Ads and widgets can load or resize after navigation, so first decide whether your capture should show them, then wait for the intended page state and capture either the full page or the article element.
Why an Indian news page can shift after navigation
Playwright’s load event is not proof that a page has finished changing. A site can fetch content lazily and populate or resize parts of its interface afterward. Images or videos without reserved dimensions, font changes, and inserted or resized third-party ads and widgets can all move page content.
This applies to news pages generally; the exact ad slots, selectors, loading behavior, and consent flow depend on the publisher and article. The steps below do not assume a particular Indian news site has been tested.
Choose the page state you want to capture
Before writing a wait, decide what the image is meant to represent. An archival screenshot should preserve the visible page, including ads if they are part of that state. A layout test may need to exclude volatile ad content so it can compare the editorial layout. Masking or hiding content changes the image, so use it only when that matches the purpose of the capture.

- Keep ads: wait for the relevant ad slots or observe the layout until it reaches the intended state, then capture. A delay can give asynchronous content time to appear, but cannot guarantee that a third-party ad has settled.
- Exclude ads: use a documented screenshot mask or style to cover or hide known regions, only if removing them is appropriate to the result you need. Avoid assuming one selector will work across publishers or articles.
- Capture the article only: take a locator screenshot of the article element rather than capturing every page region.
Capture the article with Playwright
The example below uses Playwright with JavaScript. Replace the URL and the article locator with values for the page you are capturing. The locator is intentionally a placeholder to be identified on the selected publisher’s page; there is no universal article selector for Indian news sites.
- Install Playwright: in a new project, run
npm init -y, thennpm install playwrightandnpx playwright install chromium. - Save this as
screenshot.mjs: it waits for the article locator to be present and visible, then saves a full-page PNG. Replacearticleif the site uses a different selector. - Run it: execute

}domcontentloaded gets navigation underway without treating network quiet as proof of readiness. The article visibility check is the meaningful readiness assertion in this example. If the page needs a different condition—for example, a headline or a known ad slot—wait for that condition instead. Playwright explicitly discourages networkidle as a testing readiness condition and recommends web assertions instead; it defines that state as no network connections for at least 500 ms, which does not establish that a dynamic page has reached the visual state you want. Full page, article element, or clipped region
- Full page:

await page.locator('article').screenshot({ path: 'article-only.png' }). This captures that element rather than the entire document. - Visible viewport: omit
fullPageto capture only what is currently in view.
Use the selector that matches the actual page, not necessarily the literal article element. Playwright’s screenshot API documents full-page and element screenshots.

Make repeated screenshots less sensitive to ad changes
For visual regression tests, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot assertion instead of saving a one-off image. It waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing them. That helps catch ongoing animation or movement during capture, but it does not make third-party ads deliver identical content across separate sessions.

A mask stabilizes the comparison by covering a region; it does not capture that region’s true visual content. A screenshot style can be used to apply capture-specific CSS where appropriate. Consult the Playwright visual comparisons documentation for the installed version’s options.
Keep visual comparisons reproducible
For meaningful baseline comparisons, keep the browser and rendering environment consistent. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode.

- Use the same Playwright/browser version, operating system, viewport, and device scale factor for baseline and later captures.
- Keep locale and other rendering settings consistent when they affect text, dates, or page content.
- Choose screenshot scale deliberately. The screenshot API’s
scale: 'css'option produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; the default device scale can create larger images on high-DPI displays.
These settings improve comparability, but do not make independently served ad content identical. See the Playwright Page API for screenshot scale and capture options.
Troubleshoot common failures
The screenshot is taken before the article appears
Cause: navigation completed, but the page populates article content later. Fix: wait for the headline or a visible article locator, and use a selector appropriate to that page. Do not substitute a general network-quiet wait for the content condition you need.
The page still shifts after the article is visible
Cause: an ad, image, font, consent notice, or widget loads or resizes later. Fix: if that content belongs in the image, wait for a relevant slot or other observable state and capture after the layout reaches the intended state. A fixed delay is only a best-effort pause. If the capture is a layout test and volatile content is out of scope, mask or style it deliberately.

The full-page image is too tall or hard to use
Cause: fullPage: true includes the full scrollable document, including content beyond the article. Fix: capture the article locator or a specific region, or use a viewport screenshot when only the visible screen matters.
Visual tests fail even though the editorial layout looks unchanged
Cause: dynamic third-party content or differences in the machine and browser environment alter pixels. Fix: make the rendering environment consistent, disable animations where appropriate, and mask only regions excluded from the test’s purpose. Screenshot matching cannot ensure identical ads across sessions.
The article selector times out
Cause: the chosen selector does not match this publisher’s markup, or the article never became visible. Fix: inspect the page’s current DOM and choose a selector for the actual headline or article container. Do not reuse a selector as though it were universal across news websites.

Automation, performance, and cost considerations
Browser startup and page loading are part of the capture time; third-party activity can make completion unpredictable. Waiting only for the content condition you need avoids treating unrelated network traffic as a readiness signal, while an explicit timeout prevents a run from waiting forever. Full-page captures may create much larger image files than an article-only capture. For repeated automation, check the chosen publisher’s current terms and robots policy; this guide does not establish the policy of any specific site.
