Short answer: If your save began in The Witch’s Bakery demo on Steam, do not use the visible Continue entry after installing the October 14, 2026 release. In its official Steam announcement dated October 14, 2026, Sunny Lab says the demo and release saves are incompatible and instructs players to select Steam’s Default Public Version, then start a new game. Continuing the old save can leave the game stuck. This creates a compatible full-game save, but it does not transfer or restore the demo’s recipes.
On Nintendo Switch, Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud support, which requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Switch 2 owners should check compatibility first: Nintendo’s listing says the game is “Unsupported – Problems with game progression have been found,” with an update dated March 31, 2026. For a full-release save that was overwritten or corrupted, no official general restore procedure has been documented; preserve any remaining data and contact Sunny Lab through its official support channels.
What to do first
Use the path that matches where the missing recipes came from. A demo-to-release mismatch is a known, specific problem; it is not proof that every missing recipe is caused by the same bug.

How saving works in the released game
The official notices available for this release do not publish a universal manual-save command, a recipe-file location, or a recipe-by-recipe restore menu. That means you should follow the save or quit prompts shown by your current game build rather than assume that a particular keyboard shortcut, menu item, or autosave interval exists.

Use the game’s own save and quit prompts
- When you reach a point at which the game presents a save, sleep, day-end, area-change, or quit confirmation, complete that prompt instead of closing the application abruptly.
- Wait until the game has finished its transition before suspending the console, closing the Steam client, or powering down the device.
- When returning, load the newest entry shown by the game. Do not select an old demo entry simply because it is the only item labelled Continue.
- If the game offers more than one slot, keep a separate slot for an established run before experimenting with a different branch or platform transfer.
These are safe handling practices, not a claim that the game has a particular autosave design. The important documented distinction is the origin of the save: demo data and release data are incompatible.
Why a recipe can appear to vanish
Recipes are part of the progression represented by a save. If the game loads an incompatible, older, or different-platform entry, the recipe list can look incomplete even though the recipe was previously unlocked in another run. A missing recipe therefore does not by itself establish that the underlying full-release save has been permanently erased.
Steam: fix the demo-to-release incompatibility
Sunny Lab’s official Steam announcement is explicit about the launch issue. Its wording is: “you must start a new game, since saves are incompatible and the game will get stuck at some point if you continue with your old save.” The instruction applies to a save made in the demo that is being presented by the released game.

Step 1: close the game
Exit The Witch’s Bakery normally and make sure it is no longer running before changing its Steam branch. Do not repeatedly test the incompatible Continue entry while troubleshooting; each attempt can make it harder to identify which save you are examining.
Step 2: select Default Public Version in Steam
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click The Witch’s Bakery and choose Properties.
- Open the Betas section.
- In the branch or beta-selection control, choose Default Public Version.
- Close the properties window and wait for Steam to finish any update or file change it indicates.
The exact appearance of Steam’s properties window can vary with the client version, but the required selection is the branch named Default Public Version, not a demo branch or an experimental branch.
Step 3: start a new full-game save
- Launch the released game after Steam has returned to the default public branch.
- Choose New Game, not Continue, when the title screen appears.
- Play until the game has created the first compatible release save, then exit through the game’s normal quit flow.
- Launch it again and confirm that the new full-game entry loads before investing more time in recipe progression.
This is a replacement path, not a conversion. The demo’s unlocked recipes and other progress are not copied into the new release save. Starting over is frustrating, but it is the developer’s documented fix for this particular mismatch.

If Continue still appears after you followed the steps
A visible Continue label does not prove that its data is compatible. Confirm all of the following:

- You launched the release installation rather than a separately installed demo entry.
- You selected New Game at least once after changing branches.
- You allowed Steam to complete any pending update before launching.
If the new game itself becomes stuck, stop deleting files or experimenting with branches. Record the Steam branch, operating-system version, point at which the game stops, and whether the save began in the demo, then send those details to Sunny Lab’s official support.
Can a Steam demo save be recovered?
Not into the released game, according to the developer’s notice. The problem is incompatibility, not a missing button that converts the old file. The documented action is to create a new release save. Treat any apparent demo progress shown under Continue as unsafe to resume.

What “recover” means in this case
- Recover the recipes: No. The official fix does not transfer the demo’s recipe unlocks.
- Recover a playable release save: Yes, by starting a new game on the default public release branch.
- Keep the demo for reference: You may leave its data untouched while asking support for guidance, but do not present it to the released game as a valid save.
Do not use third-party save editors as though they were an official remedy. The available documentation does not establish that editing a demo file can make it safe for the release, and an altered file could remove evidence that support needs.
Nintendo Switch: protect and check cloud backups
Nintendo’s listing for the Switch edition includes Save Data Cloud support and states that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for that backup feature. Cloud backup is a way to preserve a compatible Switch save; it is not a method for importing a Steam demo save.
Enable and verify the backup
- On the Switch, open the console’s System Settings and go to the save-data or cloud-backup area.
- Select The Witch’s Bakery from the software list.
- Confirm that the Nintendo Account used on the console has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Turn on automatic backup if it is offered, and check the displayed backup date and time.
- After a substantial play session, return to the same screen and verify that the backup timestamp has advanced.
Menu wording can change with system software, so use the labels displayed by your console. A backup that was never completed cannot restore a later session, and a cloud copy may be older than the point at which a recipe was unlocked.

Before downloading a cloud copy
Downloading an older cloud save can replace the newer local save. First inspect the dates shown for the local and cloud entries. If the local save contains newer progress, do not overwrite it casually; contact Nintendo support for account or cloud-service questions and Sunny Lab for game-specific progression problems.

Nintendo’s listing carries the label Unsupported – Problems with game progression have been found for Switch 2 compatibility. The listing shows an update dated March 31, 2026. This warning matters because a progression failure on Switch 2 may be a platform-compatibility issue rather than a damaged save.
Check the platform before troubleshooting
- Identify whether the game is running on an original Nintendo Switch or a Switch 2.
- Check the current Nintendo listing and system software before deleting local data.
- Note whether the problem began after moving the software or save between consoles.
- Include the console model and game version in any support request.
Do not assume that a cloud download will cure a compatibility problem. It can restore data to the same unsupported environment without changing the underlying progression behavior.
When a full-release save is missing or corrupted
The demo mismatch is the only specific save-loss scenario covered by the developer notice. No official general-purpose restore workflow for an overwritten or corrupted full-game save has been documented in the available materials.

- On Steam, note whether the entry came from the demo or full release and which branch is selected.
- Capture the exact on-screen error, the point in the story or day cycle where it occurs, and the recipes that are missing.
Contact the developer with actionable details
Use Sunny Lab’s official support channels for a full-release save that remains broken after the platform checks above. Include your platform, game version, whether the save originated in the demo, the Steam branch or Switch model, the approximate time the issue began, and the steps that reproduce it. Do not send altered save files or claim that a third-party editor is an approved recovery method.
