Use fullPage: true for a full-page image; without it, Puppeteer captures only the viewport. The selectors below are examples and must be replaced with ones that match your site.
Capture a page after a normal website login
This example uses Puppeteer’s locator API to fill a login form and wait for the authenticated page before navigating to a report. Replace the URLs and selectors with the site’s actual form fields and a reliable success condition, such as a dashboard element. Store credentials in environment variables rather than writing them into the script.

Adapt the login-success wait to the site
Do not treat a successful click as proof that login worked. Use an element, URL, or target-page condition that only appears after successful authentication. Some sites submit with a full document navigation; others update the page through client-side code. For a client-side login, omit the navigation wait and instead wait for the authenticated UI or URL condition. If the target page itself is the best confirmation, navigate there and wait for its content before capturing.

Handle navigation without a race
When a click causes document navigation, start waiting before clicking. The Promise.all() pattern in the example registers waitForNavigation() first, avoiding the race in which navigation begins before the wait is installed. Puppeteer documents this ordering in its request-interception guide.
Choose the right authentication flow
HTML login form
Most website sign-ins use ordinary HTML fields, buttons, redirects, and sometimes additional verification. Automate the form with locators and wait for the site’s actual post-login signal. The generic example cannot supply the correct selectors, redirect behavior, or MFA steps for an unnamed website.

HTTP authentication
page.authenticate({ username, password }) is for a server’s HTTP authentication challenge, not for filling a website’s username and password fields. Puppeteer says the method enables request interception behind the scenes, which may affect performance. See Page.authenticate().
Cookies and browser context
Keep navigation and capture in the same browser context so the relevant session state remains available. A Puppeteer BrowserContext isolates cookies and local storage from other contexts; do not assume cookies alone represent every application’s authentication state. Puppeteer provides browser- and context-level cookie methods for reading, setting, and deleting cookies. See BrowserContext and Cookies.

Wait until the captured content is ready
Prefer a meaningful application condition: first a post-login dashboard or account element, then a selector for the target content. page.waitForNetworkIdle() can help when network activity settling is relevant, but it does not prove that the specific content you need has rendered. It resolves after network activity is idle and waits at least the configured idle time. See Page.waitForNetworkIdle().
Avoid enabling request interception unless the workflow needs it. Once interception is enabled, each intercepted request stalls until the handler continues it, responds to it, or aborts it, or the request completes through browser cache. Ensure every relevant request is resolved by the handler. Details are in Puppeteer’s Request Interception guide.

For example, save a full-page PNG with await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });. Screenshot options also include type, quality, clip, and omitBackground; choose them for the needed output format, region, or background. See ScreenshotOptions.
Troubleshoot failed or incomplete captures
- The screenshot shows the login page: The login may have failed, the success condition may be too weak, or the target route may require additional site-specific steps. Wait for a reliable authenticated element or URL before continuing.
- The script hangs at navigation: The submit action may update the page without a document navigation. Remove
waitForNavigation()in that case and wait for an authenticated UI condition instead. - The screenshot is blank or missing the report: Wait for a selector tied to the actual report content, not just network idle or a generic page load.
- Requests stall after enabling interception: Check that every intercepted request is continued, answered, or aborted by the handler.
- HTTP credentials do not fill the site’s form: Use locators to interact with the ordinary form;
page.authenticate()handles HTTP authentication challenges.
