Short answer: “Scraping Facebook” means using software to collect data from Facebook pages or interfaces designed for people. A page being visible to the public is not blanket permission to automate collection. In 2026, the defensible approach depends on whose data you need: export information from your own account, use Meta’s scoped Ad Library tools for advertising research, or obtain explicit authorization and check applicable privacy and platform rules before collecting anything else.
What Facebook scraping means
Meta’s Facebook Help Center defines scraping as “the automated collection of data (for example, using software to collect data) from a website or other interfaces and features built for people.” A person reading a page and a program repeatedly collecting pages are different activities. Automation can include a script requesting profile pages, posts, comments, images, Page details or search results and storing the responses.
“Public” describes who can see something in Facebook’s interface. It does not, by itself, establish permission to copy it at scale, combine it with other personal information, or reuse it for a new purpose. Meta distinguishes authorized crawling or collection from unauthorized scraping, with compliance depending partly on its terms, permissions and applicable policies.

- Sign in to Facebook and open Settings & privacy, then Settings. Depending on the current interface, you may also reach these controls through Accounts Center.
- Open the Your information area and choose the control for downloading, accessing or transferring your information. Facebook also provides Access Your Information and Activity Log views for reviewing account activity.
- Select the categories you need, such as posts, photos, messages or activity, where those categories are offered.
- Set a date range, file format and media quality. Narrow date ranges and categories make the resulting archive easier to handle.
- Request the file, complete any identity or security checks, and download it from Facebook when it is ready. Keep the archive in protected storage and delete copies you no longer need.
The exact labels and available categories can change. These controls are evidence of a way to obtain your own information; they do not authorize collecting another account’s content.
How to research ads with Meta’s Ad Library
For advertising transparency, start with Meta’s Ad Library. Its documented API is a scoped research source, not a general-purpose Facebook scraper.
Current documented coverage
- Political and social-issue ads delivered anywhere in the world during the preceding seven years.
- Ads of any type delivered in the United Kingdom or European Union during the preceding year.
- Available fields include ad creative, the associated Page name and ID, delivery dates, and where an ad appeared.
These periods are operational scope figures in Meta’s current documentation accessed in 2026, not claims about the age of Facebook or a statistical study. Coverage, fields, API versions and eligibility can change, so check the live Ad Library API documentation immediately before building an integration.
Access prerequisites
The onboarding flow includes a Facebook account and a Meta for Developers account and app. Political or social-issue access may require identity and location confirmation. Plan for an application review or additional verification if Meta requests it, and store credentials outside source code.

What the API is—and is not
Use the API to query the ad archive within its documented categories and dates. It does not provide a blanket export of posts, profiles, comments or every Page. Do not treat an ad record as permission to republish personal information or creative outside the purpose and rights you have established.
Collecting other Facebook content: questions to resolve first
If your project involves profiles, posts, comments, images or group content belonging to other people, pause before writing a crawler. Resolve these questions in writing:
- Whose data is it? Identify users, Pages, groups and any people mentioned in the content.
- What is the purpose? Define the narrow business, academic or journalistic purpose and avoid collecting fields you do not need.
- What is the lawful basis? Depending on people, purpose and jurisdiction, this may involve consent, another lawful basis, contracts, public-interest rules or sector-specific requirements. There is no universal answer.
- What do Meta’s terms allow? Check current platform terms, developer policies, robots or API requirements and any permission granted by the account owner.
- How long will you retain it? Set a deletion schedule and document why retention is necessary.
- How will you secure it? Restrict access, encrypt sensitive exports, log use and prepare a process for deletion or correction requests.
- Are transfers or publication involved? A private research dataset and a public database create different risks. Obtain specialist legal advice for your jurisdiction when the consequences are material.
Meta’s US Regional Privacy Notice, effective May 23, 2025, describes categories such as identifiers, online activity, location-related information, photos, videos and other content, including information obtained from users, other people, devices, Meta companies, partners and publicly available sources. That notice explains Meta’s US practices and rights; it does not decide whether an independent collector may reuse the same information elsewhere.
Why bypassing controls is not a safe scraping method
Meta says it uses rate limits, data limits, pattern recognition, investigations, account enforcement and requests to hosting companies to remove unauthorized datasets. It also says scrapers can mimic legitimate use and that it cannot completely prevent scraping without harming normal use.

Those statements describe defenses, not a checklist for evasion. Do not disguise automation, defeat CAPTCHAs, rotate accounts to avoid limits, bypass login controls or seek leaked datasets. Such actions can violate terms, expose personal data and make your security and legal position worse. If an official endpoint does not provide a field or volume you need, treat that as a product boundary and seek permission or redesign the project.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The profile is public, so I can copy everything.”
Cause: confusing audience visibility with automated-use permission. Fix: identify a documented API, an export for your own account, or explicit authorization; minimize fields and document your basis.
“The Ad Library API should return every post.”
Cause: treating an ad-transparency archive as a general Facebook database. Fix: limit queries to the documented ad categories, regions, dates and fields.
“My request gets blocked or returns incomplete data.”
Cause: rate limits, data limits, authentication, unsupported fields or a policy restriction. Fix: read the current endpoint documentation, reduce scope, handle documented errors and request access through the official developer process. Do not attempt to bypass the control.

“The export contains more personal information than expected.”
Cause: selecting broad categories or a long date range. Fix: narrow the request, protect the archive, inventory fields and delete unnecessary copies.
“Our team wants to publish a dataset of posts.”
Cause: moving from internal analysis to disclosure without reassessing rights and privacy. Fix: conduct a new legal and privacy review, remove unnecessary identifiers and obtain permission where required.

Official exports and APIs are generally more predictable than repeatedly loading consumer pages, but neither guarantees a particular completion time or field set. Design for asynchronous work, retries that respect documented limits, pagination, checkpointing and schema changes. Record the API version, request date, filters and consent or authorization records so results can be reproduced without collecting again.
Estimate storage from the fields and media you actually need. Keep raw exports separate from transformed analytical tables, encrypt both where appropriate, and restrict production credentials. A free or public page is not necessarily free to process: review, compliance, storage, moderation and deletion work can dominate infrastructure cost.
