Pause the carousel, avoid scrolling the page, wait for its current image to load, and capture either the visible viewport or the carousel element. A full-page screenshot is not a reliable way to trigger every offscreen lazy-loaded image, and Playwright’s CSS animation controls do not necessarily stop a JavaScript autoplay timer.
Why carousel images can be missing
Lazy loading postpones fetching or displaying an image until the browser considers it close enough to the viewport, or until JavaScript detects that it intersects a viewing area. A carousel’s hidden or offscreen slides may therefore remain unloaded even when their image elements are present in the page markup. See Chrome’s guidance on browser-level image lazy loading, MDN’s Intersection Observer documentation, and Google Search Central’s lazy-loading guidance.
Full-page capture and ordinary scrolling are different operations. Playwright’s full-page screenshot captures the page’s scrollable extent, but it does not guarantee that the browser has scrolled through the page in a way that triggers every scroll- or intersection-dependent load. A Playwright GitHub issue discusses this limitation; it is a feature discussion, not documentation of a supported scrolling option.

Capture the current slide with Playwright
- Open the page and identify the currently visible slide and the carousel’s pause control, if it is autoplaying.
- Pause autoplay using the site’s control or the carousel library’s documented API. The selector and API method depend on the site; there is no universal Playwright command that pauses every carousel.
- Avoid scrolling the document when the current state matters. If the image is absent, use the carousel’s normal controls to expose the intended image so it can load, return to the desired slide, and pause autoplay again.
- Wait until the target image has loaded and, where relevant, decoded. A request starting does not prove that the image has been painted.
- Capture the viewport or the carousel element. Use full-page capture only if the whole document is needed, then verify offscreen content separately.
- If CSS motion affects consistency, use Playwright’s screenshot-time style or animation option, and confirm the intended slide is still displayed.
Example using Playwright’s JavaScript API. Replace the URL and locator with those for your page. The pause selector is deliberately site-specific; inspect the page and substitute its actual accessible pause button. The image selector should target the image for the visible slide.

For a viewport capture instead, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });. Playwright supports screenshot-time CSS, clipping, full-page capture, and the animations option. Disabling animations fast-forwards finite animations and cancels infinite ones, but it should not be treated as a general mechanism for stopping JavaScript timers that advance a carousel. Troubleshooting
- The screenshot shows a blank image: Confirm the target image is visible, then wait for its load and decode before capturing. If it is lazy-loaded, expose it through the carousel’s normal controls rather than assuming markup presence means it is ready.
- The slide changes during capture: Pause autoplay using the page’s own control or its carousel library API. Screenshot-time CSS animation suppression does not reliably stop JavaScript-driven timers.
- The carousel image loads only after scrolling: Full-page capture may not trigger the same intersection events as ordinary scrolling. If preserving the current slide is essential, avoid scrolling and load only the needed slide; if the entire page is the priority, scroll through it and accept that page behavior may change the carousel.
- Animation suppression changes the output unexpectedly: Playwright may fast-forward finite animations or cancel infinite CSS/Web Animations. Remove the
animationsoption or screenshot stylesheet and rely on the carousel’s pause mechanism instead. - The pause button selector does not match: Inspect the page’s accessible button name and markup, then update the locator. Some carousels have no pause control; in that case use their documented API if available. The right method depends on the site implementation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does `fullPage: true` scroll through the page to load lazy images?
No. It captures the scrollable document, but does not guarantee that scroll-triggered loading has run.

Will Playwright’s `animations: ‘disabled’` stop a carousel?
It affects CSS animations and Web Animations as documented, but does not generally stop a carousel advanced by a JavaScript timer.
