To schedule a prison visit, first confirm the person’s current facility, then follow that facility’s visitor-approval and booking process. There is no single U.S. scheduling portal, appointment window, or set of visitor rules. Check the official facility instructions and reconfirm the appointment, hours, and entry requirements before you travel.

1. Confirm where the person is currently housed

Start with the corrections agency’s official location information or details provided directly by the person. Transfers can make an older address or booking plan incorrect. The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) specifically advises visitors to confirm the person’s current location before planning a visit: BOP visiting guidance.

Once you have the current facility, use its official visitation page. A search result, old printout, or general guide may not reflect that institution’s present schedule or rules.

2. Find out whether you need approval before booking

Being a relative or friend does not automatically make someone eligible to visit. In the federal system, the incarcerated person adds prospective visitors to a visiting list, and visitors must be cleared. California and Michigan also require approval before visitors can schedule at institutions.

  • Federal BOP: Check the BOP’s visitor instructions and the specific institution’s rules for how approval works.
  • California: The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) says only approved visitors may schedule. Its visitor information explains how to use the Visitation Scheduling Application (VSA).
  • Michigan: The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) requires a visitor application to be approved before scheduling. Its visitation page says application processing may take up to four weeks; check the live instructions for current details.

Follow the specific application directions, including who must submit the form and where it should be sent. Do not book until you know whether approval is required and, if so, that it has been granted.

3. Book through the facility’s specified channel

There is no nationwide booking system or universal lead time. Use the portal, phone number, or other method named by the relevant agency or facility, and follow its stated appointment window. For example, California directs approved visitors to its VSA and describes institution-specific request periods; Illinois directs visitors to online scheduling after approval is confirmed.

Wait for confirmation from the facility’s process; submitting a request alone may not mean the visit is booked. Check the time zone shown by the scheduler, too. Indiana’s visitor information says its ViaPath scheduling system uses Eastern Time even for facilities in Central Time locations. See the Indiana DOC visitation page for its instructions.

4. Reconfirm the visit and current rules before traveling

Schedules and entry conditions can change. Rhode Island DOC says facility schedules differ, advises visitors to verify requirements and schedules before each visit, and reserves the right to amend or cancel visits. The BOP also advises checking the institution’s regulations and contacting the prison with questions.

Shortly before departure, verify the appointment status, date, start time, arrival instructions, and any temporary facility notice. Rhode Island’s visiting information and the BOP’s guidance explain why checking directly with the facility matters.

5. Prepare for check-in using that facility’s rules

Review the facility’s instructions for identification, clothing, screening, permitted belongings, and how early to arrive. Requirements vary. For example, Illinois asks adult visitors to bring two forms of identification, one of which must be a state-issued photo ID; that rule should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. See the Illinois DOC rules. The BOP provides general dress guidance but points visitors to local policy for detailed requirements.

If the official page does not answer a practical question—such as whether a specific ID is accepted or what items may be brought—contact the facility before setting out. Its local instructions, rather than another state’s checklist, control what to expect at check-in.

What the federal minimum does—and does not—mean

The BOP’s general visiting page states that federal inmates must receive at least four hours of visiting time per month. It also says a warden may restrict visit length or the number of visitors to manage overcrowding. This is a federal-system minimum, not a guarantee that a particular visitor can get a specific appointment, and it does not establish rules for state prisons. Check the BOP page and the institution’s local rules for the applicable details.
