Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe correct way to save a screenshot depends on your laptop: Windows uses Snipping Tool, macOS uses Screenshot, and ChromeOS uses Screen Capture. Capture the whole screen, a window, or a selected area, then confirm that the image was saved as a file—not merely copied to a clipboard or opened for editing.
First identify what “saved” means
A screenshot can exist in three different states:
- Captured: the operating system has created the image.
- Copied: the image is available for pasting with Ctrl+V or Command-V.
- Saved: an image file has been written to a folder with a name and format such as PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
These states are not always simultaneous. Windows may open a snip in Snipping Tool before you choose a filename. ChromeOS copies captures to the clipboard and provides post-capture actions. macOS lets you choose a destination in its Screenshot controls. If you need a file you can find later, complete the platform-specific save step below.
Windows laptop: capture with Snipping Tool and save the file
Capture the whole screen, a window, or an area
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose a capture mode from the toolbar: rectangular selection, freeform selection, window, or full screen, when those controls are available on your Windows and Snipping Tool version.
- Drag over the area, select a window, or allow the full-screen capture to complete.
- Open the notification or Snipping Tool window that appears. Microsoft says the snip is automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window, where it can be edited, saved, and shared.
A capture appearing in Snipping Tool or on the clipboard is not proof that a file has been saved. In Snipping Tool, select the Save control, choose a folder and filename, and confirm the file type if prompted. The exact interface can vary with Windows and Snipping Tool versions or settings. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
If your keyboard has no PrtScn key
Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a screenshot option on devices without a PrtScn button. Compact laptop and external-keyboard layouts vary, so look for a key labeled Screenshot, PrtSc, or a camera icon as well. The Snipping Tool workflow above remains the clearest way to select and save a specific region.

Where Windows puts the file
There is no single location you should assume for every Windows setup. Use Snipping Tool’s Save control and note the folder shown in the dialog. If you only copied the image, paste it into an image editor, document, or File Explorer-supported destination and save it as a file.
Mac laptop: use Screenshot controls to choose a destination
Save a full-screen screenshot quickly
- Press Shift-Command-3.
- macOS creates a full-screen screenshot. Depending on your settings, a thumbnail may briefly appear; use it if you want to mark up or manage the capture.
- Open the resulting image from the configured destination, or use the Screenshot controls to change that destination for future captures.
Choose full screen, window, or selection and set “Save to”
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls.
- Choose capture full screen, capture a window, or capture a selected portion.
- Open Options and use Save to to select one of the preset locations or another folder.
- Capture the screen. macOS writes the image to the destination you selected.
Apple’s current instructions are documented at Take a screenshot on Mac. Setting a known folder before a batch of captures makes later retrieval easier.
Copy a Mac screenshot instead of saving it directly
Hold Control while using a screenshot shortcut, or Control-click the screenshot thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard when that option is shown. You can then paste the image into another app. Pasting does not create a standalone image file until you save it from that app.
When a Mac screenshot is blocked
Apple notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows. If a window capture is blank or unavailable, the restriction may belong to the app rather than your Mac’s shortcut.

Chromebook: capture with Screen Capture and review the result
Open the capture controls
- Press the dedicated Screenshot key if your Chromebook keyboard has one.
- Otherwise press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key normally looks like a rectangle with two vertical lines.
- You can also open Settings > Screen Capture.
- Choose full-screen, partial-area, or window capture, then complete the selection.
Google says ChromeOS automatically copies screenshots to the clipboard and lets you review, delete, or share them after capture. The cited help page does not establish one universal default file folder for every Chromebook configuration, so check the post-capture preview and the Files app on your device rather than assuming a Windows- or Mac-style location. Instructions are at Google Chromebook Help.
External keyboard without Show windows
Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 for an external keyboard that does not have a Show windows key. If that combination does not match your hardware, use Settings > Screen Capture or the dedicated Screenshot key.
Windows, Mac, and Chromebook compared
| Platform | Main shortcut | Capture choices | How saving works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows + Shift + S | Area, window, full screen, and other Snipping Tool modes | Capture opens in Snipping Tool; use Save and choose a filename and folder. |
| Mac | Shift-Command-3 or Shift-Command-5 | Full screen, window, or selected portion | Screenshot controls provide an Options > Save to destination; Control can copy to clipboard. |
| Chromebook | Screenshot key or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows | Full screen, partial, or window | Capture is automatically copied to the clipboard and can be reviewed or shared; a single universal default folder is not established by the cited guidance. |
How to find a screenshot that seems to be missing
Check whether it was only copied
Open an app that accepts images and press Ctrl+V on Windows or Chromebook, or Command-V on Mac. If the image appears, it was captured and copied but may not yet be a file. Save it from that app or repeat the platform’s explicit Save step.
Check the tool that handled the capture
- Windows: return to the Snipping Tool notification or window and use Save.
- Mac: press Shift-Command-5, inspect Options > Save to, and look in that folder.
- Chromebook: use the capture preview and then inspect the Files app; do not infer a folder from another operating system.
Check the keyboard and layout
On compact laptops, function keys may require Fn, and external keyboards may omit platform-specific keys. Try the alternate shortcut listed for your platform, then use the graphical capture controls if the key combination still does not work.

Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
Nothing happens when I press the shortcut
Confirm that you are using the shortcut for the operating system actually running on the laptop. Try Fn on a compact keyboard, look for a dedicated Screenshot or PrtScn key, and open the graphical capture interface through Snipping Tool, Screenshot controls, or Settings > Screen Capture.
The screenshot appears, but I cannot find a file
It may only be in a clipboard or capture window. Windows requires the Snipping Tool Save action; Mac requires a destination chosen under Save to or a save action from the app receiving the paste; ChromeOS may show the capture in its review flow while copying it automatically.
The captured area is wrong
Repeat the capture and choose the partial-area or window mode before selecting. For a moving menu or tooltip, position the pointer first, then invoke the capture controls and select the target deliberately.
A protected video window is blank
Some applications prevent screenshots. Apple specifically notes that some apps, such as Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows. Respect the application’s restrictions rather than treating the blank result as a keyboard failure.

If what you need is a screenshot of a web page rather than your laptop’s entire desktop, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One GET request is enough. The parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete option set.
