For an Earhart source, save two things: a full-page image of the webpage that describes or lists the record, and the original linked PDF or image as a separate file. Use Firefox’s Take Screenshot → Save full page → Download or Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot. Then inspect the image, create a metadata manifest, preserve an optional Internet Archive capture, and keep at least two copies on separate media. A screenshot records how a page appeared; it does not replace the archival file, catalog description, or proof of authenticity.
Which Earhart page should you capture first?
Start with the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Records Related to Amelia Earhart release page for federal material. Use NARA’s separate Records Relating to Amelia Earhart guide for record-group context and identifiers such as the Itasca radio log and the Navy–Coast Guard search report. For papers held elsewhere, the Library of Congress guide points researchers toward Purdue’s George Palmer Putnam Collection and other Earhart materials. Record the institution that actually holds each item; a search result or retelling is not the source.
NARA says digitization and online publication are continuing on a rolling basis, and some released records may contain FOIA redactions. Its release figures are dated groups, not a permanent collection total: examples include 4,624 pages (November 14, 2025), 3,715 pages (November 25, 2025), and 1,810 pages (December 17, 2025). NARA also lists two January 9, 2026 releases. Recheck the live release page before calling any group the latest or repeating a page count.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open the authoritative NARA, Library of Congress, university, or other holding institution page.
- Wait for the page to finish loading. If the page has expandable sections or lazy-loaded material, open the sections that are part of the evidence and scroll through the page once.
- Right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot. The keyboard shortcut is
Ctrl+Shift+Son Windows and Linux, orCommand+Shift+Son macOS. - Choose Save full page in the upper-right of the screenshot tool, then select Download.
- Give the image a descriptive filename, such as
nara-earhart-release-2026-11-02-full-page.png. Keep the original URL and capture time in your manifest rather than relying on the filename alone.
Open the downloaded image at a useful zoom and inspect it from the header to the footer. Confirm that headings, release links, dates, identifiers, embedded scans, and footnotes are visible. Look for cut-off content, duplicated sticky headers, unloaded images, or text too small to read. This inspection is quality control; it is not evidence that a particular page contains any of those defects.
How do I capture the same page in Chrome?
Chrome uses DevTools rather than a page-context menu for a full-size capture.
- Open the source page and launch DevTools with
F12orCtrl+Shift+I(Windows/Linux) orCommand+Option+I(macOS). - Enable the device toolbar by selecting its phone-and-tablet icon, or use the DevTools command menu if the icon is hidden.
- Open the device-toolbar More options menu.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves an image covering the page beyond the viewport.
- Review the file at the top and bottom, then rename it using the same institution, source, date, and method convention used for Firefox captures.
Firefox exposes the full-page command directly in its screenshot tool; Chrome places it in DevTools. Both are suitable for recording webpage appearance. Neither browser method establishes legal admissibility, an independent timestamp, or that every embedded archival asset was preserved.
What must be saved separately from the screenshot?
Download the original linked document whenever the source page offers one. A long webpage image is not a capture of every page in an embedded archival PDF.
- Source listing or record-description page: save the full-page screenshot.
- Original record: download the linked PDF, image, or other file in its original form.
- Multipart records: retain each part and note the exact part and page consulted. NARA says some larger files were split into parts and that listed counts were revised.
- Manifest: keep a text or spreadsheet record tying the image, original file, and source metadata together.
Use the catalog or archival identifier from the holding institution, not a number invented from your filename. If the PDF has its own title page, pagination, or revision information, preserve those details in the manifest.
What should an Earhart evidence manifest contain?
Create the manifest before moving to the next source. It makes a future reader able to identify exactly what was captured and what was downloaded.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Holding institution | For example, NARA, the Library of Congress, Purdue, or another named repository. |
| Collection and source title | The collection name and the exact page or record title as displayed. |
| Original URL | The complete page address, preserved even if an archive link is also created. |
| Catalog or file identifier | The repository’s record number, series, or file name. |
| Source date | The publication, release, or document date when the repository states one; do not confuse it with your capture time. |
| Capture time | Your computer-clock date, time, and timezone. |
| Browser and method | Firefox full-page screenshot or Chrome DevTools full-size screenshot, plus the browser version if you record versions. |
| Filenames | The screenshot filename, original PDF/image filename, and any multipart designation. |
| Page consulted | For a PDF, the page number or range used for a quotation or finding. |
| Archive URL | An Internet Archive Save Page Now link, if one was successfully created and checked. |
A capture timestamp is your recorded observation time, not the document’s publication date. Keep both fields so later readers cannot mistake one for the other.
How do I preserve a second web copy with Internet Archive?
Internet Archive’s Save Page Now can provide a separately hosted attempt to preserve the webpage.

- Submit the public source URL to Save Page Now.
- Wait for the capture to complete and open the resulting archive link.
- Check that the archived page actually shows the relevant text, links, and layout.
- Place the archive URL in the manifest while retaining the original URL.
Treat this as supplementary preservation. PDFs, scripts, interactive controls, and embedded viewers may not be captured, so never discard the original download or your local screenshot because an archive link exists.
How should I store and back up the evidence files?
Keep the screenshot, original document, and manifest together in a clearly named folder, then maintain at least two copies in different locations. The Library of Congress recommends multiple copies, periodic readability checks, and fresh media copies when needed.
- Create a folder such as
Earhart/NARA/release-2026-01-09/. - Place the webpage screenshot, original PDF or image, manifest, and any verified archive URL record inside it.
- Copy the folder to separate media. A search for
portable external SSDis one practical route;portable external hard driveandUSB flash driveare other media categories identified in digital-records guidance. - Keep the second copy in a different physical location or storage account, not beside the first drive.
- Periodically open representative files and replace aging or unreliable media with fresh copies.
Do not assume a portable drive is permanent merely because it is separate. Separation protects against loss of one device; periodic readability checks protect against silent failure and obsolete media.
Is a screenshot enough to prove an Earhart record?
No. A screenshot is a visual record of a webpage at a particular observation time. It does not authenticate the underlying document, prove that the page was complete, establish who controlled the server, or guarantee legal admissibility.
Use the screenshot to show what the repository’s listing or description looked like, and use the original PDF or image for the record’s contents. Cite the holding institution, collection, identifier, original URL, and relevant page number. If a source carries a copyright notice, follow the repository’s permissions requirements; keeping an evidence copy is not blanket permission to republish it.
An optional evidence-capture service may record a URL, computer-clock time, and SHA-256 checksum in an export. Such a checksum can show that a particular image file later remained unchanged, but it cannot prove the accuracy of the clock or what other visitors saw.
What should I compare when choosing Firefox or Chrome?
| Question | Firefox | Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the control? | Page context menu: Take Screenshot → Save full page. | DevTools device toolbar → More options → Capture a full size screenshot. |
| What it records | A full-page image of the rendered webpage. | A full-size image of the rendered webpage. |
| Best reason to choose it | The command is easy to find without opening DevTools. | The command is available in the DevTools workflow many developers already use. |
| Required verification | Inspect the saved image from header to footer and download the original archival file separately. | |
The choice is about workflow and inspection convenience, not a claim that either browser is forensically superior.

What are the common failure modes?
The image stops at the visible viewport
You selected a normal viewport capture rather than the full-page command. In Firefox reopen Take Screenshot and choose Save full page; in Chrome use DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot.
Images or expandable sections are missing
Let the page finish loading, expand relevant controls, and scroll through the page before capturing. If the material is an embedded PDF, download the PDF itself instead of expecting the webpage screenshot to contain every PDF page.
The PDF is split into several files
Download every part that pertains to your research, preserve the part names, and record the exact part and page in the manifest. NARA notes that some larger files were split and that release counts can be revised.
The archived webpage is incomplete
Open the completed Internet Archive capture and inspect it. Keep the local screenshot and original file even when the archive omits scripts, embedded viewers, or downloads.
A later reader cannot identify the source
Add the institution, exact title, original URL, catalog identifier, source date, capture time with timezone, browser method, filenames, and PDF page consulted. A descriptive filename alone is not a substitute for this metadata.
The file exists on only one device
Make a second copy on separate media and keep it elsewhere. Test readability periodically and migrate files when the media becomes unreliable.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can return a webpage screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For a NARA source, replace the URL below with the exact page you are documenting. The API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output and has options for full-page capture, lazy-loaded images, CSS selectors, waits, custom headers and cookies, user agents, blocking requests, viewport and device settings, and signed webhooks for asynchronous jobs.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the safest repeatable workflow?
For each Earhart source, use this order:
- Identify the repository that holds the record and note its collection context.
- Open the exact listing or record-description page and allow it to load fully.
- Capture the full webpage in Firefox or Chrome and inspect the saved image.
- Download the original linked PDF or image, including every relevant multipart file.
- Record the manifest fields while the page and file identifiers are in front of you.
- Optionally submit the public URL to Internet Archive Save Page Now and verify the result.
- Store the screenshot, original file, and manifest together in at least two separate locations.
- When citing the evidence, distinguish the webpage image, the archival document, and any web-archive copy.
This separation keeps a changing webpage from being mistaken for the historical record it describes and gives future readers enough metadata to retrace your source.

Should I save HTML as well as a screenshot?
If your workflow permits, saving the page’s downloadable or print representation can provide another local reference, but it should supplement—not replace—the full-page image and original archival file. Record which representation you saved because HTML can depend on scripts or external assets.
Do I need to capture every NARA release page?
Capture the release or record-description pages that support the specific records you cite. NARA’s index is evolving, so a focused manifest tied to each cited item is more useful than an unexplained bulk of screenshots.
Can I quote text found only in the screenshot?
Prefer the original PDF or image for the quotation and record its page number. If the wording exists only on the webpage, cite the webpage URL and capture time, and explain that the quotation comes from the webpage rather than the archival document.

What if the repository changes its URL?
Keep the original URL exactly as captured, add any working replacement URL to a new manifest entry, and preserve the local files. An archive link can help readers reach an older view, but it does not eliminate the need to retain the original address.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a checksum make the evidence legally valid?
No. A checksum can help demonstrate that a local image file was not altered after it was created. It does not authenticate the repository, verify the capture clock, establish completeness, or guarantee that a court will admit the file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a full-page screenshot include a PDF embedded in the webpage?
Usually it records the webpage shell and whatever the browser renders in that page, not every page of an embedded document. Download the linked PDF as its own evidence file and cite its internal pagination.
Should the capture time use UTC or local time?
Either is workable if the timezone is recorded consistently. Include the computer-clock timezone in every manifest entry so captures from different locations can be ordered correctly.
How can I show that two files belong to the same source?
Use a shared case or item identifier in both filenames and the manifest, then record the exact original URL and catalog identifier. Keeping the files in one folder adds context but does not replace those fields.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What should I do when a page requires a login?
Do not bypass access controls. Record the repository and access conditions in the manifest, capture only what your authorized session displays, and obtain permission before redistributing any resulting file.
