OBS can play podcast episodes from a local playlist and send them to a YouTube live stream, but its built-in VLC playlist is not a clock-based scheduler. Use it to play episodes in order or loop them; if episodes must start at set times, add and carefully test a separate automation tool. YouTube Studio scheduling handles the event page and reminders, while OBS handles playback and the encoder feed.
What OBS can schedule—and what it cannot
There are two separate jobs: YouTube Studio can schedule an upcoming live event, while OBS sends the video and audio feed. OBS’s VLC Video Source can play multiple media files as a playlist, loop the list, or shuffle it. The official OBS documentation does not establish a built-in feature for launching individual episodes at particular clock times.
- Want continuous playback? Put episodes in the VLC playlist and choose whether it should loop.
- Want an episode at a specific time? You will need a separate automation layer, such as a third-party OBS plugin. Check its current documentation and test the exact OBS version, source behavior, and scene changes before relying on it. A 2023 OBS forum post describes one user’s Advanced Scene Switcher attempt, but it is anecdotal and notes a source-visibility issue; it is not a guaranteed procedure.

Set up an ordered or looping episode playlist
1. Prepare the files and VLC
Store the podcast recordings in a stable local folder and play each file before adding it to OBS. OBS supports common media types through its media sources. For a sequence of files, use the VLC Video Source playlist rather than assuming that several individual Media Sources will form a timed queue.

Install VLC for the VLC Video Source to be available. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for supported media types and source properties.
2. Create a scene and add the VLC Video Source
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the podcast stream.
- In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video Source.
- Open the source properties and add the episode files to its playlist in the intended order.
- Check the playlist options. Loop Playlist is on by default and Shuffle Playlist is off by default. Leave shuffle off for a planned episode sequence; turn looping off if the list should play only once.
Menu names can vary across OBS versions. Consult the current source properties documentation if the controls differ in your installation.

3. Decide what happens when the source is hidden
OBS documents VLC visibility options, including stopping playback when a source is not visible and restarting it when visible. Choose behavior deliberately if your show changes scenes: a hidden source may not behave as you expect. Test whether playback continues, pauses, stops, or restarts when the podcast scene is hidden and shown again. Hiding the OBS application window is not the same as hiding the source in a scene.
4. Test the playlist
Play the scene and confirm that the first episode starts, the next file follows in the right order, and the loop or one-pass behavior matches your plan. Watch OBS’s audio meters and listen for levels, silence, or clipping. The OBS Quick Start Guide recommends checking audio and testing before streaming.

Schedule the YouTube live event separately
A scheduled YouTube event can create an upcoming watch page and let viewers opt into reminders. It does not schedule the files inside OBS or replace the encoder feed. You need to configure the event in YouTube Studio and connect OBS separately.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set the event’s title, description, privacy, and other available details.
- In the event’s stream settings, obtain the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and connect the account or enter the stream URL and key as appropriate for your setup.
- At the planned time, start streaming from OBS so YouTube receives the encoder feed. Confirm the preview in Live Control Room before directing viewers to the event.
YouTube’s interface and channel eligibility can affect the options shown. Follow the current YouTube live stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions.

If episodes must start at specific times
The VLC playlist handles queue order, shuffle, and looping; it is not documented as a clock scheduler. For a timetable such as “episode one at 9 a.m., episode two at noon,” use an additional automation tool only after verifying that it supports your OBS version and can control the intended source or scenes.
- Test the automation with the same scene visibility settings you will use live.
- Verify what happens if an episode runs long, ends early, or OBS misses a trigger.
- Check how the workflow recovers after an OBS restart or a disconnected YouTube feed.
- Do not treat old forum posts as current plugin instructions; confirm the plugin’s own current documentation.
Check channel eligibility and stream readiness
YouTube may require channel verification and live-streaming eligibility. For a channel enabling live streaming for the first time, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours; that is not the time needed to schedule an episode. Check the channel’s current status and restrictions in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Before depending on a long broadcast, test the full path: playlist playback, audio and video in OBS, the YouTube preview, and access to the scheduled event. YouTube recommends preparing in advance and monitoring stream quality; see YouTube streaming tips.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive threshold does not guarantee uninterrupted operation for a nonstop broadcast, and it should not be taken to mean that an encoder feed will run indefinitely.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing | VLC is not installed, or OBS and VLC architectures do not match. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the Sources add menu. |
| Only one episode plays, or the order is wrong | The files were not added as a VLC playlist, or the list order is incorrect. | Open the VLC source properties, confirm every file is listed, and arrange the list in the intended order. |
| The playlist stops after its last file | Loop Playlist is off. | Enable Loop Playlist if the queue should repeat. The documented default is on, so verify the setting rather than assuming it changed. |
| Episodes play in a different order each time | Shuffle Playlist is enabled. | Turn shuffle off for a fixed sequence. The documented default is off. |
| Playback stops or restarts after a scene change | The VLC source’s visibility behavior is set to stop or restart when hidden. | Review the source’s visibility options and test scene changes before going live. |
| YouTube event exists but shows no live picture or sound | The event is scheduled, but OBS has not connected and started sending its encoder feed, or the stream connection details are incorrect. | Check OBS’s stream configuration and output status, then inspect the event preview in Live Control Room. |
| Audio is missing or too quiet | The source is not producing audio as expected or the OBS mix is misconfigured. | Play the file locally, check OBS audio meters and monitoring, and run a short test before the event. |
