To screenshot an internal webpage, run the browser that captures it somewhere that can resolve and connect to the page—usually a worker inside the same private network, VPC, or an approved connected segment. A public screenshot API cannot reach an intranet hostname, localhost, or private IP just because you pass that address in a URL. Use a hosted API only if its provider documents a supported private-network connection.
Why a public screenshot API usually cannot capture an internal page
A screenshot API renders a page from the network where its browser runs. If that browser cannot resolve your internal hostname or route to its private IP, it cannot load the page. Supplying an internal URL does not extend your network to the vendor.
This applies to intranet pages and development addresses such as localhost: localhost means the machine making the request, so a hosted renderer’s localhost is not your computer’s. The reviewed documentation does not establish a managed screenshot provider with a customer-side agent or other explicit private-network connection. Before choosing one, verify its network model, authentication support, data retention, and deployment model directly with the provider.
Choose where the browser will run

These are operational trade-offs, not benchmark results: comparable latency, throughput, and cost figures are not established here. Build a controlled Playwright capture service
Place a worker where it can reach the target application, then expose a narrow internal endpoint that accepts authorized capture requests. The example below uses Node.js and Playwright to navigate to a URL and return a full-page PNG. Install Playwright and its browser in the worker image, then adapt the endpoint framework and authorization to your environment.

Adapt the capture to the page
- For a viewport-only image, use
page.screenshot({ type: 'png' })instead offullPage: true. - For a specific element, locate it and call its screenshot method, for example
await page.locator('.report').screenshot({ type: 'png' }). - If the application has a reliable readiness condition, wait for that condition before capturing rather than assuming navigation completion means the page is ready.
- Check the final document response and, where useful, the expected page title or content. A login screen or application error page can still render as a valid image.
Secure the browser as an in-network service
An in-network browser can make requests from its network position. Treat arbitrary URL capture as a security-sensitive capability, not a harmless image endpoint.
- Allow only approved schemes, hosts, and—where practical—paths. Revalidate redirects against the same policy.
- Restrict worker egress at the network layer to the destinations it needs. Deny access to link-local and metadata endpoints, and isolate the worker from sensitive control-plane services.
- Set navigation timeouts and limits for request size, page size, and concurrency. Authenticate callers and record enough metadata to investigate misuse without logging credentials.
- Keep API keys and target-site credentials out of URLs and logs. The screenshot API documentation warns that query-string keys can leak through page source or server logs; it documents bearer authentication: Zyte API HTTP usage.
- Use narrowly scoped, short-lived target credentials when authentication is needed. Playwright storage state can contain cookies and headers that impersonate a user; protect it as a secret and exclude it from source control: Playwright authentication.
The URL checks in the example are illustrative. Host allowlisting alone is not a complete defense against DNS changes, redirects, or other network-level risks; enforce the policy at both the application and network layers.

Keep captures reliable and reproducible
A successful screenshot response does not guarantee that the intended page loaded. The target may return a login or error page that the browser can capture. Record the final response status and capture metadata, and check the expected title, content, or application-specific readiness condition.
Pin the Playwright package, matching browser binaries, and container or operating-system image. Playwright documents that browser binaries are version-specific, and visual output may vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Troubleshoot common capture failures

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a hosted screenshot API capture localhost?
Not your computer’s localhost. In a hosted renderer, localhost refers to the renderer’s own machine. Use a browser running on a machine that can reach your local or private application.
Can I capture a private page through a VPN?
Only if the machine running the browser is connected to the VPN and its DNS and routes allow access to the page. A hosted renderer does not inherit your VPN connection automatically.
