Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can document image-based abuse without downloading or forwarding the intimate image. Start by recording non-explicit details—where it appeared, when you saw it, the account or URL involved, any threats, and the report numbers—and get local specialist guidance before capturing an image that may depict someone under 18 or otherwise be illegal. If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first.
What to record without copying the image
Write a short, factual timeline while details are fresh. Include when you learned about the material, where it appeared, the service or page, relevant account names or identifiers, and any threats, payment demands, or other contact. Note what you have already reported and when. Stick to what you observed rather than guessing who was responsible or why.
Save non-explicit records where safe: the page or message URL, profile details, dates and times, threatening messages, and acknowledgements or case numbers from reports. If a conversation is relevant, retain the surrounding exchange when appropriate rather than only an isolated line. Do not send the intimate image to friends, helpers, or support services as a way to explain what happened.
Should you take a screenshot?
A screenshot can show the post and the account or profile connected to it, but first consider whether capturing it is safe and lawful. eSafety Commissioner guidance recommends retaining relevant context and avoiding edits to the record. For non-explicit material, include enough of the screen to show the source, account, date or time, and conversation where possible. Do not crop or annotate the only copy of a screenshot.

- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
Some apps notify users about screenshots, recordings, or downloads. For non-explicit evidence, eSafety says photographing the screen with a separate device may be an option if an in-app capture could alert someone. Weigh that against your safety, and do not use this workaround to duplicate explicit material that may be illegal or restricted. See eSafety’s guide to collecting evidence.
If the image may show someone under 18
Do not save, screenshot, photograph, download, print, forward, or otherwise copy a sexual image or video of anyone under 18. Keep non-explicit details such as the URL, account identifiers, dates, threats, and report acknowledgements, then ask the appropriate local child-protection or law-enforcement authority, regulator, or specialist service how to proceed. Laws and procedures vary by location.

eSafety’s Australian quick guide warns not to save or share sexual images or videos of anyone under 18 or other illegal content. Its July 2025 response guide gives education-sector staff the more specific instruction not to photograph, screenshot, copy, print, or send an intimate image, leaving image handling to police if involved. That staff guidance is specific to educational settings; the broader safety point is not to make another copy when the image may be illegal or a minor may be depicted.
Report the content and keep the reference numbers
After recording safe, non-explicit context, report the material through the platform and the channels that apply where you live. Keep confirmation messages, report IDs, and dates. Platform removal can matter, but if police or a regulator is already involved, ask whether relevant evidence should be preserved before removal. eSafety says it may check with police before removing content in some cases.

- Protection against brute force password attacks - Data is automatically erased after 6 unsuccessful access attempts. The data of the USB flash drive type c encryption with dual connectors is destroyed and the cryptographic drive is reset.
- Durable dual-layer waterproof design* — Protects the crypto reader from bumps, drops, run-in and immersion in water. The electronics are protected by a hardened internal case. Rubberized silicone outer case provides a final layer of protection.
- Auto-Lock —The cryptographic key automatically encrypts all data and locks when removed from a PC/Mac or when screen protection or "computer lock" is enabled.
- Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.
- In the United States: RAINN provides guidance on reporting tech-enabled sexual abuse, platform reporting, and account security. It also describes U.S. options for reporting child sexual exploitation. Its page says the TAKE IT DOWN Act requires platforms to remove qualifying non-consensual intimate images within 48 hours of a verified request; this is a U.S.-specific rule for qualifying requests, not a worldwide deadline. See RAINN’s reporting guidance.
- In Australia: eSafety accepts reports about image-based abuse and provides information on reporting to eSafety and getting police and legal help.
- Elsewhere: Use the relevant local regulator, police, or child-protection reporting route. Do not assume another country’s removal process or law applies to you.
Secure accounts only when it is safe
If an abuser may have access to your accounts, consider changing passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, checking active sessions, and reviewing privacy settings. But a security change can sometimes alert or provoke the person. If that could increase danger, pause and make a safety plan with trusted help or a support service before changing settings. RAINN outlines these account-security steps in its U.S. guidance.

| Method | Useful when | Key caution |
|---|---|---|
| Written notes and non-explicit details | You need a timeline, identifiers, URLs, threats, or report references without copying the image. | Keep notes factual and store them somewhere the abuser cannot access, if safe. |
| Screenshot of non-explicit context | The post, profile, or conversation context matters and capturing it is safe. | An app may notify the other person; preserve context and do not edit the only copy. |
| Photo of the screen using another device | An in-app screenshot could alert someone and the material being recorded is non-explicit. | This does not make copying illegal or restricted imagery appropriate. |
| Platform, regulator, or police report | You need removal or official help, or the image itself should not be handled by you. | Processes differ by location; retain confirmation numbers and ask about evidence preservation when an investigation is underway. |
If documenting the material is distressing, you can ask a trusted person or support service to help, provided doing so is safe. No one should need to circulate an intimate image to establish that abuse occurred.
