You can schedule a YouTube livestream playlist by scheduling two separate things: the event in YouTube Studio and the local encoder or player on your Windows PC. Task Scheduler can launch that software at a chosen time, but it does not play videos or guarantee that YouTube publishes the feed. The encoder must connect successfully, and YouTube’s stream settings must allow the stream to start automatically—or someone must click Go live after checking the preview.

How the scheduling workflow works

YouTube Studio manages the public livestream event and its watch page. Windows Task Scheduler starts an executable or script on your computer. A media player or encoder reads your playlist and sends audio and video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. All three parts must be configured for the stream to appear as intended.

  • YouTube event: Sets the event time, visibility, metadata, and viewer-facing watch page.
  • Local playback and encoding: Reads the playlist and sends the stream to YouTube.
  • Windows task: Starts the selected program or script at the time you specify.

Scheduling the Windows task alone does not schedule or publish a YouTube event. The PC must be on and available, the local files and network must work, and the YouTube stream must be set up for manual or automatic start.

1. Schedule the livestream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room.
  2. Under Manage, create a new stream or reuse an existing setup. Set the title, description, intended privacy, and scheduled date and time.
  3. Save the event and note its watch page or event details so you can verify the correct broadcast later. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, and viewers may be able to opt in to notifications.
  4. Locate the stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or put it somewhere publicly accessible. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the encoder with the replacement before the next run.

YouTube’s encoder setup and livestream scheduling guide and live stream settings guide describe the available workflow and settings. Labels and options can vary with the stream configuration.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

2. Configure a player or encoder to send the playlist

Task Scheduler does not handle playlist playback or streaming. Choose a media player or encoder that can read your playlist format, output the required audio and video, connect to YouTube using its stream URL and key, and support the startup behavior you need.

Follow that program’s own documentation for the playlist syntax, looping behavior, command-line arguments, reconnect behavior, and unattended operation. The YouTube setup guides establish the need for an encoder and stream credentials; they do not prescribe a particular application or command.

  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
  • Use stable media paths that will still resolve when the scheduled task runs. A mapped drive or a file available only in your interactive session may not be available to a task running under another account or session.
  • Confirm the playlist plays the intended files in the intended order, with audio and video present.
  • Set the output to the stream URL and key associated with the scheduled YouTube event.
  • Check whether the encoder can reconnect if the connection drops and whether it exposes a preview or stream-health status.
  • Confirm that the selected YouTube stream is configured for the start behavior you intend; do not assume that launching an encoder automatically makes the event public.

3. Create the Windows Task Scheduler task

Windows Task Scheduler can start a program or script on a time-based trigger. Microsoft documents task creation with schtasks /create, including schedule types and the /tr field for the program or command to run. See the Microsoft schtasks /create reference and Microsoft’s Task Scheduler triggers documentation.

  1. Open Start, search for Task Scheduler, and open it.
  2. Choose Create Basic Task… for a straightforward schedule, or Create Task… if you need more control over the account, conditions, or task behavior.
  3. Enter a name that identifies the stream task, then add a time-based trigger for the event’s date and time. Choose a recurrence only if you want the same task to run repeatedly.
  4. For the action, select Start a program. Browse to the full executable path for the player or encoder, or to a script or batch file that launches it.
  5. Enter only arguments documented for the selected program. If the program expects a working directory, set it in the task’s Start in (optional) field or handle it in the wrapper script. Quote paths containing spaces wherever the program’s syntax requires it.
  6. Review the task’s account and conditions. Configure it to run in the intended account and session, and ensure power or idle conditions will not prevent it from starting when needed.
  7. Save the task, then use its run or history information during an end-to-end test. Verify that the application starts and can access the playlist and credentials in the task’s actual run context.

There is no universal command line to paste here: arguments and playlist formats are encoder-specific. Verify them in the selected program’s current official documentation rather than assuming that Task Scheduler has built-in media or YouTube streaming commands.

4. Choose manual or automatic YouTube start

In YouTube’s manual encoder flow, the operator waits for the encoder preview and selects Go live. That means an unattended Windows task can start the encoder yet leave the YouTube event waiting in preview. YouTube also provides auto-start and auto-stop settings for streams; whether the broadcast starts without an operator depends on the selected stream’s configuration and a tested encoder setup.

Start method What happens What to verify
Manual Go live The encoder connects and YouTube shows a preview; an operator checks it and starts the event. Someone can access the Live Control Room at the scheduled time and select Go live after confirming the preview.
Configured auto-start The stream may start without that manual click when the relevant YouTube setting and encoder behavior are configured correctly. Test the exact event and encoder configuration. Do not treat Task Scheduler launching the program as proof that YouTube will publish it.

5. Test the complete setup before relying on it

YouTube Help recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before a livestream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Its guidance also recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations; the cited Help pages do not state a publication year. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The task never starts The PC is off or asleep, the trigger is wrong, or a task condition blocks execution. Confirm the trigger’s date, time, and recurrence; review task history and conditions; and make sure the computer is available at the scheduled time.
The encoder opens but the playlist is missing The task runs under a different account or working directory, or the media path is unavailable. Use a stable path, set the working directory if needed, and test access under the task’s configured account.
YouTube does not receive the feed The encoder cannot connect, its URL or key is wrong, or the network cannot sustain the upload. Check the event’s stream details, update a reset key in the encoder, confirm connectivity, and review YouTube’s stream-health information.
The preview appears, but the event is not live The stream is waiting for a manual Go live action, or auto-start is not configured as expected. Check the YouTube stream settings and use an end-to-end test to establish whether an operator must start the event.
The stream interrupts or loses quality Local connectivity or available upload bandwidth is insufficient or unstable. Check the connection and YouTube’s stream-health guidance; leave the recommended upload headroom. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.

Copyright, reused content, and playlist rights

Before scheduling a playlist, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed to livestream every video and its audio. A playlist being available to play does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s encoder and streaming guidance does not determine whether a particular playlist complies with copyright rules or monetization policies; assess the content and applicable YouTube policies separately. Do not rely on automation to resolve a rights or policy issue.
