To capture a Google search results page at exact dimensions, set both the viewport width and height before capturing, then take a viewport screenshot—not a full-page screenshot. For a one-off image, use Chrome DevTools. For repeatable captures, set the viewport in Playwright before navigating to Google.
Capture a fixed-size Google SERP in Chrome DevTools
- Open the Google results page you want to capture, or open Chrome DevTools first.
- Turn on the Device Toolbar using the device/viewport toggle in DevTools.
- Choose Responsive mode, then enter the required width and height in the viewport fields. Chrome’s documentation illustrates the fields with 480 by 415 pixels; that is an example, not a recommended SERP size. Chrome DevTools Device Mode documentation
- Load the intended query and check the visible page state, including whether a consent prompt is present. Avoid resizing after setting the dimensions if you need to preserve the setup.
- In the Device Toolbar, open More options and choose Capture screenshot. This captures the visible viewport. Choose Capture a full size screenshot only if you want content extending below the fold.
For an interpretable record, save the query, width, height, browser version, device pixel ratio or output scaling, and capture date with the image. A consistent setup helps compare captures, but it does not make Google’s results identical over time.
Automate the capture with Playwright
Set the viewport when creating the page or browser context, or call page.setViewportSize() before navigating. Then use page.screenshot() with fullPage: false to capture just the visible viewport. Playwright advises setting dimensions before navigation because some sites do not expect a phone-sized page to be resized after loading. See the Playwright Page API and Playwright screenshot tools.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
try {
await page.goto('https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aexample.com', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.screenshot({
path: 'serp.png',
fullPage: false,
scale: 'css'
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace the example query with your target. The viewport here is 1365 by 900 CSS pixels, chosen as an example; use your required dimensions instead. The timeout is an upper bound for navigation, not a guarantee that every result or late-loading element has finished rendering. If your capture requires a particular page state, add an appropriate wait for that state before taking the screenshot.
Choose the output scale deliberately
scale: 'css'maps one screenshot pixel to one CSS pixel, so a 1365 by 900 viewport produces a 1365 by 900 image.scale: 'device'uses device pixels. On a high-DPI setup, the output can have more pixels than the CSS viewport dimensions.fullPage: falsekeeps the output to the viewport. SetfullPage: trueonly when you intentionally need the scrollable page beyond the visible area; it is not a fixed-viewport SERP capture.
To choose a different size without recreating the page, call await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 }) before page.goto(). The width and height describe the page viewport, not the outside dimensions of the browser window.

Choose the right capture mode
| Need | Use | What the output represents |
|---|---|---|
| A one-off capture | Chrome DevTools Device Toolbar | The currently visible viewport at the dimensions entered. |
| Repeated or scripted captures | Playwright with viewport set before navigation | A viewport screenshot controlled by your script and selected output scale. |
| Visible SERP at fixed dimensions | Viewport capture | Only what fits in the specified width and height. |
| Documentation extending below the fold | Full-page capture | Content beyond the viewport; dimensions differ from a fixed viewport image. |

ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns a screenshot. For example, this cURL request captures a page at a set viewport size:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aexample.com -d width=1365 -d height=900 -d format=png -o serp.png
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting fixed-viewport captures
- The image has the wrong dimensions: Check the viewport width and height, not the outer browser window size. In Playwright, confirm the viewport is set before navigation and select
scale: 'css'if you want one output pixel per CSS pixel. - The capture includes content below the fold: In DevTools choose Capture screenshot, not Capture a full size screenshot. In Playwright, set
fullPage: false. - The image is larger than expected: Check whether device-pixel output was selected. Use CSS scale for dimensions matching CSS pixels.
- The layout changes after resizing: Set the viewport before navigating rather than changing it after the page loads.
- The screenshot shows a consent prompt or another overlay: The capture records the current page state. Note whether the prompt was visible; if it should be absent, resolve the prompt in the browser before capture or use an appropriate capture workflow.
- The screenshot differs on another date or run: A fixed viewport controls the capture geometry, not the result set Google chooses to display. Record the query and capture date, and avoid treating one image as a permanent or universal SERP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a fixed viewport guarantee the same Google results every time?
No. It fixes the capture dimensions, not Google’s displayed results. Record the query and capture date when preserving a screenshot for comparison.
Should I use a viewport screenshot or a full-page screenshot?
Use a viewport screenshot for a SERP at specified visible dimensions. Use full-page capture only when you need content below the fold.
