For a repeatable, full-page 2× screenshot on a Mac, use Playwright: keep the browser viewport at the CSS dimensions you want, set deviceScaleFactor: 2, and capture with scale: 'device' and fullPage: true. For example, a 1280-CSS-pixel-wide layout produces an image 2560 pixels wide. Safari can preview pages at a chosen pixel ratio, but the Apple documentation reviewed does not describe a direct Safari export for a complete 2× PNG.
What “2× Retina” means in a saved screenshot
A webpage is laid out in CSS pixels; a screenshot file has physical image pixels. At 2×, each CSS pixel in the layout maps to two output pixels horizontally and two vertically. A 1280-pixel CSS viewport therefore corresponds to 2560 image pixels across. The CSS viewport controls the responsive layout; the output scale controls image detail. Changing the latter need not change the former.
Apple’s archived image-delivery guidance describes 1× as standard resolution and 2× as high resolution: “In the -webkit-image-set function, 1x correlates to standard-resolution and 2x correlates to high-resolution.” Its description of four device pixels inside each CSS pixel at 2× refers to a 2-by-2 area, not a fourfold increase in each dimension (Apple’s archived Safari image guidance).
Capture a full-page 2× screenshot with Playwright
Playwright provides explicit controls for the viewport, device pixel ratio, screenshot scale, and full-page capture. Install Node.js, then in a new project directory run:

})();Run it with node screenshot.js. The resulting page-2x.png captures the document’s scrollable height rather than only the initial viewport. The 1280-pixel width is a CSS-pixel width; with device scale 2, expect 2560 output pixels across, subject to site-specific rendering or later image processing. Playwright documents scale: 'device' as one output pixel per device pixel and scale: 'css' as one output pixel per CSS pixel. Its fullPage option captures the full scrollable page (Playwright screenshot documentation).

Adjust the capture without changing the method
- Choose the responsive layout: set
viewport.widthandviewport.heightin CSS pixels. Pick the width that matches the desktop, tablet, or mobile layout you intend to capture. - Capture only the visible viewport: omit
fullPage: true. - Save one output pixel per CSS pixel: use
scale: 'css'instead ofscale: 'device'. - Capture the full page at 2×: retain both
fullPage: trueandscale: 'device', withdeviceScaleFactor: 2in the browser context.
These are documented-API settings, not a guarantee that every site renders identically. Pages that keep network requests active may not reach networkidle; select a navigation wait condition suited to that page rather than assuming all sites become idle.
Use Safari for responsive preview, not guaranteed full-page export
Safari’s Responsive Design Mode is useful when you want to inspect how a page adapts to a viewport and pixel ratio. Open it from Safari’s Develop menu with Enter Responsive Design Mode, or use Control-Command-R. Apple documents selecting the pixel ratio for rendering and notes that it can affect images and styles (Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation).

The Apple documentation cited here describes responsive preview, not a direct command to export an entire webpage as a 2× PNG. If you need a saved file with explicit device-pixel scaling and full-page capture, use the Playwright workflow above.

Troubleshooting 2× captures
- The image is still the CSS-pixel width: check that the context has
deviceScaleFactor: 2and the screenshot usesscale: 'device'.scale: 'css'intentionally outputs one pixel per CSS pixel. - The layout changed when you increased the image size: set the desired CSS viewport explicitly. Device pixel ratio determines pixel density; viewport width determines responsive layout.
- The screenshot stops at the visible area: ensure
fullPage: trueis present. Without it, Playwright captures the viewport. - Navigation hangs or times out: a page may continue making network requests and fail to reach
networkidle. Use a wait condition appropriate to the page and, if needed, wait for a specific element or a controlled delay before capture. - Some page content is missing or differs: rendering can depend on site behavior, loading state, and screenshot processing. Confirm that the content has appeared before capture; no single wait condition guarantees every site is ready.
- Safari preview looks 2×, but the saved image is not: preview pixel ratio and saved-file dimensions are separate concerns. Use Playwright’s explicit output scale when the file’s pixel dimensions matter.
