF API documentation. A PDF may be more useful than an image when you need to search or copy rendered text, but Browserless does not say that its PDF is an official GST Portal export or legally sufficient for any particular recordkeeping obligation.

Troubleshoot common capture failures
- The image is blank: The page may not have rendered, or the site may be blocking automation. Check the captured file, review Browserless’s documented options for waiting, and test whether the page is available in a normal browser.
- The image shows a CAPTCHA or access denied: Treat it as a failed capture, not a record of the intended portal content. Do not attempt to bypass a portal’s access controls; use the portal normally or obtain the appropriate official export.
- Content is missing or the page is cut off: Check whether the page needs more rendering time or a full-page capture. For a specific element, verify the selector against the rendered page and use the selector option documented by Browserless.
- The capture is logged out: The remote browser may not have the required authenticated state. Browserless sessions and authenticated profiles can preserve or preload state, but compatibility with a specific GST Portal login is not established. Verify the permitted workflow and inspect the result before relying on it.
- The saved file is not the format you expected: Confirm the endpoint options and output format in the current Browserless reference, then inspect the actual response rather than relying on the filename extension alone.
