To schedule different playlists during a 24/7 YouTube stream, build each playlist or content block in OBS, place blocks that need different start times in separate scenes, then use Advanced Scene Switcher macros to change scenes at those times. Schedule the YouTube broadcast in YouTube Studio separately: Studio manages the broadcast, while OBS supplies the video and handles the playlist rotation.
Understand what is being scheduled
There are two schedules to manage. The YouTube broadcast is a platform-side event that you create or schedule in YouTube Studio. The programming inside that broadcast—what plays and when—is controlled on the encoder side in OBS. A scheduled YouTube broadcast does not create an OBS playlist timetable for you.
Google’s Live Streaming API likewise treats broadcasts and encoder streams as separate resources that can be bound together. API automation can manage broadcast resources, but it does not configure local OBS media playback. See YouTube LiveBroadcasts and YouTube LiveStreams.
Choose a scheduling method
| Method | Best for | How it behaves | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC Video source in one OBS scene | A fixed sequence of local files | Plays the playlist in order, or shuffles it; can loop | Requires VLC, and a playlist alone does not switch content at clock times. OBS Media Sources |
| Separate scenes with Advanced Scene Switcher | Different content blocks at set times | Macros use date/time conditions and scene actions | Requires a compatible plugin version and testing. Advanced Scene Switcher |
| Media Playlist Source plugin | Playlist editing through a community plugin | Plugin author describes playlist, folder, and shuffle features | Community-maintained; the listed release requires OBS 31 or later. Media Playlist Source |
| YouTube Live Streaming API | Programmatic management of broadcast objects | Creates or manages broadcast and stream resources | Does not schedule or play local OBS playlist content. Broadcasts and Streams |
For a clock-based daily lineup, use separate scenes and scene-switching macros. For a set that simply plays through and repeats, a VLC playlist in one scene may be enough. Decide whether blocks should start at fixed times or only after the previous file finishes; those are different scheduling behaviors.

Prepare your OBS content and scenes
- Plan the lineup. Write down each block, its start time, and whether it repeats daily. For example: morning playlist at 06:00, daytime playlist at 12:00, and evening playlist at 18:00. Specify the time zone and account for daylight-saving changes if your schedule depends on local clock time.
- Keep media files in stable locations. OBS needs to find the local files when it plays them. Avoid moving or renaming media after setting up sources; if paths change, update the source and test playback.
- Add a playlist source. In a scene, add a VLC Video Source, then add the video files in the intended order. Choose loop or shuffle according to the format. VLC must be installed for this source to appear; OBS says a 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources.
- Use a Media Source for one looping file. If a block contains one video, add an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop option rather than making a playlist. OBS documents local video playback and media-source behavior in its media sources guide.
- Create one scene per scheduled block. Name scenes clearly, such as “Morning,” “Day,” and “Evening.” Put the relevant playlist source in each scene. Add any common overlays or audio consistently so that scene changes do not unexpectedly remove them.
Automate the scene changes by time
- Check plugin compatibility. Install an Advanced Scene Switcher build that supports your OBS version. The listed 1.36.1 version supports OBS 31.1.1 or later; compatibility can change, so check the plugin’s current release notes before installing or upgrading. See Advanced Scene Switcher.
- Open the plugin’s macro controls. Create a macro for each boundary in your schedule. Set a date/time condition for when the block should begin and an action that changes to the matching OBS scene.
- Cover every transition. If the lineup changes at 06:00, 12:00, and 18:00, create and verify each corresponding transition. Check the configured time zone and whether the condition is intended to recur daily.
- Test before relying on it. Trigger each scene transition manually, then observe a representative cycle. Back up the OBS scene collection and plugin settings before plugin or OBS upgrades.
Advanced Scene Switcher provides date/time conditions and scene actions, but the documentation does not promise unattended uptime. Treat the macros as scheduling automation that needs operational testing, not as a guarantee that every transition or recovery will succeed.
Connect OBS to a scheduled YouTube broadcast
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Scheduling creates the YouTube-side broadcast; it does not start the OBS playlist schedule. YouTube notes, “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream.” See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure OBS with the stream URL and key. Use the connection details for the YouTube broadcast in OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start the encoder feed. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Go live in Studio when required. For YouTube’s scheduled encoder workflow, start the encoder feed, wait for the preview, and click Go live in Live Control Room. Follow the current on-screen flow for the broadcast you created.
First-time live streaming activation on a YouTube channel may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help. Enable and verify live streaming well before the first scheduled program.

Plan session boundaries, archives, and recovery
Do not assume a single session will archive indefinitely
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish the same archive behavior for one session longer than 12 hours. For a 24/7 operation, verify YouTube’s current behavior and decide how to handle sessions—such as using successive broadcasts—rather than assuming a single extra-long session will be archived. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.
Test the failure cases
- A playlist reaches its end: confirm whether looping is enabled and whether the next file starts as intended.
- A file is missing or moved: verify the source path and test playback after any library changes.
- OBS restarts: confirm the correct scene, sources, and macros are active after relaunch.
- The network drops: test what happens to the YouTube feed and establish an alert and operator recovery path.
- A scene change falls near a session boundary: verify the transition against the actual broadcast lifecycle, not just the OBS scene schedule.
- An update changes compatibility: test the workflow again after OBS or plugin updates and restore from your backup if needed.
OBS and plugin documentation describe playback and automation features; they do not establish an uptime guarantee for an unattended 24/7 stream.
