To find Indian listed companies that can withstand energy-price pressure, screen within one industry, compare normalized energy intensity over at least three years, and then verify EBITDA, operating cash flow, production mix, tariffs and disclosure quality. Energy intensity is a useful cost-exposure proxy, not a direct electricity-price or investment signal. A company can report low energy use per rupee of sales because it sells high-value products, outsources production or changed its reporting perimeter; a commodity producer can show high intensity yet earn durable margins through pricing power.

This guide shows how to turn BRSR and annual-report data into a sector-aware shortlist without confusing efficient operations with a temporary product mix or accounting effect.

What an energy-and-margin screen can—and cannot—tell you

Energy affects Indian companies through purchased electricity, fuel, captive generation, open-access renewable power, grid charges and tariffs. The effect differs sharply by sector. A cement kiln, textile dyeing plant, aluminium smelter and software office cannot be ranked on one common energy-intensity threshold. Start with peers that make comparable products under similar operating conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BRSR disclosures commonly provide energy intensity per rupee of turnover. That ratio divides reported energy consumption by revenue, so it captures both physical efficiency and the value of what a company sells. It does not tell you the exact rupees paid per kilowatt-hour, how much power was hedged, whether fuel was self-generated, or whether customers ultimately absorbed the increase.

  • Useful signal: a multi-year fall in intensity while margins and cash generation remain stable or improve.
  • Ambiguous signal: a one-year low ratio caused by a richer product mix, weak-energy businesses growing faster, outsourcing or a boundary change.
  • Potentially misunderstood signal: high intensity at a commodity producer that has strong pricing power, low-cost captive power or long-term fuel contracts.

Your output should therefore be a shortlist for deeper analysis, not an automatic buy list.

1. Define a comparable Indian peer set

Choose one industry and one reporting period

Begin with one industry classification and a consistent fiscal period, normally the latest year for which every candidate has a full BRSR or annual-report disclosure. Do not rank a software company against a cement or textile producer. Even within an industry, separate integrated manufacturers from asset-light assemblers when their energy footprints are structurally different.

Use consolidated figures for all companies or standalone figures for all companies. Mixing the two can include subsidiaries’ factories for one issuer and exclude them for another. Record the fiscal year end and whether the numbers cover continuing operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set inclusion rules before looking at results

  • Require at least three years of comparable energy and financial data where available.
  • Exclude issuers with unexplained perimeter changes until you reconcile prior years.
  • Separate companies with materially different product mixes, geographies or utilization rates.
  • Flag financial years with plant closures, commissioning, acquisitions, strikes or unusual weather.
  • Decide whether the screen is for operating resilience, transition risk or both; the weighting will differ.

2. Build the energy data sheet from BRSR and annual reports

Create one row per company and retain the original reported unit in a notes column. Capture the following fields rather than copying only the headline intensity ratio.

Field What to record Why it matters
Total energy consumed Electricity, fuel and other energy in the issuer’s stated unit Shows the absolute footprint and helps reconcile ratios.
Renewable electricity Purchased renewable power, certificates or other sources as separately disclosed May reduce exposure to fossil-fuel volatility, but contract terms and additionality matter.
Non-renewable electricity Grid and other non-renewable supply Links the business to tariffs, grid charges and fuel mix.
Fuel consumption Coal, gas, oil, biomass or process fuels, with units Fuel can dominate costs even when electricity intensity is low.
Energy intensity per rupee of turnover Reported denominator and unit (for example, GJ per crore or MJ per rupee) Allows revenue-normalized comparison after unit checks.
Physical-output intensity Energy per tonne, litre, unit or other production measure, when disclosed Separates plant efficiency from selling-price and mix effects.
Boundary and assurance Consolidated or standalone perimeter, estimation, restatement and assurance provider or status Determines how much confidence to place in the number.

One FY2024-25 issuer example states that its calculations follow Part A, Section 1(I) of the Industry Standards Note (December 2024) on BRSR Core, issued by ASSOCHAM, CII and FICCI pursuant to Regulation 34(2) of the SEBI (LODR) Regulations, 2015 and SEBI Circular No. SEBI/HO/CFD/CFD-SEC-2/P/CIR/2023/122. Treat that wording as a description of the calculation framework, not proof that every issuer has identical data quality.

3. Normalize units, revenue and reporting boundaries

Convert only when the source supports the conversion

Energy may be reported in gigajoules (GJ), megajoules (MJ), kilowatt-hours (kWh), tonnes of oil equivalent or another unit. Convert only when the report provides, or clearly implies, the conversion basis. Keep both the source value and your converted value so another analyst can reproduce the calculation. If no basis is given, leave the original unit and mark cross-company comparison as limited.

Check the revenue denominator

Confirm whether turnover is stated in rupees, millions of rupees or crores. A lakh-or-crore scaling error can make a sound company appear hundreds of times more or less efficient. Use the same revenue concept across peers: turnover where the BRSR ratio uses turnover, and not a substituted figure such as EBITDA or net sales unless you document the difference.

Reconcile consolidated and standalone numbers

Read the scope note beside the energy table. A consolidated energy figure may include overseas plants, joint ventures or recently acquired subsidiaries that were absent from earlier years. If the boundary changed, rebuild the trend on a like-for-like basis or label the trend as non-comparable.

4. Measure direction, not just the latest rank

For each company, calculate the year-over-year change and a three-year change in both energy intensity and profitability. A simple three-year percentage change is:

((latest intensity ÷ earliest comparable intensity) − 1) × 100

Negative values indicate falling intensity. Also calculate the compound annual rate when all three annual observations are comparable. Preserve the sign and the number of years; a two-year change is not equivalent to a three-year trend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read combinations of trends

Energy intensity Margin trend Initial interpretation
Falling Stable or rising Most attractive operating pattern; verify that mix and perimeter did not create the improvement.
Falling Falling Efficiency may be overwhelmed by pricing, utilization or other input costs.
Rising Stable or rising Could indicate pricing power, a high-value mix or pass-through; investigate before rejecting.
Rising Falling Highest immediate concern; examine tariffs, fuel, outages, utilization and one-off costs.

Do not treat a single low ratio as superior. A company that reports a 10% decline after selling more high-margin, low-energy products may not have improved its factories. Physical-output intensity, when available, is the better cross-check.

5. Join energy metrics to profitability and cash flow

Use several margin definitions

Add EBITDA margin, operating margin and operating-cash-flow margin for the same periods. EBITDA margin highlights operating resilience before depreciation; operating margin reflects depreciation from energy-related equipment; cash-flow margin tests whether accounting profit turns into cash. Keep the denominator consistent with the issuer’s reported figures and note any exceptional items.

As an interim sector reference, National Stock Exchange of India data for Nifty 50 companies as of December 31, 2025 reported a 9MFY26 EBITDA margin of 20.8% for the Nifty 50 Energy sector, 16.7% for Materials, 22.4% for Industrials, 45.2% for Utilities and 34.4% for the Nifty 50 overall. These are nine-month benchmarks, not full-year targets and not a substitute for issuer-level statements.

Check capital intensity and cash conversion

  • Compare operating cash flow with EBITDA over several years; persistent divergence can signal working-capital stress or weak pass-through.
  • Record maintenance and expansion capital expenditure. A lower energy ratio achieved only after unusually heavy capex may carry a different return profile from an improvement achieved through process changes.
  • Inspect debt and interest costs when energy projects are financed; a saving in power expense can be offset by financing burden.
  • Separate recurring energy savings from insurance recoveries, subsidies, carbon credits or other one-off income.

6. Investigate how the company actually buys and uses energy

Electricity tariffs and grid exposure

Read the management discussion and notes for tariff revisions, demand charges, time-of-day pricing, open-access fees, wheeling charges and state-specific electricity rules. Two plants using the same number of kWh can have very different bills because of geography and contract structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Captive generation and renewable contracts

Identify captive power plants, group-captive arrangements, rooftop solar, power-purchase agreements and renewable-energy certificates. Ask whether the reported renewable share is backed by physical supply, a contractual instrument or an accounting allocation. Check capacity, intermittency, banking rules and any minimum offtake obligation. A high renewable percentage does not automatically mean a lower near-term cost.

Fuel, hedging and pass-through

For fuel-intensive producers, record coal, gas, furnace-oil or biomass prices, import exposure and hedging policy. Determine whether contracts fix prices, cap increases or merely delay them. Then look for customer contracts, surcharge clauses and competitive conditions that determine how quickly higher energy costs can be passed through.

Utilization and product mix

Energy per unit often rises when plants run below capacity because fixed loads are spread across fewer units. A shutdown or commissioning year can therefore distort the ratio. Reconcile utilization, product mix and geographic mix with the intensity trend before crediting management with a permanent efficiency gain.

7. Use physical-output intensity whenever possible

Revenue-normalized intensity is indispensable for a diversified company but can mislead when prices move sharply. Physical-output measures—such as GJ per tonne of cement, kWh per garment or fuel per litre—help identify process efficiency. They are still not perfect: product grade, quality requirements, plant age, climate and transport can change the required energy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a company discloses both measures, compare them side by side. If revenue intensity falls while physical intensity is flat, the improvement probably came from prices or mix. If both fall, investigate whether production technology, utilization or sourcing changed. If physical intensity improves but margins fall, energy may be only one of several cost pressures.

8. Score disclosure quality before scoring efficiency

A precise-looking ratio with weak disclosure deserves less weight than a slightly worse ratio with transparent, assured data. Add a separate disclosure score or traffic-light flag.

  • Amber: two or three years available but estimates, partial assurance or an unresolved scope change.
  • Red: missing denominator, unexplained restatement, no energy-source breakdown or a ratio that cannot be reconciled to the financial statements.

Do not fill missing cells with zero. Use “not stated” and keep the company out of a strict ranking until the gap is resolved.

9. Build a practical screening score

A transparent score prevents one attractive metric from dominating the decision. Weight the components to suit your mandate, but document the weights and never compare scores built from different peer sets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Component Example question Suggested treatment
Energy trend Has comparable intensity declined over three years? Rank within the industry; reward consistent improvement, not a single-year low.
Physical efficiency Is energy per unit falling? Give extra weight where production data are reliable.
Renewable and sourcing resilience Are contracts, captive assets and tariffs disclosed? Reward transparency and credible cost protection, not renewable percentage alone.
Margin level and trend Are EBITDA and operating margins stable? Compare with sector context and the issuer’s own history.
Cash conversion Does operating cash flow support reported profit? Penalize persistent divergence without a clear working-capital explanation.
Pass-through power Can prices or surcharges recover energy inflation? Assess contracts, concentration and competitive intensity.
Disclosure quality Are scope, assurance and estimates clear? Apply a confidence haircut when evidence is incomplete.

The score is a prioritization tool. Before any investment decision, read the latest annual report, BRSR, results presentation, debt disclosures and material-event filings.

10. Sector-specific interpretation

Materials and cement

These businesses normally have high physical energy use. Focus on fuel mix, kiln or furnace efficiency, waste-heat recovery, captive power, freight and pricing discipline. A high intensity ratio is not disqualifying if the company consistently passes costs through and generates cash.

Textiles and chemicals

Steam, thermal fuel, dyeing and process electricity can dominate costs. Product grade, order mix and plant utilization matter. Pioneer Embroideries Limited reported an FY2024-25 EBITDA margin of 8.43% and discussed rising power costs as a profitability constraint; that example shows why an energy screen must test the causal link to margins rather than assume that a low ratio guarantees profitability.

Industrials and engineering

Separate fabrication shops from foundries, forging and heat-treatment operations. Project timing can make revenue volatile, so use physical output and backlog context where disclosed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Utilities and energy producers

Generation efficiency, plant-load factor, fuel contracts and regulated tariffs are more informative than a simple turnover ratio. Distinguish an operator’s own consumption from energy sold to customers.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Asset-light and technology businesses

Office electricity may be modest relative to revenue, but data centers, leased facilities and outsourced cloud workloads can move energy outside the reported perimeter. A low intensity ratio should not be treated as evidence of superior industrial efficiency.

11. Use grid information for context, not as a substitute for company costs

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency lists FY2024-25 annual energy-audit reports for distribution companies including APDCL, APEPDCL, AVVNL, BESCOM, BRPL and BYPL, among others. These reports can help you understand grid losses, demand patterns and distribution conditions in relevant states. They do not reveal what a particular listed company paid after its contract terms, captive generation, open-access charges and hedging. Keep grid context in a separate worksheet.

12. A repeatable workflow for quarterly updates

  1. Lock the peer set: choose one industry, geography and consolidated or standalone basis.
  2. Collect source documents: download the latest BRSR, annual report, results presentation and relevant notes for each issuer.
  3. Enter raw values: copy units, denominators, renewable and non-renewable splits, fuel and physical-output data exactly as reported.
  4. Normalize: convert units only with a documented basis and retain original values and scope notes.
  5. Calculate trends: compute year-over-year and three-year changes for intensity, EBITDA margin, operating margin and cash-flow margin.
  6. Reconcile: investigate differences between BRSR energy totals, financial statements and management commentary.
  7. Read the mechanism: identify tariffs, contracts, captive assets, hedges, utilization, mix and pass-through terms.
  8. Score confidence: mark assurance, estimates, missing physical data and perimeter changes.
  9. Review exceptions: manually inspect the top and bottom candidates before publishing or investing from the list.
  10. Refresh after material events: update for acquisitions, plant commissioning, major tariff orders, fuel shocks or restatements rather than waiting for the next annual cycle.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Ranking all sectors together: rebuild the analysis by industry and operating model.
  • Calling intensity an electricity price: add tariff, fuel and contract evidence before estimating cost exposure.
  • Using one year: calculate a comparable multi-year trend and annotate abnormal periods.
  • Ignoring revenue inflation: check physical-output intensity and product prices.
  • Mixing scopes: standardize consolidated versus standalone data and investigate acquisitions.
  • Counting renewable share as guaranteed savings: read the contract, wheeling, banking and intermittency notes.
  • Accepting unaudited precision: downgrade confidence when assurance or estimation is unclear.
  • Overlooking cash flow: test whether energy savings appear in operating cash, not only EBITDA.

What a high-quality shortlist looks like

The strongest candidates are not necessarily the companies with the lowest reported energy intensity. They are businesses whose comparable intensity is stable or falling, whose EBITDA and operating margins hold up across cycles, whose operating cash flow supports earnings, and whose reports explain the role of tariffs, sourcing, utilization and mix. They also disclose enough information—and with enough assurance—for you to know when the thesis is wrong.

Use the screen to decide which annual reports deserve a full investment review. Do not turn a BRSR ratio into a stand-alone buy signal, and do not discard an energy-intensive producer until you understand its pricing power and cost structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find Indian stocks with low power costs?

Start with companies in the same industry, collect BRSR energy intensity and source-of-power data, then verify tariffs, fuel contracts, captive generation and operating cash flow. The ratio alone does not disclose the rupees paid per unit of electricity.

Which Indian companies have the best energy efficiency and margins?

There is no universal winner because sectors have different physical processes and pricing models. Rank peers on comparable multi-year intensity, EBITDA and operating-margin trends, cash conversion, pass-through ability and disclosure quality.

How do I use BRSR data to screen stocks?

Extract total, renewable and non-renewable energy, fuel, energy intensity per turnover and any physical-output intensity. Standardize units and reporting scope, calculate trends, reconcile the figures to financial statements and apply a confidence flag for assurance and missing data.
