Loki’s reviewed documentation shows how to run tests in CI, but does not document a built-in time scheduler or provider-specific schedule syntax.
What Loki schedules—and what it does not
Loki is for visual regression testing of Storybook, not a general-purpose scheduler for taking screenshots of arbitrary websites. Its test command captures Storybook screens and compares them with reference images. To run that check regularly, schedule a CI workflow that makes Storybook available and invokes Loki.
The recurrence, manual-run option, and schedule syntax depend on your CI provider. Check that provider’s current documentation for the exact configuration; Loki’s documented CI example does not specify it. Loki also does not start the Storybook server for you, so the workflow must build or serve Storybook before testing.
Prepare Loki references before scheduling recurring runs
1. Create and review the baseline
Use Loki’s reference-update workflow to create initial screenshots, then review them before treating them as the expected appearance. The Loki getting-started guide covers getting a project set up, while the CLI documentation describes its commands.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
2. Keep scheduled tests separate from baseline approval
A scheduled check should run Loki in test mode, not automatically approve new screenshots. When a run finds differences, inspect the current captures and diff output; update or approve references only after confirming that the visual change is intentional.
Configure the recurring CI workflow
- Make Storybook available. Build a static Storybook or start it in the environment in a way Loki can access. Loki’s CI example builds Storybook as a static site and uses a file URI.
- Make references available to the job. Keep reference screenshots in the repository or otherwise ensure the CI job can access them. A run without the intended baseline cannot provide a meaningful comparison.
- Run Loki in test mode. The official Loki CI example uses
--requireReferenceand--reactUri file:./storybook-staticafter building the static Storybook. For example, the core test invocation is:
loki --requireReference --reactUri file:./storybook-static
Use the appropriate package-script or executable invocation for your project, and confirm the flags against the current Loki CLI documentation. --requireReference makes a missing reference image fail the run rather than letting the check pass without a baseline.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- Add recurrence in the CI provider. Configure the provider’s workflow scheduler to invoke the job at the cadence you want. Also consider enabling a manual dispatch if your provider supports it, so you can verify changes without waiting for the next scheduled run.
- Retain useful output. Configure CI artifacts, if available, to preserve current screenshots and differences for review. Artifact retention and scheduler behavior are provider-specific; Loki’s directory names do not establish how long CI keeps files.
Where Loki writes screenshots and differences
The Loki CLI documentation lists these default output locations:
| Output | Default directory | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Reference screenshots | ./.loki/reference |
Expected images used for comparison. |
| Current screenshots | ./.loki/current |
Images captured by the latest run. |
| Difference images | ./.loki/difference |
Visual comparison output to inspect when a test fails. |
These are the documented defaults; check your project’s Loki configuration and current CLI documentation if you have customized output paths.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Make scheduled runs reproducible
A recurring job is useful only if its inputs are stable enough for meaningful comparisons. Keep the Storybook build, browser execution environment, and available reference images consistent between runs. Loki’s repository lists execution targets including Chrome in Docker, Chrome in AWS Lambda, local Chrome, and iOS and Android simulators; consult the current Loki repository for compatibility details before choosing a target.
When choosing a CI scheduler, check whether it supports the recurrence you need and manual dispatch, whether it can reliably build or access Storybook, and whether it can retain screenshots and diffs for review. Treat a changed screenshot as a finding to investigate, not as permission to rewrite the baseline.

Troubleshoot failed scheduled checks
- Loki cannot reach Storybook: The build or server may not be ready, or the URI may point to the wrong location. Ensure Storybook is available before Loki runs and verify the URI; the documented static-build pattern is
file:./storybook-static. - The run fails because a reference is missing: With
--requireReference, this is expected when a required baseline is unavailable. Create and review references through the update workflow, then make them accessible to the CI job. - The run reports visual differences: Review the current and difference outputs. Determine whether the change is intended before using Loki’s update or approve commands to change references.
- Scheduled runs behave differently from local runs: Compare the Storybook build and browser/device target used in each environment. The chosen CI provider’s runtime and scheduling details are outside Loki’s documented scheduler guidance.
- You cannot find Loki schedule settings: Configure recurrence in your CI provider’s workflow scheduler. Loki’s reviewed documentation describes CI test execution, not a native time scheduler.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots of ordinary web pages rather than Storybook visual-regression checks, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the API documentation. For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
