To capture a page behind a login, the screenshot renderer must receive valid authentication state before it requests the protected URL. If the site accepts a session cookie or authentication header, use a screenshot API that documents that input; if login requires browser interaction or additional browser storage, authenticate with Playwright and reuse its saved state. In either case, check the final image and response status: a returned screenshot can still show a login or error page.
Before you start: confirm access and identify the login method
Only capture an account and page you are authorized to access. A URL does not grant access on its own: the renderer needs the same kind of authentication state the site expects from a browser or HTTP client.
Identify whether the site relies on cookies, request headers or tokens, HTTP basic authentication, or an interactive browser login. A cookie-based API call is useful only if the cookie is valid for the target host and the site accepts it for the requested page. If authentication depends on redirects, local storage, session storage, or a multi-step challenge, a browser workflow may be necessary.
Use a screenshot API when the site accepts cookies or headers
A hosted API can capture an authenticated page when it supports the site’s authentication mechanism. For example, the Screenshot API documentation describes a cookies parameter in name=value; name2=value2 form, repeatable custom header values, and an HTTP basic-auth option. Its documented final-page status response header can help identify a login or error page: the documentation says a 401 or 403 indicates one. That syntax is specific to that provider, not a universal screenshot API standard. ScreenshotOne likewise describes cookie-based rendering for authenticated pages when the site permits custom authentication data and does not block automation, or when you own the site; its guide is a vendor-specific example, not a promise that every service can authenticate to every site: ScreenshotOne’s authenticated-pages guide.
- Choose a supported mechanism. Check the API’s documentation for the exact cookie, header, or basic-auth parameter names and formats. Confirm that the target’s login method is compatible.
- Provide only the required credential. Where supported, scope cookies and headers to the target host. Do not put secrets in a public URL, source repository, or broadly accessible request logs.
- Request the protected URL. Follow the API’s documented encoding and redirect behavior. If the site uses a browser-only login flow or storage beyond cookies, a simple cookie parameter may not be enough.
- Validate the result. Check the final-page status signal, when available, and inspect the image itself. A successful API response does not prove that the expected account or page was rendered.
Use Playwright when authentication needs a browser
Playwright is a better fit when the site requires interactive login or browser behavior the API cannot reproduce. Its browser contexts are isolated, and its documented storage-state flow can reuse cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey/WebAuthn state. Standard storage-state persistence does not include session storage; Playwright documents a separate save-and-restore approach for that case. See Playwright’s authentication guide.

The following Node.js example assumes you have already saved authenticated storage state to playwright/.auth/user.json. That state must have been created through an authorized login flow and must remain protected. It opens the target using the saved state, waits for navigation to complete, and writes a full-page screenshot:

For a site that needs more time to render, wait for a meaningful selector or other site-specific readiness condition before taking the screenshot rather than assuming navigation alone means the content is ready.

Create and protect the storage state
Use Playwright’s authentication workflow to sign in, confirm that login succeeded, then save the context’s storage state for reuse. Keep the resulting file out of version control and restrict access: Playwright warns that it may contain cookies and headers that can impersonate the account. Treat it like a password; if exposed, revoke or rotate the affected credentials.
If the page depends on session storage, follow Playwright’s separate documented save-and-restore pattern. Do not assume a standard storage-state file has preserved it.

- The screenshot shows a login screen. The cookie may be expired, scoped to a different domain or path, or lost across a redirect. Confirm that the session is current and that the request reaches the intended host. The site may also require local or session storage rather than cookies alone.
- The provider reports 401 or 403. For the Screenshot API documentation described above, those final statuses indicate a login or error page. Recheck the credential, supported parameter format, and whether the account is allowed to view the page.
- The API returns an image, but its contents are wrong. Inspect the image rather than relying on HTTP success. A renderer can successfully return a screenshot of a login, access-denied, or other unintended page.
- The site needs an interactive or bot-protected flow. A static cookie or header may not be sufficient. Use a browser workflow only where authorized, and do not assume a screenshot provider can complete challenges or bypass a site’s access controls.
- Playwright loses authentication after saving state. Check whether the site relies on session storage, which standard storage-state persistence does not include, or whether the session has expired. Use Playwright’s separate documented session-storage pattern where appropriate.
- Credentials may have leaked. Remove exposed state files or logs from accessible locations and revoke or rotate the relevant credential. Saved browser state can enable account impersonation.
Choosing between an API and Playwright
There is no measured performance comparison established here. Choose based on the site’s authentication and the operational work you can support:
