You can schedule the livestream in YouTube Studio, but YouTube does not provide a setting that automatically switches to a backup playlist when a media file is missing. Schedule the event in Live Control Room, configure fallback content in your encoder or automation software, and rehearse with a file deliberately made unavailable. Test encoder or network failover separately: it protects the incoming stream feed, not the content playlist.
Schedule the livestream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Manage and choose Schedule stream.
- Choose whether to reuse settings or create a new stream. Enter the title, description, visibility, and other event details, then save the scheduled stream. A scheduled stream may appear to subscribers as an upcoming event, and they can opt into a reminder. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder you will use. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube says it tells the encoder where to send its feed, so do not share it publicly.
- Start the encoder and wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room. Check the picture and sound, then click Go live when you are ready.
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are preparation intervals in YouTube’s live-streaming tips, not guarantees that every issue will be resolved in that time.
Configure what happens when a playlist file is missing
Set up missing-content handling in the encoder or a compatible automation layer—not in YouTube’s scheduling settings. The exact behavior depends on the software and configuration. The reviewed official documentation does not establish a universal rule that automatically skips an absent file and starts a designated backup playlist.
- Identify the primary media item and the fallback clip, scene, or playlist you want viewers to see.
- Confirm that every referenced file exists and that the streaming computer or server can access its path. A file visible on your desktop may not be accessible to a service or process running under a different account or environment.
- Configure your chosen encoder or automation to use the fallback. Do not assume that adding another item to a playlist creates conditional switching; check the software’s documentation for the specific behavior you need.
- Rehearse the failure: use a test copy of the media and remove it, rename it, or otherwise make it unavailable. Verify what the stream actually shows and plays, and adjust the configuration if necessary.
Test the cases that could occur during your event, including a missing file, a file that cannot be read, and a file moved from its configured path. If the behavior depends on a plugin or automation script, record its version alongside the operating system, encoder version, source type, and media paths. Validate the complete setup again after changing any of these.

What OBS can—and cannot—do here
OBS documents two relevant source types. Media Source plays an individual media file. VLC Video can play video and other media in a playlist and offers loop and shuffle controls. OBS says VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide and OBS Sources guide.
Those documented playlist features do not promise that OBS will detect a missing entry and switch to a chosen backup playlist. If you need that conditional behavior, configure it through a fallback method you have verified on your own setup, then test with the file unavailable. Do not treat loop or shuffle as a missing-file recovery rule.

Content fallback is different from encoder failover

YouTube’s preparation guide recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. That test verifies ingestion failover, not missing-file substitution. YouTube’s HLS guidance also describes a Backup server URL for backup ingestion; it is not a backup-playlist selector.
Before the event and at airtime
- Rehearse missing-content fallback by making a test file unavailable and checking the actual stream output.
- If you use a backup encoder or backup ingestion path, test that separately. YouTube’s failover test checks whether the player changes feeds.
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the event and start it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, as YouTube advises.
- At airtime, confirm the Live Control Room preview, click Go live, and monitor picture and sound.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder.
Troubleshoot missing media and fallback
- The playlist does not start: Check that the file path is valid in the environment running the encoder and that the file is accessible there.
- The stream goes blank or stops on a missing item: The configured playlist may not include a verified conditional fallback. Test the encoder or automation’s behavior with an unavailable file and configure an alternative rather than assuming it will skip automatically.
- VLC Video is unavailable in OBS: Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The preview does not appear: Check that the encoder is sending to the scheduled stream’s URL and key, then inspect Live Control Room again. Keep the key private.
- The backup encoder does not take over: Recheck its configuration and repeat YouTube’s failover test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet. Confirm the player changes feeds.
- The backup feed appears but has the same content problem: That is consistent with encoder failover protecting the feed rather than replacing missing media. Configure and test content fallback separately.
