In Chrome on a Mac, open the page, press Command-Option-I for DevTools, press Command-Shift-P for the Command Menu, type screenshot, and choose Capture full size screenshot. Chrome saves an image of the complete rendered page, including content below the visible viewport.
Capture a full scrolling page in Chrome (the built-in method)
This workflow uses Chrome’s own DevTools, so no extension or separate application is required. It is the best choice for a one-off capture when you are already viewing the page.
- Open the target page. Wait until the visible content has loaded. If the page adds content as you scroll, give it time to finish loading before capturing.
- Open DevTools. Press Command-Option-I. DevTools normally appears docked to the right or bottom of the browser window.
- Open the Command Menu. Press Command-Shift-P while DevTools is focused.
- Search for the capture command. Type screenshot.
- Choose “Capture full size screenshot.” Do not choose the similarly named viewport or area commands. Full size captures the whole rendered page, including content that is not currently visible in the viewport.
- Find the file. Chrome downloads the resulting image using your normal download location and format settings.
The Command Menu also offers a normal viewport screenshot and an area screenshot. A viewport shot contains only what is visible in the browser window; an area shot contains a rectangle you select. For a page that scrolls, Capture full size screenshot is the relevant command.
What “full size” includes—and what it does not
Content below the fold
Chrome renders the page at its current layout and captures the page’s full rendered height. Text, images, and sections that are below the fold are included even though you cannot see them at once.

Lazy-loaded and interactive content
A capture reflects what the page has rendered at the moment you run the command. Scroll through a page first if images or sections appear only after scrolling. Expand accordions, dismiss overlays, or select the required tab before opening the Command Menu; DevTools does not infer which interactive state you want.
Fixed headers and animation
Fixed-position elements can appear in the captured layout according to the site’s rendering behavior, and an animation may be caught mid-frame. Pause video or animated content when a stable record is important. If a cookie notice, chat bubble, or newsletter panel covers the page, close it before capture.
Save a full-page Chrome screenshot as a PDF
DevTools’ full-size command produces an image. For a PDF, use Chrome’s headless command-line mode. Run these commands from Terminal, replacing the URL with the page you need:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://developer.chrome.com/--screenshot writes an image, while --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT sets the viewport used to lay out the page. Change 412,892 to the desktop or mobile dimensions you need. A larger viewport can change responsive navigation, column count, and text wrapping, so use the dimensions that match your documentation or test case.

PDF without browser decorations
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://developer.chrome.com/--print-to-pdf creates a PDF. Adding --no-pdf-header-footer removes Chrome’s date, URL, and page-number decorations. Without that switch, those headers and footers may be included in the generated document.
Allow time for a slow page
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,1200 --timeout=10000 https://developer.chrome.com/--timeout=MILLISECONDS tells headless Chrome how long to wait before capturing. Increase the value for pages that load data or images slowly. A timeout is not a guarantee that every asynchronous request has completed; it simply delays the capture by the specified period.

Make the capture reliable
Prepare the page
- Confirm the address and login state before capturing private or account-only content.
- Wait for the main content, fonts, and images to finish loading.
- Scroll through long pages when you know images are lazy-loaded.
- Close cookie dialogs, newsletter prompts, chat widgets, and other overlays that obscure the page.
- Set the browser zoom and window width deliberately; responsive breakpoints affect the final layout.
Keep a reproducible record
For a manual capture, record the URL, date, browser version, window width, and any actions taken (for example, expanding a section). For a recurring process, use the headless command and keep the exact command in a script. Consistent viewport and timeout values make later captures easier to compare.

Protect sensitive information
A full-page image can include data far below the fold, including account details, email addresses, or internal links. Review the complete image before sending it. Redact sensitive areas with an image editor rather than assuming that content outside the initial viewport was not captured.
Troubleshooting full-page captures
“Capture full size screenshot” is missing
Make sure DevTools is open and that the Command Menu was opened with Command-Shift-P. Search for screenshot rather than browsing unrelated commands. If the page is in a restricted embedded frame, open the page itself in a tab and try again.
The result contains only the visible window
You probably selected a viewport screenshot. Reopen the Command Menu and select Capture full size screenshot, not “Capture screenshot” or “Capture area screenshot.”
Images or sections are blank
The site may lazy-load them only after scrolling, or the network request may still be in progress. Scroll through the page, wait for the assets to appear, and capture again. A blocked resource, authentication requirement, or script error can also prevent the browser from rendering the content; check the page normally before blaming the screenshot command.

The page is cut off or extremely tall
Check for an internal scrolling container. Some applications keep the document short and place the real content inside a panel with its own scrollbar; a document-level full-size capture may not include everything inside that panel. Use the application’s export function, capture the panel separately, or use an automation workflow that targets the element.
The PDF has a date, URL, or page numbers
Run the headless command with --no-pdf-header-footer. This switch removes those generated decorations; it does not remove headers and footers that are part of the webpage’s own design.
The headless command is not recognized
Your shell cannot find the Chrome executable under the name chrome. Use the Chrome executable’s installed path for your macOS setup, or run the command from an environment where Chrome’s command-line binary is available. The switches remain the same.
Headless output differs from the normal browser
Compare viewport dimensions, authentication, zoom, and wait time. Responsive CSS can select a different layout at another width, and a page that depends on a logged-in profile may not render the same way in a clean headless session.
