To capture a useful before-and-after comparison, start with the banner visible in a clean browser context, save a screenshot, click the site’s actual Accept control, then save a second screenshot using the same framing and a different filename. In Firefox, Developer Tools can capture the whole page or just the banner. The images show what changed on screen; they do not by themselves prove which cookies were stored or whether the site’s consent behavior is compliant.
Prepare a clean, consistent comparison
- Make the banner appear. Open the target page in a private or incognito window, which avoids consent cookies stored in your regular browsing context. If you need to use your usual profile, clear the site’s cookies in Chrome through DevTools > Application > Storage > Cookies, select the site’s origin, then use the clear-all action. Clearing cookies may also remove other site state, so a fresh private window is usually simpler for a one-off capture.
- Keep the conditions steady. Use the same browser, browser version, URL, viewport size, zoom, and page position for both shots. If the comparison must be repeatable, note the browser version and region: banner presentation and behavior may vary by region.
- Choose the framing. Capture the whole page if you need context around the banner, or capture only the banner if you are documenting its design. Use the same framing and device-pixel ratio for both images.
- Save the before image. With the banner visible, capture it and use a distinct filename such as
cookie-banner-before.png. - Accept using the page’s control. Click the actual button or control labeled Accept, or the equivalent control the site provides. Wait for the page to settle; do not merely hide or remove the banner element, because that does not test what happens when a visitor accepts.
- Save the after image. Capture again with the same framing, using a different name such as
cookie-banner-after.png. Keep both originals and note the action and conditions used.
Capture screenshots in Firefox
Firefox’s Developer Tools support full-page and single-element screenshots. As Firefox Source Docs explains, “You can use the Developer Tools to take a screenshot of the entire page, or of a single element in the page.”
Capture the whole page or a banner element
- Whole page: Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Settings > Available Toolbox Buttons. Open Developer Tools and use the screenshot button to capture the page.
- Banner only: In the Inspector, select the banner node and use Screenshot Node. This captures the selected element rather than the entire page.
Use the Web Console for a delayed or selector-limited capture
Firefox’s Web Console :screenshot helper supports a filename, delay, device-pixel ratio, full-page capture, and CSS selector options. A delay can help when you need a transient state to appear; a selector limits the screenshot to the selected element and its descendants. Consult Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot documentation for the current syntax and options. Use matching values for both captures so the images remain comparable. Firefox warns that saving twice to the same filename overwrites the earlier image.
Use Chrome to reset consent state, not Firefox capture instructions
The Chrome steps documented here concern cookie state, not Chrome’s screenshot controls. To inspect or clear stored cookies, open DevTools > Application > Storage > Cookies and select the relevant origin. Chrome’s cookie table includes domain, path, expiry, HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite fields, and provides a clear-all action. For a straightforward screenshot workflow, use a clean browser context and the capture controls documented for your browser.

The pair documents the visible change after the click: whether the banner or overlay disappeared and what page content became visible. It does not establish that the site stored the expected consent choice, blocked or allowed the right cookies, or met a legal standard. A visually dismissed banner is not proof that consent was implemented correctly.
If you need to investigate what happened technically, inspect cookie storage and network traffic separately:

- In Chrome, inspect the site’s cookies in DevTools > Application > Storage > Cookies before and after the action.
- In Firefox, use the Network Monitor’s Cookies tab to view cookie details sent with requests or returned in responses.
These are observations to investigate, not a compliance verdict. Chrome can also temporarily limit third-party cookies from its Privacy and security panel and show blocked or exempted status. That temporary setting requires a reload to apply. Record it, and do not mistake its effects for the site’s consent choice.
For repeated checks across pages
For a recurring visual check, Sitepager documents a service workflow that uses a click selector on one or two representative pages and takes a screenshot before and after the click. Its guide recommends a separate, narrowly scoped scan for checking banner appearance or button dismissal. This is a vendor-specific workflow, not a browser standard, and the screenshots alone do not verify consent functionality.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. For a before-and-after test, make one request before accepting and another after the site’s Accept control has been clicked in the relevant browser session; a screenshot API call does not itself click that control or establish a consent state.

Use a different output filename for the later capture. ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture by default, so that behavior is unsuitable when the goal is to show the banner itself. Each step can be turned off; disable consent/banner removal for the before image, and make sure the site’s actual Accept action occurs before the after image. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
