To request JPEG, use the screenshot thumbnail endpoint with format=jpeg, or choose the format in a batch or crawl request. The format setting is endpoint-specific, so don’t assume it works the same way on every Browshot retrieval method.
Save a single Browshot screenshot as PNG
Browshot’s simple API returns the screenshot in PNG format, according to its API documentation. From a terminal, use curl -L to follow redirects and -o to write the response to a local file:

YOUR_API_KEYwith your Browshot API key. Keep the key private, especially if you save this command in a script or shell history. - Replace
https://example.com/with the page URL you want to capture. URL-encode special characters if needed when building a request. - Run the command in a terminal. The response is saved as
screenshot.pngin the current directory.
The -L option matters because it follows HTTP redirects. Browshot’s curl guide also documents parameters such as size=page and width for full-page or thumbnail requests; use the parameters supported by the endpoint you call.
Request JPEG from the thumbnail endpoint
For the full screenshot API, Browshot documents a workflow in which you create a screenshot and then request its thumbnail by screenshot ID. On that thumbnail endpoint, the format parameter accepts jpeg or png and defaults to PNG. A JPEG thumbnail request follows this general pattern:

Check the exact endpoint path and required parameters in Browshot’s API documentation for your account and workflow.
JPEG quality is a thumbnail setting
Browshot documents quality from 1 to 100 for JPEG thumbnails only. For example, add &quality=85 to a thumbnail request using format=jpeg if you want to set that documented option. The documentation does not establish that this quality setting applies to PNG, so do not add it expecting to control PNG output.

Choose the right format and retrieval method

Use the extension that matches the requested output: .png for PNG and .jpg or .jpeg for JPEG. The reviewed documentation does not provide a measured comparison of image size or visual quality between formats, so choose according to the format your downstream workflow requires rather than assuming a particular size saving.
Save locally or use Browshot hosting
The curl examples above save the API response to your local machine. Browshot also documents hosting screenshots or thumbnails through S3 or Browshot hosting. For S3, the documentation requires a bucket and permits an optional filename. Consult the hosting section of the API documentation for the options applicable to your account.

Troubleshoot common download problems
- The saved file is not an image: Confirm the endpoint and request succeeded before relying on the filename. A filename extension does not convert the response; the format is determined by the endpoint and its supported parameters.
- The file is empty or the request fails: Check that the API key is present and valid, the URL is properly encoded, and the requested screenshot or thumbnail ID exists. Browshot’s curl instructions recommend following redirects with
-L. - JPEG is not returned: Verify that you are using an endpoint that documents a JPEG format option. The simple API response is documented as PNG; the thumbnail endpoint, batch, and crawl documentation describe JPEG/PNG format choices.
- A quality parameter has no effect: Browshot documents
qualityfor JPEG thumbnails only. It is not a documented PNG quality control.
