To run a YouTube playlist-rotation script at a specified India Standard Time (IST) hour on Debian, first make sure the cron daemon uses IST for its schedule, then run a script that uses authorized YouTube Data API requests to make the playlist change you intend. On conventional Debian cron, putting TZ=Asia/Kolkata in a crontab changes the command’s environment, not the time cron uses to launch the job.
1. Set the timezone cron uses
Check the Debian host’s current timezone and installed cron implementation before changing anything. The timezone behavior described here is documented in Debian’s trixie cron manual; check the manual for the package installed on your system if you are using a different Debian release or cron implementation.

Set the system timezone if it is appropriate for the host:

Verify the result with
timedatectl statusordate. Do this before choosing the hour and minute in the crontab.
Debian Reference also documents sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata as an alternative way to configure the system timezone. A system timezone change can affect other cron jobs and services on that host, so consider those dependencies first.
The Debian trixie crontab(5) manual explains the key distinction: “Even if a user specifies the TZ environment variable in his crontab this will affect only the commands executed in the crontab, not the execution of the crontab tasks themselves.” In other words, a crontab line setting TZ=Asia/Kolkata is not, by itself, a reliable way to make conventional Debian cron trigger in IST.

If the host must stay in another timezone
Do not assume a crontab timezone setting changes the trigger time. Use a scheduler implementation that explicitly supports per-job timezones, after verifying that feature for the installed implementation, or use a wrapper that checks the current IST time and runs the task only at the intended minute. A wrapper needs careful testing for missed or duplicate runs and time changes. Debian’s cron manual recommends checking date and time in the child process when a schedule cannot be expressed in cron syntax.
2. Schedule the script
Edit the crontab for the user that will run the automation:
crontab -eCron uses five schedule fields: minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. For a script intended to run every day at 06:15 in the configured system timezone, add:

15 6 * * * /usr/bin/python3 /home/playlistbot/rotate_playlist.py >> /home/playlistbot/rotate_playlist.log 2>&1Replace the time, interpreter, username-specific paths, script, and log location with values that exist on your host. Use absolute paths: cron does not necessarily start with the same working directory or environment as an interactive shell. The redirection appends both standard output and errors to the log so failures are visible. Ensure the cron user can read the script and credentials and write to the log.
3. Decide what “playlist rotation” means
Cron only starts a command; it does not provide a built-in YouTube playlist rotation action. Use the YouTube Data API and define the exact change your script should make:
- Move an existing video: retrieve its playlist-item ID and update its position.
- Add a video: insert a playlist item for the video.
- Remove a video: delete the corresponding playlist item.
- Rebuild or replace an order: combine reads and the required updates, inserts, or deletes.
playlistItems.list reads the current items; playlistItems.insert, playlistItems.update, and playlistItems.delete perform the corresponding changes. Playlist writes require suitable OAuth authorization for an account permitted to manage that playlist. Store credentials securely for the operating-system user that runs the cron job; the API documentation does not prescribe one universal credential-storage design.

For a reorder
Keep the playlist ID, video IDs, and playlist-item IDs returned by the API distinct. An update targets a playlist item and sets snippet.position to a zero-based position. Position changes require manual playlist ordering; Google documents the manualSortRequired error when an update attempts to set a position on a playlist that is not manually ordered. Some special playlists do not support insert or update operations.
Before coding, decide what should happen when the playlist is empty, a video is missing or private, or the API call fails partway through. Make retries safe where possible: check the current state before writing so a repeated run does not insert duplicates or undo an already completed change. YouTube exposes discrete list and write operations; it does not provide a built-in cron rotation feature.

These are the costs currently stated in Google’s API reference and may change. Avoid insert or update calls when the desired state is already present. Log enough context to identify the scheduled run and API error without writing secrets or tokens to the log; inspect the log after the first run and after any failed run.
