Scroll through the page before taking a full-page screenshot. That gives images and sections triggered by visibility a chance to load; a full-page capture alone may not activate them. In Playwright, scroll the page, wait for the content you need, then capture with fullPage: true. Check the result: virtualized lists and nested scroll panels may need a different approach.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss visible-only content
A full-page screenshot captures the document’s scrollable extent; it does not necessarily scroll the page as a person would. Playwright describes the result as a very tall screen that fits the page. Content that loads only when it enters the viewport—such as lazy images, iframes, or sections activated by an IntersectionObserver—may therefore remain unloaded if the viewport never reaches it. Scroll-reveal effects and virtualized lists can also depend on actual scrolling. Playwright’s screenshot documentation explains full-page capture, while a 2026 Playwright feature-request issue discusses scroll-triggered content. The issue proposes an option; it is not evidence that such an option is part of Playwright.
Scroll first, then capture the full page
- Navigate and wait for an appropriate starting state. For example, use
domcontentloadedto wait for the initial document parse. Choose readiness based on the page and task rather than assuming one navigation event means all content is ready. - Scroll through the content. Bring each relevant area into view. Allow the site’s own loading and rendering to occur; use smaller increments or repeat passes if reaching the bottom reveals more content.
- Wait for a meaningful condition when possible. If you know the last expected item or section, wait for it to appear or become visible. A fixed delay is only a fallback, not proof that every page has finished loading. Playwright’s guidance advises against using
networkidleas a general test-readiness signal; prefer assertions tied to the content you need. See the Playwright Page API. - Capture the full page. In JavaScript, use
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });. In Python, useawait page.screenshot(path="page.png", full_page=True). - Inspect the output. Check below the fold for expected images, sections, and items. A successful screenshot call does not establish that all scroll-triggered content appeared.
JavaScript example
This starting pattern scrolls to the current bottom, waits briefly, and repeats while the document height changes, with a cap to avoid an unbounded loop on an endless feed. Replace the delay with a page-specific condition when possible. The pattern is illustrative, not a universal loader; adjust it for the target page.

A page can load content without changing its height, add content after the last pass, or keep extending indefinitely. For reliability, combine scrolling with a known completion condition and inspect the saved image.

After scrolling through the page and waiting for the content you need, Playwright’s Python full-page capture call is:

Choose the capture method for the page structure

Troubleshoot missing content
- Images below the fold are blank: Confirm that scrolling brought them into view and wait for the page’s image or content condition before capture. Inspect whether they appear after a second scroll pass.
- Sections appear only after scrolling: Ensure the page actually scrolled through those sections;
fullPage: truealone is not a scroll simulation. - Rows disappear or are missing in a long list: Check whether the page virtualizes its list. Capture sequential viewport segments rather than relying on one tall image.
- An inner panel remains unchanged: Determine whether the document or a nested element owns the scroll position. Scroll the correct container; a document-level scroll pass will not necessarily trigger panel content.
- The screenshot is inconsistent between runs: Replace arbitrary waits with an explicit condition for a known element or final item. Generic network-idle status or a delay does not prove that the particular content is ready.
- The page keeps growing: Set a meaningful bound before scrolling. The example’s pass cap prevents endless looping, but the correct bound depends on what you need to capture.
Performance, reliability, and page state
A scroll pass adds navigation work and waiting before the screenshot, and its duration depends on the page’s own loading behavior. There is no universal scroll distance or delay that guarantees completion. Smaller scroll steps can help with pages whose triggers are narrow or whose content appears incrementally, but wait for observable page-specific evidence rather than assuming a timing value works everywhere.
Scrolling can also change visual state: animations may play, sticky elements may move, and scroll-triggered effects may remain active. If the goal is to preserve an initial state, record what state matters and compare it after scrolling. The Playwright feature-request discussion notes that automatic scrolling can alter page state, one reason its proposed behavior was opt-in.
