Schedule the YouTube events separately from the video playout on your Hetzner server. YouTube’s scheduled event is a broadcast; the server-side encoder chooses and sends the playlist for that event. To run different playlists at different times, create an event for each programming block, bind each event to the appropriate incoming stream, and schedule the matching server job to start at the event time.

How the schedule works

You are coordinating two systems, not asking YouTube to rotate local files. A YouTube liveBroadcast represents the scheduled event, while a liveStream represents the incoming audio and video feed from your encoder. The playlist and its playback order are controlled by the playout process on the Hetzner server or another encoder. YouTube explains the relationship in its broadcasts and streams guide and broadcast lifecycle documentation.

For events at different times that share the same encoder settings, YouTube documents reusing one stream resource for multiple broadcasts. A broadcast is bound to exactly one stream. If events overlap or need different stream settings, plan for separate stream resources as appropriate.

Plan the playlists and event schedule

Prepare one ordered playlist for each programming block

Make the intended file order explicit on the server. Keep separate playlist definitions for distinct events, and check that each file opens and plays correctly. Files in a sequence may differ in codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio layout, or container; whether they can be sent as-is or need conversion depends on the actual media and FFmpeg configuration.

FFmpeg’s concat approach can feed sequences of media files, and a secondary example shows a looping text playlist sent to an RTMP destination. Treat that example as a starting point, not a production-ready command: test it with your files, installed FFmpeg build, target protocol, and transition requirements. See the playlist example.

Set event times and confirm channel readiness

For every programming block, record the YouTube event title, scheduled start time, privacy status, intended playlist, and stream resource. The Live Streaming API requires a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status when creating a broadcast. The account must be authorized and enabled to livestream; YouTube documents permission errors for accounts that are not enabled or are blocked from live streaming.

Create and connect the YouTube events

  1. Create or identify an incoming stream. In the Live Streaming API, a liveStream holds the feed settings used by the encoder. YouTube’s guide describes delivery settings such as frame rate, ingestion type, and resolution. Reuse a stream for events at different times when the settings are shared; choose separate streams when overlap or different settings make that necessary. Start with the YouTube broadcasts and streams guide.
  2. Create one broadcast for each event. Set its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Each event is a distinct broadcast, even if several events use the same incoming stream.
  3. Bind each broadcast to its stream. Use the API’s liveBroadcasts.bind operation to associate the event with the intended stream. Check the association before the event; the broadcast and stream are separate resources.
  4. Configure the encoder from the stream’s delivery settings. Use the ingestion details supplied for that stream. Match the encoder output to the selected protocol and the media being played; do not assume settings for one ingest protocol apply to another.
  5. Test the broadcast lifecycle. YouTube’s lifecycle includes testing and live states. Send a test feed and verify the event and media before scheduling unattended playback. Consult Life of a Broadcast for the documented states and transitions.

Schedule server-side playout on Hetzner

For each event, configure a server scheduler to launch the corresponding playlist process at the planned time. The scheduler might be a cron job or a systemd timer, but the exact implementation depends on the server’s operating system and your process-management requirements. The reviewed Hetzner server documentation does not provide a streaming-specific timer recipe, server-size prescription, or FFmpeg production configuration.

Decide whether each job should stop after its playlist or whether a persistent process should change inputs. Either design needs testing for start and stop behavior, transitions between files, logs, and recovery if the process exits. Do not assume a gap-free handoff or automatic restart unless you have configured and verified it on your server.

There is no universal FFmpeg command for this setup. The correct command depends on whether the inputs can be stream-copied or need transcoding, their codecs and dimensions, the ingest protocol, and the installed FFmpeg build. FFmpeg documents its protocol options, including RTMP; validate your actual command with the intended files and YouTube stream settings before relying on it.

Choose RTMP or HLS deliberately

RTMP and HLS have different ingest requirements, and the choice affects both encoder setup and latency. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP because it is segment-based. For HLS, YouTube’s setup guidance requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. These are HLS requirements, not RTMP settings. Refer to YouTube’s current HLS setup guidance and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Choose a playout design and server size

Decision Option one Option two What to weigh
YouTube stream resources Reuse one stream for events at different times Use separate streams for broadcasts or shows Whether events overlap, whether stream settings differ, and how much encoder reconfiguration is needed. YouTube documents reuse for events at different times.
Ingest RTMP HLS Encoder support, protocol requirements, and latency. YouTube says segment-based HLS has higher latency than RTMP.
Playlist playout One process per scheduled playlist A persistent process that changes playlist inputs Restart reliability, transitions, logs, and compatibility of the actual media. Neither approach is established as universally best; test your implementation.

Do not select a Hetzner server size based on a generic streaming rule. No streaming-specific CPU, memory, storage, or network prescription is established in the reviewed Hetzner documentation. Measure the workload you plan to run, including whether you transcode, the output resolution and bitrate, how many jobs may run at once, and the amount of media stored.

Rights, reliability, and troubleshooting

Before scheduling unattended playback

  • Confirm you have the rights needed to livestream every video and audio track in each playlist.
  • Check that the channel is enabled and permitted to livestream before relying on API broadcast creation.
  • Verify playlist order, file compatibility, event privacy and start times, stream binding, and encoder delivery settings in a test event.
  • Decide how the server will log failures and restart or alert on a stopped process; configure and test that behavior for your OS and FFmpeg build.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely area to check Practical next step
Broadcast creation or binding returns a permission error Account authorization or livestream eligibility Confirm the account is authorized and the channel is enabled and not blocked from live streaming; review YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle documentation.
The scheduled event starts, but the wrong video or no video arrives Playlist selection, scheduler timing, or broadcast-to-stream binding Check the server job’s playlist path and start time, then confirm the event is bound to the stream configured in the encoder.
Playback fails or breaks at a file transition Input compatibility or concat configuration Test the sequence locally and verify codec, dimensions, audio layout, and the chosen stream-copy or conversion approach with your FFmpeg build.
HLS ingest is rejected or behaves differently from expected HLS segment or HTTP requirements Check TS segment duration, outstanding segment count, HTTPS POST/PUT, and byte-range behavior against YouTube’s HLS requirements.
The server stops sending the feed during an event Process supervision or host workload Inspect the process logs and resource use; test the configured restart and alert behavior. Adjust the server only after measuring the actual playout or transcoding load.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos without keeping a Hetzner server, FFmpeg process, or home computer running, StreamNeo handles the cloud playout. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
