To screenshot a logged-in page that opens in a new tab, capture the new tab—not the original one. In Firefox, switch to the tab and choose Take Screenshot from the context menu, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux and Command+Shift+S on macOS. For automation, wait for the popup before clicking the link or button, then screenshot the popup page. Check that the expected signed-in content is visible before saving.
Take the screenshot manually in Firefox
- On the signed-in page, click the link or button that opens the page in a new tab.
- Switch to the new tab and confirm it shows the page and account state you intend to capture. A new tab does not guarantee that a particular site’s authentication carries over.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose the visible area for what is currently on screen, or select Save full page to include below-the-fold content.
These menu labels and shortcuts are Firefox-specific. For other browsers, consult that browser’s own screenshot instructions.
Capture the new tab with Playwright
In Playwright, the tab opened by a click is a separate Page object. Register the popup wait before the action that opens it; otherwise, the event may occur before the script begins waiting. The popup event signals that initial navigation has begun, not that the page is fully ready or authenticated.

Waiting for domcontentloaded is a synchronization point, not proof that the content you need has appeared. Check the page for the expected signed-in state before relying on the image.

Listen for any new page in the browser context
If the new tab is not a popup associated with the source page, listen for a new page event on the browser context instead. This approach covers newly created pages such as links using target="_blank".

Choose what part of the page to capture

Firefox also offers a full-page save in its screenshot tool. Choose the scope that includes the information you need while avoiding unrelated page content.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect captures
- The screenshot shows the original tab. Capture the
Pagereturned by the popup wait or new-page event, not the source page. - The popup wait hangs or misses the tab. Start waiting before clicking. Use
page.waitForEvent('popup')for a popup from that page, orcontext.waitForEvent('page')for a new page in the context. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete. A load-state wait only indicates a navigation milestone. Confirm the content you need is present before capture, and choose a wait or page-specific condition suited to the site.
- The new tab is logged out. Authentication carryover depends on the site and is not established by Playwright’s popup or screenshot documentation. Inspect the tab and confirm its account state; do not treat a successfully opened tab as proof of authentication.
- The capture omits content below the fold. Use
fullPage: truein Playwright or Firefox’s Save full page option. - A wait for
networkidleis unreliable. Playwright discourages relying on that state as a universal readiness signal for testing. Prefer a meaningful page-specific condition and verify the actual content.
