To capture a webpage automatically when a Google Sheets row is added, connect a Google Sheets “New Spreadsheet Row” trigger to a screenshot action, then decide where the resulting image should go. Zapier documents a no-code route using HTML to Image’s “Convert URL to Image” action. For more control, an Apps Script can react to the appropriate spreadsheet event, call a screenshot API, and insert or save the returned image—but the trigger must match how the row is created.
No-code setup: Zapier and HTML to Image
This is the quickest documented route if your sheet receives rows at the bottom and the screenshot action meets your needs. The row must include a webpage URL that can be mapped into the image action.
- Prepare the sheet. Add a column for the webpage URL, and keep the spreadsheet and worksheet structure stable.
- Set the trigger. In Zapier, choose Google Sheets’ New Spreadsheet Row trigger, then select the spreadsheet and worksheet. The integration describes this trigger as firing when a row is added at the bottom of the spreadsheet.
- Add the capture action. Choose HTML to Image’s Convert URL to Image action and map the row’s URL field to the action’s webpage URL field.
- Configure the image. The action lists options for full-page capture, wait time, and image quality. Set these according to the page and output you need.
- Choose the destination. Decide whether to save the generated image URL in a column, insert an image into the sheet, or send the result elsewhere. Confirm that your configured actions support that destination: the integration description establishes the capture step, not automatic write-back into the same row.
- Test with a real new row. Add a row using the same method you expect to use in production, then confirm the trigger fires, the correct URL is captured, and the image reaches the intended destination.
Zapier’s integration page says its Free plan polls for new data every 15 minutes. That is a plan-specific detail that can change; check the current plan behavior if capture timing matters.
Custom setup: Apps Script and a screenshot API
Apps Script is a better fit when you need custom handling of the input, image, or output. It does not itself capture webpages: your script needs to call a screenshot service with an interface Apps Script can use, then process the returned image or URL.

Choose the event that matches how a row arrives
Google documents simple triggers such as onOpen() and onEdit(), as well as installable spreadsheet triggers for open, edit, change, form-submit, and time-driven events. Choose based on the actual source:
- A person edits cells: an edit trigger may fit.
- A Google Form submits a response: consider a form-submit trigger.
- The sheet structure changes: consider a change trigger.
- An external integration adds rows: test that exact integration rather than assuming an edit trigger will run for every inserted row.
Simple triggers have restrictions, and Google documents that onEdit() queues up to two trigger events. For a busy sheet, select and test the trigger carefully. Confirm successful runs in the Apps Script execution log and verify the resulting output.

- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
Insert the captured image
After your script obtains image data or a publicly accessible image URL, the Sheets Sheet class provides methods to insert an image from a BlobSource or from a public image URL. Google’s documentation states that an image inserted from a BlobSource is limited to 2 MB. Check the image size and output method before relying on this route.
The key implementation steps are therefore: identify the row and URL, call a compatible screenshot API, and place its returned image or URL in the intended destination. The Google documentation covers triggers and image insertion, but does not specify a screenshot provider or supply a complete capture integration; the API call depends on the service you choose.

Choosing the right workflow
| Consideration | No-code route | Apps Script route |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Configure the Google Sheets trigger and image action in Zapier. | Write and authorize a script, select a suitable trigger, and connect a screenshot API. |
| Timing | Zapier’s cited integration page says Free-plan polling checks every 15 minutes; confirm current plan behavior. | Depends on the selected trigger and implementation; test the actual row-entry method. |
| Capture controls | The listed action options include full-page capture, wait time, and image quality. | Depends on the screenshot API and the code you implement. |
| Output and upkeep | Verify that your configured actions deliver the image to the required destination; same-row write-back is not established by the integration description. | You control how the result is handled, but must maintain the script and API integration if the sheet or service changes. |

Use ScreenshotNeo to capture a URL with one API request; it can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Add the request to your Apps Script workflow and then handle the returned result for your chosen sheet destination. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example URL with the webpage URL from your row. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting
- The no-code trigger misses a row. Confirm that the row is added at the bottom, that the selected spreadsheet and worksheet are correct, and that the live workflow uses the same entry method you tested.
- The screenshot action receives no URL. Check that the row’s URL column is populated and that the correct field is mapped to the action’s webpage URL input.
- The image is created but not in the row. Capture and write-back are separate tasks. Configure a destination step that supports the output, or implement the insertion in Apps Script; do not assume the capture action inserts into the source row.
- An Apps Script trigger does not run for externally added data. Reproduce the external process during testing, choose an event suitable for that input, and check execution history. Trigger behavior depends on how the row is created.
- The Apps Script insertion fails for a large image. If inserting from a
BlobSource, check the documented 2 MB limit; use a suitable image size or a publicly accessible URL insertion method instead. - Captures arrive later than expected. Check the automation’s current polling schedule and plan details. The 15-minute interval cited above is specific to Zapier’s Free plan documentation and may change.
