Short answer: there is no universal permission to scrape Amazon product pages. The practical choices are (1) manual, limited research where the terms for your marketplace allow it, (2) Amazon’s conditional Product Advertising API for eligible Associates, or (3) a data service whose contract explicitly authorizes the collection and reuse you need. Amazon’s robots.txt documentation describes how Amazon’s own crawlers visit other websites; it does not authorize third parties to crawl Amazon.
Before collecting anything, define the marketplace, purpose, volume, fields, retention period and publishing plan. Then check the current terms and program policies for that marketplace. Do not treat an API key, a public page, or an ASIN as blanket permission to copy, aggregate or republish product content.
What “scrape Amazon” can mean
People use the word scrape for several different activities:
- Reading one product page manually for personal research.
- Running a browser script that extracts visible fields from a page you have opened.
- Calling an official Amazon interface to obtain licensed product information.
- Collecting thousands of pages, prices, reviews or listings and storing them in a database.
Those activities have different contractual, technical and program consequences. A one-time lookup is not the same as a price-monitoring database, and access to one Amazon marketplace does not establish rights in another.

What Amazon’s published rules distinguish
Marketplace terms can restrict extraction and reuse
Amazon UK’s Conditions of Use & Sale say: “You may not utilise any data mining, robots, or similar data gathering and extraction tools to extract (whether once or many times) for re-utilisation any substantial parts of the content of any Amazon Service, without our express written consent.” The same terms say users may not create or publish a database featuring substantial parts of the service, giving prices and product listings as examples.
This is contractual wording for the UK marketplace, not a worldwide legal ruling. Other Amazon sites can have different terms, and the wording can change. Check the conditions that apply to the marketplace and account you will use. Nothing in this article determines whether a particular collection is lawful under your country’s copyright, contract, privacy or competition rules.
The Associates API is conditional access, not a scraping exemption
Amazon Associates offers a Product Advertising API route, but access requires all of the following:
- An open Amazon Associates account.
- Compliance with the Associates Operating Agreement.
- A separate application for API access.
- Compliance with the API license, specifications and current program policies.
The Product Advertising Content license is narrow. It is provided for participation in the Associates program, with a principal purpose of advertising and marketing an Amazon site and driving sales there. The policies also address extraction, repurposing, caching and display. An API credential therefore does not grant a general right to build an unrestricted product database, copy reviews, or republish Amazon content for an unrelated purpose.
Robots.txt describes Amazon’s crawlers, not your permission
Amazon’s About Amazonbot documentation explains how webmasters can control Amazonbot and other listed Amazon agents on their own websites. It discusses Robots Exclusion Protocol directives, caching and bot-specific exceptions. The subject is Amazon-operated crawlers visiting other sites. It is not an authorization for your script, browser, proxy or data service to crawl Amazon retail pages.
Associates activity rules are separate again
Associates participation requirements prohibit artificially generated clicks or impressions and creating Amazon sessions by robot or software program. If your workflow opens affiliate links or sessions, compliance with those rules is separate from the question of whether you may extract page content. An affiliate relationship does not provide extra crawling rights.
Compare the three practical routes
| Route | Does Amazon directly provide or authorize it? | Eligibility | Purpose, display and reuse | Freshness and limits | Implementation effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual research | You access the site as a visitor, subject to the marketplace terms and applicable law. | Usually an ordinary account or guest visit, where available. | Best for limited, human-reviewed notes. Do not assume that copying substantial portions or publishing a database is allowed. | Current at the time of viewing; no dependable automation rate. | Low, but labor-intensive and hard to reproduce. |
| Associates Product Advertising API | Yes, through a conditional program license. | Open Associates account, application approval and continuing policy compliance. | Use only for program purposes and according to the license and specifications. Retention, caching and display rules apply. | Amazon’s help page states an initial 1 request per second, increases tied to qualifying shipped revenue, and a 10-request-per-second maximum. Verify current limits before implementation. | Moderate: credentials, signing or SDK setup, policy checks and error handling. |
| Third-party data service | Only if its contract and collection method authorize your intended use; the service cannot grant rights it does not possess. | Depends on the provider, geography, target marketplace and your use case. | Read collection, resale, attribution, retention, indemnity and downstream-use terms. Ask how Amazon content is licensed. | Depends on the service’s update schedule, quotas and source access. Treat freshness claims as contractual, not assumed. | Often lower engineering effort, but requires vendor due diligence and ongoing cost. |
A compliant do-it-yourself workflow for limited research
Use this workflow only after checking the terms for the relevant marketplace. It is designed for a small, human-supervised set of pages, not a method for bypassing bot checks or building an unlicensed catalog.
- Write down the intended use. Specify the fields you need, such as title, current displayed price, availability text and a URL. Decide whether the result stays private, appears in an editorial article, or feeds a commercial service.
- Check the marketplace terms and your program status. The UK extraction language cited above is not automatically the rule everywhere. If you are an Associate, read the current Operating Agreement, API license and participation requirements.
- Open pages normally. Use a standard browser, do not defeat a CAPTCHA or access control, and stop when Amazon presents a bot challenge, denial page or unusual verification request. A failed automated load is not an invitation to try proxy rotation or fingerprint evasion.
- Record only the minimum needed. Save the URL, ASIN, retrieval time and fields necessary for the stated purpose. Avoid copying full descriptions, images, reviews or seller data when a short factual note is sufficient.
- Review the result by hand. Amazon pages can show different prices, sellers, delivery dates and availability by location, account and time. Treat a displayed value as a time-stamped observation, not a permanent fact.
- Delete or refresh according to your permission. Do not retain content longer than the applicable license or contract allows. If you publish a comparison, explain the retrieval date and marketplace rather than implying universal pricing.
Optional browser-console extraction for one already-open page
If the marketplace terms and your purpose permit it, this small JavaScript snippet reads text already rendered in the current tab. It does not send requests, bypass controls or crawl additional URLs. Amazon changes its markup, so selectors may stop working and must never be treated as an official interface.

const pick = (selectors) => {
for (const selector of selectors) {
const node = document.querySelector(selector);
if (node && node.textContent.trim()) return node.textContent.trim();
}
return null;
};
const record = {
url: location.href,
retrievedAt: new Date().toISOString(),
title: pick(['#productTitle', '[data-feature-name="title"]']),
price: pick(['#corePrice_feature_div .a-offscreen', '.a-price .a-offscreen', '#priceblock_ourprice']),
availability: pick(['#availability span', '#availability']),
rating: pick(['#acrPopover', '[data-hook="rating-out-of-text"]'])
};
console.log(JSON.stringify(record, null, 2));
Validate every field before storing it. A missing value is preferable to guessing from a similarly named element. Never extend this into an unattended loop without separately establishing that the collection and reuse are permitted.
Using the official Product Advertising API
Enrollment and policy checklist
- Maintain an open Associates account in the marketplace you intend to serve.
- Apply for API access; an Associates account alone does not automatically provide it.
- Read the current API license and technical specifications before designing storage or display.
- Keep the principal use connected to advertising and marketing the applicable Amazon site and driving sales there.
- Implement the license’s rules for caching, extraction, repurposing and display. Do not assume that an API response may be mirrored indefinitely.
- Review the Associates participation requirements if your application creates or opens Amazon sessions, clicks or impressions.
Rate limits are policy figures, not a performance promise
An Amazon.com Associates Central help page states an initial allowance of 1 request per second. It describes increases tied to $4,600 of qualifying shipped revenue in a trailing 30-day period, up to a stated maximum of 10 requests per second. These are figures from Amazon’s undated help page, crawled September 30, 2026, not an independent benchmark. They may change, and the maximum is not guaranteed to every applicant. Verify the current page and your account’s actual limit before deploying.
Design for throttling anyway: queue requests, use exponential backoff for transient errors, honor response headers, avoid duplicate lookups, and keep a clear audit trail of when and why each request was made. If your purpose is unrelated to Associates advertising, do not try to force the API into being a general catalog feed.
Evaluating a third-party data service
A vendor can reduce browser automation work, but it cannot cure an authorization problem. Before signing up, obtain written answers to these questions:

Rank #3
- Which Amazon marketplace and page types are covered, and under what collection authority?
- Does the contract permit your exact use: internal analysis, editorial display, resale, alerts, or model training?
- What fields are collected, and are reviews, images, seller names or customer information included?
- How long may you retain raw and normalized data, and must you delete it on request?
- How are freshness, outages, bot challenges and incorrect values reported?
- What quotas, geographic restrictions, liability terms and audit records apply?
Do not select a provider solely because it claims to “scrape Amazon.” Ask for the legal basis, permitted downstream uses and a current service description. If the answers are vague, limit the project to manual research or seek legal advice for your jurisdiction.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an Amazon product-data license. Use it only for pages you are authorized to access and capture. It returns a rendered PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; it does not turn a screenshot into permission to copy or republish Amazon content.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets, with each step switchable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current parameters. A single call looks like this:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.amazon.com/' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo includes full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, hidden selectors, request and resource blocking, custom headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable caching TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Those controls help produce a clean visual record; they do not change Amazon’s terms.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing gives two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it without a card.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Access denied,” a CAPTCHA or an unexpected verification page
Stop the automated workflow. Do not rotate proxies, spoof fingerprints or attempt CAPTCHA evasion. Record that the page was unavailable and use an authorized API, manual review or a contractually approved service instead.
The console script returns null
The selector may have changed, the page may not have finished rendering, or the value may be supplied only after a location or account decision. Inspect the visible DOM manually, wait for the element, and record “not observed” rather than substituting a guess.

Prices and availability can vary by marketplace, delivery address, seller, membership status and time. Store retrieval time, currency, seller context and URL. Compare only observations made under equivalent conditions.
API requests are throttled
Lower concurrency, queue work and back off on 429 or transient responses. Check the account’s current allowance and the latest Associates help page; do not assume the stated 10-request-per-second ceiling applies to you.
A vendor supplies data but cannot explain its rights
Pause production use and request the collection authority and downstream-use terms in writing. A technical feed without clear permission is not a safe substitute for the official API.
The screenshot is blank or contains overlays
For an authorized page, wait for a selector or network idle, hide a known overlay, or use ScreenshotNeo’s consent and popup-removal options. Check the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers so a failed load is not mistaken for product data.
Performance, reliability and cost planning
- Start with the smallest dataset. Prove that each field is necessary before increasing volume.
- Separate acquisition from publishing. Keep raw observations, normalized values and public copy in different stores so a license change does not silently affect published material.
- Use idempotent jobs. A stable key such as marketplace, ASIN, field set and retrieval window prevents duplicate requests.
- Track provenance. Log URL, marketplace, timestamp, account or vendor route, response status and any page-verdict information.
- Budget for review. Browser pages, APIs and vendors can all return stale, localized or incomplete values. Human review is part of the cost of trustworthy comparisons.
- Plan for policy changes. Recheck terms, licenses, quotas and retention rules before each major release, not only when code breaks.
FAQ
Does an ASIN make a product page free to copy?
No. An ASIN identifies a catalog item, but it does not grant rights to reproduce the surrounding title, description, images, reviews, prices or database structure.
Best Value
Can I publish a price I observed manually?
That depends on the marketplace terms, your jurisdiction and the way you present and reuse the information. A dated factual observation is different from republishing substantial portions of Amazon’s content or maintaining a comprehensive price database; obtain advice for a commercial project.
Should I treat a screenshot as an archival record?
Only with a defined retention policy. A screenshot preserves what a particular viewer saw at a particular time and location; it does not prove that the price, seller or availability remains current.
