To start a YouTube playlist at a set time on a Raspberry Pi, schedule a browser kiosk or use a digital-signage player with playlist scheduling. Set the Pi’s clock to India’s local time, test the exact playlist on the screen, and verify that playback continues as expected: a schedule starts content, but it cannot guarantee YouTube will play indefinitely without pausing or reaching the end of the playlist.

Choose how the Pi will start the playlist

Option Best for Check before relying on it
DIY Chromium kiosk A basic setup where the Pi opens a playlist page in a browser at the scheduled time. Raspberry Pi OS version and desktop session, Chromium’s executable name, autoplay behavior, browser recovery after a crash, and what happens when the playlist ends. Startup locations differ across Bookworm/labwc, earlier Bookworm/Wayfire, and Bullseye or X sessions; follow instructions for the installed release rather than copying a path blindly. DigitalSignage.com’s Raspberry Pi guide includes kiosk and systemd examples.
Digital-signage player A reader who wants a scheduling interface and player or screen-management controls. Confirm the exact Pi and player-version support, YouTube playback method, network requirements, and available restart or health features. PiSignage documents schedule templates with date ranges, time windows, selected days or dates, and multiweek cycles. PiSignage documentation also describes player-specific YouTube options.

A Raspberry Pi forum reply from 2019 proposed using cron to open a browser with a playlist URL. Treat that as an illustrative community suggestion, not current setup documentation; browser paths, desktop startup behavior, and YouTube playback can vary. Raspberry Pi Forums: “Youtube Playlists on the Raspberry Pi”

Set up and test the schedule

  1. Prepare the Pi and display. Install and update the operating system and the chosen browser or signage player, connect the display, and confirm the player can open the playlist manually. Use a suitable power supply and storage for your hardware; the sources cited here do not establish specific accessory models.
  2. Set the clock and time zone. Configure the Pi for India local time and check that its clock is synchronized. Enter the desired schedule in the player or operating-system scheduler. Because scheduling interfaces and time-zone handling vary, trigger a near-term test and compare the observed start with the time you set.
  3. Configure the schedule. In PiSignage, playlist schedule templates support start and end dates, a playback time window, selected days or dates, and multiweek cycles. Group settings separately describe daily screen on/off and reboot schedules. A reboot schedule is not a playlist schedule. Check the installed product’s interface and version for the exact controls. PiSignage documentation
  4. Open the intended playlist. Use the playlist page in a kiosk, or configure the signage player’s documented YouTube playback method. PiSignage says Chromium is the default player in version 4+ and describes MPV for certain YouTube streams; these are product-specific details, so verify the installed version and the stream you intend to play. PiSignage documentation
  5. Test the complete viewing context. Play the exact playlist on the Pi and display, not just on a phone or desktop. Check that every intended video is available, that audio and display orientation are right, and that the playlist advances and behaves sensibly at its end.
  6. Test unattended recovery. Restart the Pi, simulate a network interruption, and confirm that the scheduled player returns to the content. A DIY Chromium kiosk can use a process supervisor or systemd service to restart a crashed browser; that alone does not provide remote management, health reporting, or an offline cache. Account for YouTube playback limits

Scheduling and playback are separate problems. YouTube can interrupt unattended autoplay with a “Continue watching?” prompt: its help page says the prompt can appear after 60 minutes of uninterrupted watching on web and 180 minutes on TV. Test a run long enough to encounter the behavior relevant to your setup; a scheduled start is not proof of continuous playback. YouTube Help: “Why YouTube asks, ‘Continue watching?’”

If you use an embedded playlist, the owner can disable embedding, and age-restricted videos generally cannot be watched on third-party websites. Embedded playback also requires an HTTP Referer. YouTube’s autoplay instruction is to add &autoplay=1 after the video ID in the embed code; this starts an embedded video but does not guarantee that an entire playlist will run without interruption. Plan for internet loss and local playback

PiSignage describes an online-only playlist setting for YouTube videos and livestreams, so treat YouTube playback as dependent on the network connection at the display site. Check the connection and your ISP or mobile-data plan against the quality you plan to play; there is no reliable universal data-use or uptime figure for this setup.

YouTube’s India offline-download help covers downloads in the YouTube mobile app, not a supported way to cache a playlist for a Raspberry Pi signage player. Eligibility and Premium requirements vary; the page says downloads may be available for up to 48 hours before reconnecting is required, with different periods for some locations or content. For an offline fallback, use locally stored material only if you have the rights to store and display it, and confirm that your player can play it. YouTube Help: “Watch videos offline on mobile in select countries & regions – Android”

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The playlist does not start at the scheduled time: Check the Pi’s clock, time zone, schedule dates, selected days, and time window. Run a near-term test rather than assuming the scheduler uses the time zone you expect.
  • The browser opens but the video does not play: Test the playlist manually. Check whether the video is available, embedding is allowed if using an embed, and the browser or player can handle the stream. An age restriction or missing HTTP Referer can block embedded playback. YouTube Help: “Embed videos & playlists”
  • Playback stops during a long run: Look for YouTube’s “Continue watching?” prompt, a playlist end, or a network interruption. The web and TV prompt thresholds differ, so test in the actual playback context. YouTube Help: “Why YouTube asks, ‘Continue watching?’”
  • The schedule is correct but the screen turns off or Pi reboots: Review screen power and reboot rules separately from playlist scheduling. PiSignage documents these as group settings distinct from playlist time windows. PiSignage documentation
  • The kiosk stays down after a browser crash: Check that the process supervisor or systemd service matches the Pi OS release and browser command. Restarting a browser process does not itself add remote monitoring or offline playback. DigitalSignage.com’s Raspberry Pi guide

Or let it run in the cloud

For a different use case—keeping uploaded videos live as a 24/7 YouTube channel rather than scheduling a playlist to play on a Pi display—StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only, and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Visit StreamNeo or start your free first day.
