Save the stream immediately, then preserve it as evidence. Record the original URL, account or channel, stream title, displayed date and time, time zone, capture time, and the exact point where the relevant event appears. Obtain the platform’s native export or the uploader’s original file whenever possible. Keep that untouched file as an isolated master, make a separate working copy, calculate and preserve a hash, and log every transfer. A screen recording is only a fallback when the stream may disappear and no native file is available.
Start with preservation, not reporting
Livestream evidence can vanish when a broadcast ends, an account deletes it, a platform removes it, or an uploader changes access settings. Reporting first without saving the material can leave investigators with only a dead link. Preserve what you can while the stream is still reachable, then submit the report and tell the receiving authority that an original file and related records exist.
Work in this order:
- Document the live context. Save the URL, account or channel name, stream title, displayed date and time, time zone, viewer count if shown, and the precise point in the stream where the event occurs.
- Obtain the best available file. Use the platform’s download or export feature, or ask the uploader for the original file.
- Protect an untouched master. Isolate it from routine editing, trimming, playback exports, and accidental deletion.
- Create documented derivatives. Make a working copy for viewing, clipping, redaction, transcription, or sharing.
- Record integrity and handling. Hash the master, keep the hash separately, and log every copy, transfer, and change.
- Report promptly. Send the platform report and the relevant police, regulator, newsroom, or legal contact a factual description and preservation request.
This approach follows the principle in the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory’s Digital Imaging and Multimedia Procedure v3.0: “The key to the process is the creation of an identifiable, isolated and suitably stored Master reference copy at the earliest opportunity.”
Capture the stream’s context before downloading
A video file without provenance is harder to interpret. Before you close the page or begin a download, write a short, factual note and save supporting screenshots. Screenshots supplement the video; they do not replace the URL and file.

Record these identifying details
- The complete platform URL, copied exactly as displayed.
- The account, channel, or profile name and the stream title.
- The date and time shown by the platform, including its time zone or UTC offset when displayed.
- Your own capture date and time, with your time zone.
- The point in the stream where the relevant event appears. Use the player’s timestamp, such as “01:14:32,” and describe what happens there in neutral terms.
- The viewer count or other visible status information, if the platform shows it.
- Whether the stream is live, ended, replayable, restricted, age-gated, or already showing a removal notice.
Use screenshots as context records
Take screenshots that show the player, title, account name, URL or browser address bar, and any visible timestamp. Keep the original image files. Do not crop away identifying information in the context set. If you create a cropped image for a report, retain the uncropped screenshot separately and label the crop as a derivative.
Write only what you observed
Describe observable facts rather than conclusions. “At 01:14:32, a person in a red jacket enters from the left and an object falls” is more useful than “the suspect attacks someone.” If you are unsure whether a display clock is accurate, say that it is a platform-displayed time and record the time on your own device separately. The distinction prevents an apparent timestamp from being treated as a verified clock reading.
Choose the best available capture method
The native file is generally more valuable than a recording of a screen because it can retain the platform’s original data, metadata, audio, and picture quality. Use the fastest method that preserves the most information, but do not delay an imminent fallback capture while waiting for an export that may never arrive.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match| Method | Native file and metadata | Risk of recompression or alteration | Speed when disappearance is likely | Replay and handling notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platform download or export | Preferred method; native-format extraction is intended to retain evidential integrity, picture quality, and associated data. | Lower than a screen recording when the platform supplies the file directly; preserve the downloaded file unchanged. | Fast if the platform exposes an immediate download. | Keep the original format and any software or requirements needed to replay it. |
| Original file from the uploader | Can provide the uploader’s original file rather than a viewed or reposted copy. | Depends on how the uploader stores and transfers it; document receipt and do not alter the received file. | May be slower because it requires a response from the uploader. | Record who supplied it, when, how, and the file name and size at receipt. |
| Screen recording | Does not preserve the original stream data; it captures what appeared on your display. | Higher risk of recompression, missing metadata, altered timing, and display artifacts. | Useful as an emergency fallback when no native export is available and the stream may disappear. | Label it as a fallback, record its limitations, and continue seeking the native file. |
Use a platform export first
Look for the platform’s own download, export, archive, or creator-transfer function. Save the resulting file without opening it in an editor or re-encoding it. Copy the exact file name and size into your log. If the export provides sidecar metadata, captions, chat, or a manifest, keep those files with the master set and note their relationship to the video.
The UK Government’s Recovery and Acquisition of Video Evidence v3.0 states that “the preference for extraction of data in the native file format is to maintain evidential integrity and retain picture quality.” Native-format extraction is therefore the default, not an optional quality upgrade.
Ask the uploader for the original
If you are in contact with the streamer, request the original recording rather than a clip downloaded from a social-media page. Ask for the untrimmed file in the format in which it was recorded, along with any original metadata or replay software required. Record the request, the response, the date and time of transfer, and the transfer method. Do not ask the uploader to edit, enhance, or convert the file before sending it.

Make an emergency screen recording correctly
A screen recording is appropriate only as a fallback when a native export is unavailable or the stream is about to disappear. Capture the player and relevant interface context, including the account, title, visible timestamp, and URL when practical. Keep the recorder’s original output, do not trim it, and note the device, operating system, recording application, settings, start time, stop time, and any interruptions. State plainly in your log that it records a display and is not an untouched original.
Do not film a monitor with a separate camera if a direct screen capture is possible. UK guidance describes filming a screen as poor practice because it does not capture the original data. A camera recording can introduce reflections, moiré, focus problems, room audio, and an uncertain relationship between the camera clock and the stream.
Create an isolated master and a working copy
As soon as the best available file is saved, make two clearly separated roles: an untouched master and a working copy. The master is the reference object. The working copy is where ordinary viewing and reporting work occurs.
Protect the master
- Give the master a stable identifier and retain its original file name in the log.
- Store it in an isolated location with write protection or tightly controlled access.
- Do not trim, rotate, brighten, denoise, transcode, rename in place, or add annotations to the master.
- Prevent automatic synchronization or cleanup from deleting it accidentally.
- Keep a second protected backup when your organization’s policy permits, and log that copy as a transfer.
Isolation does not mean the file must be inaccessible forever. It means routine editing and accidental erasure cannot change the reference copy. Access should be limited to people who need it, with the access or handoff recorded.
Use the working copy for analysis
Duplicate the master before playback or editing if your tools might alter file metadata. Use the duplicate to make a short clip, blur a private address, add a timecode overlay, extract still frames, or create a transcript. Give every derivative a new file name and record the operation, software, operator, and date. A useful clip can help a newsroom or investigator find the event quickly, but it does not replace the untouched master.
Preserve replay requirements
Keep the original container and codec rather than converting solely for convenience. Save any associated metadata, audio, captions, or sidecar files. Record the software and version needed to replay the file when that information is available. The UK procedure says video evidence should be packaged with identification, metadata, replay requirements, and, where useful, audit trails or verification software.

Hash the master and document every transfer
A cryptographic hash is a fingerprint of the file at the moment you calculate it. If a later hash of the same bytes matches, you have evidence that the file did not change between those checks. A hash does not prove that the video depicts a truthful event, establish who created it, or prove that the camera clock was correct; it supports the narrower claim that the stored file remained identical.
Make and store the hash
- Calculate a hash of the untouched master as soon as practical.
- Record the hash value, file name, file size, date and time, device, and software used.
- Store the hash record separately from the master so that an alteration to one does not silently replace both.
- Recalculate the hash after a documented transfer or before disclosure and compare it with the original value.
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology recommends documenting the original source and each transfer and storing hash values separately. If no hash is made, NIST says an early copy should be stored on physical media and all transfers documented. Follow your organization’s approved forensic procedure for the specific hashing tool and algorithm.
Keep a contemporaneous evidence log
Write entries when events occur, not from memory days later. Your log should include:
- When and how you captured or received the file.
- The source URL, account or channel, title, and displayed date and time.
- The device, operating system, application, and relevant settings used for capture or transfer.
- The original file name, size, format, and associated files.
- Hash values and when they were calculated.
- Every copy, storage location, handoff, recipient, and transfer method.
- Any playback, trimming, redaction, conversion, or annotation performed on a derivative.
- Time checks, clock differences, interruptions, failed downloads, or other limitations.
Use unambiguous time zones. If your local clock is not synchronized, say so and record the displayed platform time separately. The UK guidance calls for contemporaneous notes and time checks because later readers need to understand how the evidence was obtained.
Store evidence so it can be checked later
Storage should preserve both the bytes and the explanation of how they were handled. A useful evidence set contains the master, a working copy or clearly identified derivatives, context screenshots, metadata or sidecar files, the hash record, and the transfer log.
| Storage practice | What it protects | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only or access-controlled master location | Prevents routine editing and accidental erasure of the reference file. | Location, access permissions, identifier, and each authorized access or transfer. |
| Separate hash record | Allows later integrity checks without relying on the video’s storage location alone. | Hash value, algorithm or tool used under your approved procedure, file identifier, and calculation time. |
| Physical early copy when hashing is unavailable | Provides an early preserved copy while maintaining a documented handling trail. | Media identifier, storage location, date, custodian, and every subsequent transfer. |
| Working-copy area | Allows clipping, redaction, transcription, and analysis without changing the master. | Source master identifier, derivative name, operation, software, operator, and date. |
Do not rely on a single browser cache, temporary download folder, or messaging-app attachment. Those locations can be cleared, recompressed, or detached from the context needed to interpret the video. If you must send a file through a service that changes it, retain the pre-transfer master and record that the sent version is a derivative.

Show that a reported clip was not silently changed
When someone asks whether a livestream was edited, answer with a chain of records rather than a visual impression. Provide the untouched master, its hash, the capture notes, and the derivative history. A short clip can be compared back to the master by its time range and extraction log.

Matching hashes show that a particular file is unchanged since the recorded hash. They do not by themselves establish that the file is the first-generation platform file, that its content is genuine, or that no earlier edit occurred before you received it. Those questions require source information, metadata, witness information, platform records, or other corroboration.
Keep edits visible and reversible
Never overwrite the only copy with a redacted or enhanced version. Preserve the unaltered master, name the derivative clearly, and describe every operation. If you blur a face for a public report, keep the unblurred master under appropriate access controls and disclose that the published image is a privacy-protective derivative.

Submit a factual platform report
Use the platform’s reporting path while the URL is still active. Include the exact URL, account or channel, stream title, relevant time range, a concise description of what is visible or audible, and your contact details if the form permits. State that you retained an original or fallback capture and can provide it through an appropriate channel. Avoid uploading a re-encoded clip when the platform’s form allows a link or file in the original format.
Contact the appropriate authority
For a suspected crime, contact the relevant police or law-enforcement agency. For a newsroom, send the evidence custodian or assigning editor the master identifier, hash record, context notes, and a working clip if needed. For legal proceedings, ask counsel how the jurisdiction wants the original preserved and disclosed. The U.S. National Institute of Justice defines digital evidence as “information and data of value to an investigation that is stored on, received, or transmitted by an electronic device.” Treat the file and its handling records as one evidence package.

Tell the receiving authority that platform availability may be brief and ask whether it should send a formal preservation request. X states that it may preserve a temporary snapshot for 90 days after a legally appropriate law-enforcement request; preservation does not itself disclose the records. That example illustrates why a report and a preservation request are different actions: one flags the content, while the other asks the service to retain records for a lawful process.

Common mistakes and how to recover
You saved only a screenshot
Keep the screenshot as context, but return to the URL and obtain a native export or original file if it remains available. Add the screenshot’s capture time and the circumstances of the failed video capture to the log.
You recorded the screen and have no native file
Preserve the screen recording in its original output format, label it as a fallback, hash it, and document the device, application, settings, and visible limitations. Report promptly and ask the platform or authority whether it can obtain the native source.
You edited the only copy
Stop editing. Keep the edited file, record exactly what changed and when, and look for the original download, browser file, device backup, or sender copy. Do not describe the edited file as the original; identify it as a derivative and preserve any newly recovered source separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe file will not replay
Do not convert or overwrite it immediately. Preserve the bytes, file name, size, and hash, then record the replay error and software used. Provide the receiving specialist with the original file and the replay requirements or codec information you recorded. A converted viewing copy may be made only after the original is protected and the conversion is logged.
You transferred the file without a log
Write a retrospective entry that identifies the gap instead of inventing missing details. Record who currently has the file, when you learned of the transfer, what can still be verified, and the next hash check. Transparency about a gap is more defensible than an unsupported claim of an unbroken chain.
A concise evidence-package checklist
- Original URL copied exactly.
- Account or channel name and stream title.
- Platform-displayed date, time, and time zone.
- Your capture or receipt time and time zone.
- Relevant player timestamp and neutral event description.
- Native export or uploader’s original file, when available.
- Fallback screen recording clearly labeled if used.
- Untouched, isolated master and separately identified working copy.
- Original format, metadata, audio, sidecar files, and replay requirements.
- Hash value stored separately from the master.
- Contemporaneous capture, transfer, and derivative log.
- Context screenshots retained as supplements.
- Platform report, authority contact, and any preservation request.
Preserving a livestream is not just downloading a video. It is preserving the file, the surrounding facts, and a traceable explanation of every handling step. The strongest submission is an untouched native file protected from alteration, supported by context and metadata, verified with a recorded hash, and delivered quickly with a complete transfer history.
