Use the video service’s own offline control or a publisher-provided file with explicit terms. On YouTube, sign in to an eligible YouTube Premium account, open the official trailer, choose Download, and watch it later from YouTube’s Downloads area. That download is an account-bound playback license, not an MP4 you can copy to a USB drive. A publisher’s media or press portal may provide a retainable file, but you must follow the permission for that specific game, territory, and use.
The legally safe options at a glance
There are two straightforward ways to prepare a game trailer for a flight, commute, or unreliable connection:
- Use YouTube’s built-in Download feature. This is the normal route when the trailer is on an official channel and offline viewing is available for your account, device, browser, country, and that video.
- Use a file supplied by the publisher or rights holder. A press kit, media portal, or other official download may grant rights to retain or reuse the file. Read the terms attached to that exact asset before copying or sharing it.
A third-party downloader, browser extension, stream-ripping service, or screen recorder does not create permission. It may produce a video file, but the tool cannot override copyright or the platform’s terms. For private offline viewing, start with the platform’s authorized feature; for an ordinary file, obtain it directly from the rights holder with written terms.

How YouTube offline downloads work
YouTube’s offline feature stores an encrypted or otherwise controlled copy for playback inside supported YouTube software. The result is linked to the signed-in account and the service’s eligibility checks. It is not a general-purpose video file that you can open in a different player, edit, burn to a disc, or drag to a USB stick.

YouTube states that a person signed in with a YouTube Premium account on mobile can watch videos previously downloaded. Availability is not identical everywhere: the account’s country, the device or browser, the video’s rights status, and current YouTube support all matter. A trailer that offers Download on one device may not offer it on another.
Offline time limits and reconnection
YouTube requires periodic internet checks so it can confirm that the account and video are still eligible. The documented offline period can be 48 hours in some regional cases or up to 29 days for many Premium downloads. The exact window depends on location and content, so treat those figures as examples of YouTube’s documented rules rather than a universal promise.
When the app asks for a check, connect the device to the internet and open YouTube while signed in to the same account. If the trailer is removed, its rights change, or it loses offline eligibility, synchronization can remove the stored download. A download therefore is useful for a trip, not a permanent archive.
Step-by-step: download an official trailer in YouTube
- Confirm the source. Open the trailer on the official publisher, platform, or developer channel. Check the channel name and video description; similarly titled reuploads may have different rights and may disappear without notice.
- Sign in. Use the YouTube account that has YouTube Premium in a country where the service and offline feature are available. If Premium is not offered to your account or the video is excluded, the Download control may not appear.
- Open the watch page. Use the regular YouTube app or a supported browser, then load the trailer’s own watch page rather than relying on a third-party embed.
- Choose Download. Tap or click Download beneath the video. Select a quality if YouTube presents quality choices; higher quality uses more device storage.
- Verify the download. Open YouTube’s You tab or Library, then open Downloads. Start the trailer there while still connected so you know the download completed.
- Prepare for travel. Before leaving coverage, open Downloads and play the trailer once. Keep the YouTube app installed, remain signed in, and avoid clearing its data or signing out, which can remove the local license.
- Reconnect when prompted. During the trip, connect periodically if YouTube requests an eligibility check. If the video is no longer available or the account no longer qualifies, YouTube may delete the offline copy during synchronization.

Why generic YouTube downloaders are not a legal shortcut
YouTube’s Terms prohibit users from accessing, reproducing, downloading, distributing, transmitting, broadcasting, displaying, selling, licensing, altering, modifying, or otherwise using the service or its content except where YouTube expressly authorizes it or where YouTube and the applicable rights holders have given prior written permission. The built-in Download control is an express authorization for the limited offline playback it provides; a separate ripping tool is not the same authorization.

YouTube’s API policy also bars clients from downloading, caching, storing copies, or enabling offline playback without prior written approval. This is why an app or website that turns a watch page into an MP4 should not be presented as the legal method for saving a trailer.
- The software does not grant copyright. A downloader can change the format or location of a copy, but it cannot grant permission to reproduce the trailer.
- “It is only for personal use” is not a universal exception. Personal purpose may matter under a particular country’s law, but it does not automatically override YouTube’s contractual terms or the rights holder’s restrictions.
- Screen capture has the same problem. Recording playback creates another copy. Unless a license, permission, or applicable copyright exception covers that use, it is not a safer default than downloading.
- Malware and account risk are practical concerns. Unofficial sites and extensions can expose accounts to phishing, aggressive advertising, bundled software, or files that are not the trailer you expected.
If you need a normal file, ask the publisher or rights holder for one and keep the permission with the file. Do not infer permission merely because a trailer is publicly viewable.
Getting a publisher-provided trailer file
Publishers sometimes place trailers in press portals, media kits, newsroom pages, or title-specific asset libraries. A direct download from an official portal is different from ripping a stream, but the file’s license still controls what you may do with it.

- Read the current policy before downloading. Look for language covering personal viewing, reposting, editing, public performance, monetization, territory, attribution, embargoes, and expiration.
- Save the terms with the asset. Keep a PDF, screenshot, or archived copy of the permission page and note the date. A file can outlive a portal’s wording, so preserving the terms helps you prove what permission you relied on.
- Download only from the official domain. Check that the URL, page branding, and file description correspond to the publisher or an authorized public-relations provider.
- Match the use to the permission. A license for private viewing does not automatically cover a public screening, a reaction video, a review excerpt, a commercial advertisement, or a re-upload.
Examples of why policies differ
Publisher rules are not interchangeable. Nintendo’s guidelines describe coverage for game content generated after official release and promotional materials officially released by Nintendo, while placing responsibility for third-party rights on the user and stating that Nintendo does not provide legal advice. A guideline for one title or one publisher should not be treated as a blanket license for another company’s assets.

A cited Square Enix guideline for HARVESTELLA permits specified sharing but says materials may not be used outside the stated permissions. It also prohibits posting movie scenes or cutscenes as standalone content under that policy. That illustrates why “officially released” and “free to reuse” are not synonyms.
Ubisoft’s Video Policy 2.0 says its policy does not authorize simple duplication of official trailers, television advertisements, and non-dynamic in-game footage, and that such material may be removed. Even when a publisher hosts a video, the policy may restrict copying or redistribution.
These examples show policy variation, not a universal industry rule. Check the exact game, publisher, country, and intended use each time.

The purpose of the copy changes the legal analysis. Watching an authorized YouTube download privately on your phone is a narrower activity than distributing the trailer to other people.

Can you save a trailer to a USB drive?
Not from a standard YouTube Premium download. YouTube’s offline copy remains inside the supported app or browser profile, so a USB drive cannot be used as a portable YouTube library. Copying application data, changing file extensions, or moving cached folders does not turn the download into an authorized MP4 and can break playback.
A USB drive is appropriate only when you have an ordinary file supplied under terms that allow you to retain and copy it. For example, a publisher might provide a downloadable trailer in a press portal and specify that journalists may store it locally. In that situation, copy the file according to those terms and keep the permission record. If the page offers only a streaming player, do not assume that a hidden media URL or browser cache is an authorized download.
Preparing a phone, tablet, or laptop for a flight
- Use the same account throughout. Download and later playback must occur in the account that is authorized for the offline feature.
- Leave enough storage. Higher-resolution downloads consume more space. Remove finished downloads from YouTube’s Downloads screen rather than deleting random application files.
- Test in airplane mode. After the download finishes, enable airplane mode briefly and start the trailer from Downloads. Restore connectivity afterward so YouTube can perform any required check before travel.
- Keep the app and operating system supported. Offline playback depends on YouTube’s supported devices and browsers. An old app, restricted work profile, or unsupported browser can hide the control or prevent playback.
- Plan for the offline window. If the trip extends beyond the applicable 48-hour or 29-day period, reconnect before the deadline. These are documented examples, not a guarantee for every country or video.
- Do not sign out or clear app data. Either action can remove the local playback authorization and require a fresh download.
Troubleshooting when Download is missing or playback fails
The Download button is not visible
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account with YouTube Premium, where Premium is required or available.
- Open the official watch page in the supported YouTube app or browser rather than an embedded player.
- Check whether the country, device, browser, or specific video supports offline playback.
- Try the publisher’s official media portal if the trailer is offered there as a downloadable asset.
The download completed but will not play offline
- Open the trailer from YouTube’s Downloads area, not from a copied file manager location.
- Reconnect and let YouTube verify the account and video. The offline window may have expired.
- Check that you are still signed in to the same Premium account and that the app has not been reset or its data cleared.
- If the trailer was removed, made private, or lost offline eligibility, download it again only if YouTube offers the control. An old cached copy is not a permanent entitlement.
The publisher file has unclear terms
Do not publish, edit, or distribute it until the rights holder clarifies the permission. You can retain the official page and ask the publisher’s media contact a specific question: what territories, audiences, platforms, duration, edits, and commercial uses are allowed? If no permission can be established, use the official watch-page link for others and reserve the downloaded file for a use clearly covered by the terms.
Copyright basics for game trailers
An original video is normally protected by copyright automatically. The rights holder controls copying and distribution, which can include the trailer’s footage, music, voice performances, logos, artwork, and any licensed material inside it. A public upload does not place the work in the public domain.

Potential lawful bases can include permission from the rights holder, a valid copyright exception under the law that applies to your use, public-domain status, or a license such as Creative Commons. None guarantees that a platform will avoid an automated claim, takedown, or dispute; keep evidence of the permission or legal basis and follow the license conditions.
For a simple offline viewing request, the lowest-risk decision is therefore narrow: use YouTube’s own Download function, or use a publisher-provided file only within its written license. More ambitious uses—reposting, editing, public screening, and monetization—need a separate rights analysis.
A practical decision checklist
- Where is the trailer hosted? Official YouTube channel, official publisher portal, or an unrelated account?
- What kind of copy do you need? Temporary in-app playback, or an ordinary file that must remain on a drive?
- What does the authorization say? YouTube Download control, publisher terms, written permission, or no clear permission?
- How will you use it? Private viewing, sharing, editing, public performance, or monetized publication?
- What can invalidate the plan? Region restrictions, account changes, offline deadlines, a removed video, an expired license, or third-party music and footage?
If the answers point to YouTube’s Download control and private viewing, stay inside YouTube and plan a reconnection. If they point to a publisher file, keep the terms and follow them exactly. If there is no clear authorization, do not use a downloader as a substitute for permission.
