If you need Walmart category data for seller or supplier item setup, use Walmart’s authenticated taxonomy APIs rather than scraping Walmart.com pages. GET /v3/items/taxonomy returns either the Product Type hierarchy or the legacy category hierarchy, while GET /v3/utilities/taxonomy returns taxonomy for a specific item-spec feed and version. The official material does not establish permission or a dependable method for collecting public consumer browse pages, so treat that as a separate legal and technical question.
First, identify what “Walmart categories” means
The correct implementation depends on the data you need and the Walmart program you use. Marketplace and supplier APIs expose structured taxonomy for item placement; they are not documented as an export of every category page or product listing visible on Walmart.com.
| Need | Documented route | Result |
|---|---|---|
| US Marketplace item classification | GET /v3/items/taxonomy |
Product Type hierarchy when a supported version is supplied; legacy category taxonomy when it is omitted. |
| Global Marketplace classification | GET /v3/items/taxonomy |
Category, Product Type Group (PTG), and Product Type data for a supported market such as us, ca, mx, or cl; headers and version rules are context-specific. |
| Taxonomy matching an item specification | GET /v3/utilities/taxonomy |
Categories and subcategories for a selected feed type and item-spec version, or category → PTG → Product Type data. |
| Public Walmart.com browse pages | Not established by the official API references summarized here | Permission, terms, and a reliable collection method require separate review. |
How Walmart’s taxonomy hierarchy is organized
In the newer Product Type model, the hierarchy is:
- Category — the broad department-level grouping.
- Product Type Group (PTG) — a grouping inside a category.
- Product Type (PT) — the classification used for item setup and attributes.
The utilities endpoint can instead return a category and subcategory structure containing subCategoryId values. Do not assume those IDs or levels are interchangeable with Product Type IDs.
Authentication and prerequisites
These are authenticated integration APIs. Before calling them, obtain the credentials and access token required for your Marketplace, Global Marketplace, or supplier program. Walmart’s references also require program-specific headers and a unique correlation ID. Exact header names, market values, and token procedures can change, so check the current endpoint reference for your program before shipping code.

- Confirm whether the integration is US Marketplace, Global Marketplace, or supplier.
- Record the market or feed type (
us,ca,mx, orclwhere applicable). - Choose a supported taxonomy or item-spec version.
- Keep the access token out of source control and logs.
- Generate a unique correlation ID for every request.
Retrieve US Marketplace taxonomy
For US Marketplace, Walmart documents two behaviors for GET /v3/items/taxonomy:
- Include a supported
versionto request the Product Type taxonomy. The US reference lists version 5.0 as supported and states that US supports 4.x and 5.x. - Omit
versionto request the older category-based taxonomy.
The following command is a template. Replace the placeholders with values issued for your integration and with the headers required by the current US reference.
curl -G "https://marketplace.walmartapis.com/v3/items/taxonomy"
-H "WM_SEC.ACCESS_TOKEN: YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN"
-H "WM_QOS.CORRELATION_ID: YOUR_UNIQUE_CORRELATION_ID"
-H "WM_SVC.NAME: YOUR_SERVICE_NAME"
-H "Accept: application/json"
--data-urlencode "version=5.0"
To request the legacy category form, remove the version parameter. Do not hard-code a version indefinitely: Walmart publishes new taxonomy releases and may retire older identifiers.
Choose the taxonomy-by-item-spec endpoint when the feed controls the answer
Use GET /v3/utilities/taxonomy when your item workflow is tied to a particular item specification. Select the feed type and version that match the specification you will submit. The response may be a category → PTG → PT hierarchy or a category → subcategory structure with subCategoryId.

A generic request shape is shown below; parameter names and required headers must be verified against the current reference for your feed and market.
curl -G "https://marketplace.walmartapis.com/v3/utilities/taxonomy"
-H "WM_SEC.ACCESS_TOKEN: YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN"
-H "WM_QOS.CORRELATION_ID: YOUR_UNIQUE_CORRELATION_ID"
-H "Accept: application/json"
--data-urlencode "feedType=YOUR_FEED_TYPE"
--data-urlencode "version=YOUR_ITEM_SPEC_VERSION"
Persist the returned hierarchy together with the feed type, version, retrieval timestamp, and IDs. That prevents an item saved against one specification from silently being interpreted under another.
Supplier and global integrations need version discipline
Supplier documentation lists time-sensitive taxonomy identifiers, including 5.0.20260803-17_50_56 for the September 2026 Item Setup and Maintenance API release and 5.0.20260304-22_45_32 for the April 2026 release. These are release values, not permanent constants; verify the current list before implementation.
Global Marketplace uses the same general /v3/items/taxonomy path but has market-specific feed types and header rules. Confirm the exact market and version in the current global reference rather than reusing US request assumptions.

A production-safe retrieval workflow
- Define the consumer. Decide whether your downstream process needs Product Types, legacy categories, or item-spec categories and subcategories.
- Confirm program and market. Write down US Marketplace, Global Marketplace, or supplier, plus the applicable feed type.
- Resolve the version. Select a currently supported taxonomy or item-spec version from Walmart’s reference.
- Authenticate. Obtain an access token and send all required Walmart headers, including a unique correlation ID.
- Fetch and validate. Check the HTTP status, response schema, hierarchy level, and presence of IDs before storing data.
- Store provenance. Save version, feed type, market, retrieval time, and raw response alongside your normalized table.
- Map items. Use the returned IDs and hierarchy in the matching item setup or maintenance feed.
- Refresh deliberately. Recheck versions and mappings when Walmart announces API updates; do not overwrite historical mappings without a migration plan.
Normalize the response without losing meaning
A useful internal model keeps the source level explicit:
marketandprogramtaxonomy_mode(Product Type, legacy category, or item-spec category/subcategory)versionandfeed_typecategory_id,ptg_id,product_type_id, andsub_category_idwhere supplied- display names and parent relationships
retrieved_atand the raw payload
Never infer a Product Type ID from a subcategory ID, and never discard the version that gave an ID its meaning. Keep a parent-child table so you can detect moved or retired nodes during refresh.
What this API does not prove about consumer-page scraping
Calling the Marketplace taxonomy API is not the same as scraping Walmart.com. The reviewed official references describe seller, supplier, and Marketplace integration APIs. They do not establish that API access authorizes automated collection of public retail pages, nor do they answer what Walmart.com terms permit. If your requirement is a catalog of consumer browse URLs, review the current Walmart terms, obtain permission where needed, and have counsel assess your planned volume, storage, and redistribution.
Troubleshooting
401 or 403 responses
Your token may be missing, expired, or issued for a different program. Re-authenticate, confirm the endpoint is available to your account, and verify every required Walmart header.
Rank #4
400 for version or feed type
The version may not be supported for that market or feed. Remove version only when you intentionally want the US legacy category response; otherwise select a currently documented pairing.
Unexpected hierarchy
You may be reading a legacy category response as Product Types, or using the utilities endpoint when your process expects the item taxonomy endpoint. Log the endpoint, version, feed type, and top-level keys with every import.
Missing subcategories
Category/subcategory data is tied to the selected item-spec feed and version. Check that both parameters match the specification used by your item feed.
Mappings break after a refresh
Compare IDs and parent paths by version instead of replacing records in place. Stage the new snapshot, produce a diff, then migrate affected items deliberately.

Best Value
Rate limits or intermittent failures
Use bounded retries with exponential backoff for transient responses, preserve the correlation ID in logs, and cache a validated snapshot for reads. Do not repeatedly fetch the same taxonomy during each item submission.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Taxonomy is reference data, so a scheduled snapshot is usually safer than a request for every item. Cache by market, program, endpoint, feed type, and version. Refresh on a schedule aligned with Walmart releases, and trigger an earlier refresh when an item submission reports an unknown or retired classification. Keep raw responses for auditability and normalized tables for fast lookup.
Walmart API access requirements, quotas, and commercial terms depend on your program and current agreement; the material available here does not establish a universal request price or quota. Budget engineering time for token management, schema validation, version migration, and monitoring rather than assuming an anonymous, unlimited public endpoint.
Or skip the browser setup
If your legitimate goal is a visual snapshot of a page you are authorized to access—not structured Walmart taxonomy—ScreenshotNeo can capture it through one request. It is not a substitute for Walmart’s taxonomy API and does not grant permission to collect consumer pages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the taxonomy endpoint return Walmart product listings?
No. It returns taxonomy structures for documented Marketplace or supplier integration workflows, not a product catalog or consumer browse-page export.
Should I use the legacy category response or Product Types?
Use the hierarchy required by the item workflow you are implementing. Supply a supported version for Product Types; omit it on the US Marketplace endpoint only when the legacy category form is intentionally required.
Can ScreenshotNeo replace the taxonomy API?
No. ScreenshotNeo produces visual captures. Walmart’s authenticated taxonomy endpoints provide the structured IDs and relationships required for item setup.
