You can schedule OBS to open a scene containing a YouTube playlist player, then—if you intend to broadcast that player—start streaming with OBS’s launch options. The playlist embed controls playback and looping; Task Scheduler controls when OBS launches. These are separate jobs, so test both the scheduled launch and a complete playlist cycle before relying on them.

How the scheduled rotation works

The setup has three parts: a YouTube playlist, an OBS scene with a browser source that loads that playlist, and a Windows scheduled task that launches OBS. Opening the scene or starting playback does not by itself start a YouTube live stream. To broadcast the playlist, OBS must also be configured for the intended stream and told to start streaming.

Prepare the YouTube playlist player in OBS

1. Create or choose the playlist

Use the YouTube playlist ID in the player URL. YouTube’s embedded-player parameters select a playlist with listType=playlist and list=PLAYLIST_ID, where PLAYLIST_ID is replaced by the actual playlist ID. The player URL should use the YouTube embed format and include those parameters.

2. Add the player to an OBS scene

  1. In OBS, create or select the scene you want to use for the scheduled rotation.
  2. Add a Browser source to that scene and configure it to load the playlist embed URL.
  3. Set the source dimensions to suit the OBS canvas and the video layout you intend to broadcast.
  4. Enable initial playback with autoplay=1 if you want playback to begin when the player loads. YouTube notes that enabling autoplay causes playback data collection and sharing on page load.

3. Choose whether the playlist should repeat

For a full-playlist rotation, YouTube documents loop=1: the playlist plays through and then starts again. YouTube also cautions that loop support in IFrame embeds is limited. Because an OBS Browser source uses an embedded player, test the end-of-playlist transition in the exact scene and source configuration you plan to use. If looping does not work reliably there, do not assume the playlist will repeat unattended.

Configure OBS for launch by Task Scheduler

Use OBS launch options for the intended action

OBS supports --scene "name" to select a named scene at launch. Replace name with the exact scene name, keeping the quotation marks if the name contains spaces. OBS also supports --startstreaming, which tells OBS to begin streaming automatically. That flag starts a live stream; it is not just a playback command.

  • If you only want OBS and the player to open, use the scene option and omit --startstreaming.
  • If you want to broadcast the playlist, configure OBS’s stream profile and destination first, then include --startstreaming in the launch arguments.

Set the executable and working directory

In the scheduled task’s action, point to the OBS executable. OBS’s Windows launch guidance says the task’s working directory, often labelled “Start in,” should point to the folder containing obs64.exe. This matters for scheduled launches; do not leave the working directory unset when following OBS’s Windows instructions.

Windows Task Scheduler also requires a trigger and run conditions appropriate to your computer and account. The official OBS directions establish the executable working-directory requirement and OBS launch flags, but do not establish a universally correct Task Scheduler trigger, logon-state choice, or run-condition configuration. Those choices depend on your Windows setup. Confirm the current Task Scheduler options on your system rather than assuming that a task configured for one logon arrangement will work in another.

Test the complete schedule before relying on it

  1. Launch OBS manually using the same executable, working directory, and arguments configured in the task. Confirm the intended scene opens.
  2. Check that the Browser source loads the correct playlist and begins playback if autoplay is enabled.
  3. If broadcasting, verify the OBS stream profile and destination, then confirm that --startstreaming actually starts the intended live stream.
  4. Run the scheduled task during a time when you can observe the computer. Check whether OBS launches under the selected Windows account and whether the player behaves as expected.
  5. For a repeating playlist, leave the player running through the final item and confirm it returns to the beginning. A short test that ends before the playlist does not verify looping.

Common problems and fixes

  • OBS does not open from the task: Check that the action points to the OBS executable and that “Start in” is set to the folder containing obs64.exe, as OBS specifies for Windows scheduled launching.
  • The wrong scene opens: Check the spelling and quotation marks in --scene "name", and make sure the named scene exists in the OBS profile being used.
  • The playlist loads but does not start: Confirm the embed URL contains the intended playlist parameters and autoplay=1. Autoplay behavior should be tested in the OBS Browser source rather than inferred from a separate browser test.
  • The playlist plays once and stops: Check the loop parameter and test the end transition in the actual OBS source. YouTube documents limitations for loop support in IFrame embeds.
  • OBS opens but no YouTube live stream starts: Opening a scene or starting player playback is different from starting a broadcast. Confirm the stream profile is configured and that the launch arguments include --startstreaming only when streaming is intended.
  • The task behaves differently when no one is at the computer: The appropriate Task Scheduler logon and run-condition settings are not established by the OBS launch guidance cited here. Check the options applicable to your Windows account and test the exact unattended arrangement.

Copyright and channel considerations

Scheduling playback does not grant permission to rebroadcast the videos in a playlist. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and check the rights and platform requirements that apply to each item. A scheduled rotation also does not guarantee that YouTube will keep a live stream available or that a channel will qualify for any particular monetization outcome.
