To stream a pre-recorded video at a scheduled time, create the live event in YouTube Studio, then use FFmpeg as the encoder to send the video file to YouTube at real-time pace. Scheduling creates the event and its watch page; it does not start playback. For a scheduled stream, check the incoming preview in Live Control Room and select Go live unless you have deliberately enabled auto-start.

What scheduling does—and what FFmpeg does

YouTube Studio creates the scheduled live event, where viewers can find the watch page and set reminders. FFmpeg sends your video and audio to that event as an encoder feed. These are separate parts of the workflow: a scheduled event does not automatically play a file, and starting FFmpeg does not by itself create or schedule a YouTube event.

YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check account readiness before planning an event around a tight deadline. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream.
  2. Choose to reuse settings or create a new event. Set the event details and schedule, then save it. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions describe scheduling and setup.
  3. Copy the event’s watch-page URL if you want to share it with viewers. Scheduling allows viewers to find the upcoming event and receive reminders.
  4. Review the event’s auto-start behavior. With manual start, you will inspect the encoder preview and select Go live in Live Control Room. If auto-start is enabled, the transition may differ; confirm the setting and test it in advance.

Get the stream URL and protect the stream key

Open the scheduled event’s live settings in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room and copy the provided stream URL and stream key. Use the exact ingest details and protocol YouTube supplies for that event. The stream key works like a password: do not show it in screenshots, publish it in a script, add it to source control, or expose it in logs. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement.

Keep the URL and key private as well as the computer or account where you store them. Avoid sharing a complete command containing the key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection details and event workflow.

Choose a compatible FFmpeg output

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it. Do not treat one bitrate as correct for every stream: resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity affect the choice. Follow the exact protocol and ingest URL shown for your stream.

The key pacing option for a file input is -re. FFmpeg documents it as reading input at its native frame rate, which is useful for simulating a live input. Without real-time pacing, a file can be read faster than its playback duration. FFmpeg’s documentation covers input options, output formats, and stream handling.

Transcode when you need to control the output

Re-encoding lets you choose an output codec and bitrate compatible with the intended profile, but encoding consumes CPU or GPU resources and can change the source’s quality. Match the video and audio settings to YouTube’s current recommendations and your reliable upload headroom. The template below is illustrative, not a guaranteed command for every file, build, or protocol:

Replace the file path, endpoint, and key with your own values; never paste a real key into a public example. This template intentionally omits video bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, scaling, and stream mapping because the appropriate choices depend on the source and target profile. Some FFmpeg builds may not include libx264. Check the encoders available in your installed build and adjust the options and output format to match the precise protocol instructions YouTube provides.

Stream copy only when the source already fits

Stream copy avoids re-encoding, but it is suitable only when the source codecs, container handling, timestamps, and ingest requirements are compatible with the destination. Consult FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation and check the actual file before relying on it. If the source does not meet YouTube’s current requirements, transcode instead.

Map the intended tracks in files with multiple streams

A file may contain multiple video or audio tracks, subtitles, or alternate language tracks. In that case, inspect the file and add explicit -map options so FFmpeg sends the intended video and audio. Do not assume the first audio track is the one you want. Audio conversion, scaling, and frame-rate conversion may also be needed for the chosen output profile.

Start FFmpeg, inspect preview, and go live

  1. Start FFmpeg at the planned time using the prepared input and the event’s connection details. For manual scheduling, allow enough time for the incoming encoder feed to appear before the event start.
  2. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check that the expected picture and sound are present and that the stream status and quality are acceptable.
  3. Confirm the watch page is accessible as intended, then select Go live for a manual-start event. If you configured auto-start, verify the event’s behavior instead of assuming the command alone will change the event to live.
  4. Monitor the stream and connection during the event. YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time, checking preview, verifying watch-page access, and monitoring stream quality; see its live-streaming tips.

Starting FFmpeg at a particular clock time is separate from scheduling the YouTube event. An operating-system scheduler or wrapper could launch a command, but that is separate automation and does not replace the Studio event or guarantee its transition from preview to live.

Stop the stream and check the archive

When the broadcast is over, stop FFmpeg from sending content, then end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube Help currently states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this platform limit can change, so check the current YouTube live-stream archiving guidance before relying on it. Verify the resulting archive in Studio after processing.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • No event or live-stream option: Check that live streaming is enabled for the account. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s setup guidance.
  • FFmpeg connects but the event does not go live: An upcoming event may still need an operator to inspect preview and select Go live. Check whether auto-start is enabled rather than treating a running encoder process as proof the event is live.
  • No incoming preview: Recheck the event’s stream URL, key, and protocol; confirm the key belongs to the scheduled event and has not been reset. Verify that the output is using a format and settings YouTube accepts.
  • Wrong picture, language, or audio: Inspect the source’s available tracks and use explicit stream mapping. Confirm that the selected audio is present and that any required audio conversion is configured.
  • FFmpeg cannot find an encoder: The installed build may not include the encoder named in the command. Check available encoders and use a supported one, or install a build that provides the required encoder.
  • Unstable or degraded stream: Compare the selected profile and bitrate with YouTube’s current settings table and the upload connection’s reliable capacity. Reduce the output demand if needed and test before the event; YouTube’s recommendations are profile-dependent.
  • Stream stops at the end of the file: FFmpeg sends the media file; it does not automatically repeat it. For a single scheduled playback, that may be expected. If you need repeated playback, configure a deliberate looping workflow and test event behavior rather than assuming the scheduled event will restart itself.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream continues from the cloud when your computer is off.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
