To keep a YouTube livestream recording, make a local recording while you stream, then save a separate copy to cloud storage. YouTube may automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but says a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. After the stream, find its archive in YouTube Studio or export your own video through Studio or Google Takeout.
Choose the right kind of copy
A YouTube replay and a backup stored elsewhere are separate copies. You can manage the channel archive in YouTube Studio, including changing its visibility or deleting it. An exported copy gives you a file outside the channel, but it does not prove that the original recording was preserved. For important streams, keep a local recording as well as a cloud copy.
| Method | When to use it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Local recording during the stream | When you need a dependable archive or want to retain the recording made by your capture setup | YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. Keep the original file somewhere safe before relying on exports. |
| YouTube Studio download | When you need one creator-owned video | YouTube documents an MP4 download at 720p or 360p, depending on video size. It may not be the original camera or encoder file. |
| Google Takeout export | When you want to export YouTube videos in bulk | You can select YouTube data and choose a supported destination where offered, or download the export and upload it yourself. |
Before or during the livestream
Record locally if the video matters
Set your streaming or capture setup to save a local recording while the broadcast is running. YouTube Help recommends a local archive as a backup. This is the best way to retain the file produced by your own setup rather than depending only on a channel replay or a later download.
Be cautious with streams near or over 12 hours
YouTube says it can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours, including encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. It also warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If you need a recording, do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream that may cross that limit; make a local recording.

- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)

Find and manage the YouTube archive
- Sign in to the YouTube account that hosted the stream and open YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, choose Content, then the Live tab.
- Select the past stream you want to manage.
- Use the video details and visibility controls to review or change the archive, or delete it if that is what you intend.
YouTube says a livestream archive is uploaded to the channel by default. Its Archive live streams guidance explains archive behavior and management. For more about promoting live video, see YouTube’s live stream guidance.
Download one of your own livestreams
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content.
- Find the video, open its options menu, and choose Download.
- Save the downloaded MP4 to your computer, then upload it to your cloud storage account if you want an off-channel copy.
YouTube documents the individual download as MP4 at 720p or 360p, depending on the video size. If preserving the original quality or the exact file from your recording setup matters, use your local recording instead. YouTube’s download instructions say a video cannot be downloaded this way if it was removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, or uses a pre-approved audio track. You can download an individual video up to five times in 24 hours.

This workflow is for videos you uploaded. It is not the same as YouTube Premium offline viewing, and it does not provide a way to download someone else’s video through the creator-download feature.
Export YouTube videos with Google Takeout
- Open Google Takeout and sign in to the Google account that owns the channel videos.
- Choose the YouTube data you want included in the export. If videos belong to a Brand Account, switch to that account if needed to find the right content.
- Choose an available cloud destination, such as Drive, Box, OneDrive, or Dropbox, or create an export to download and upload yourself. Destination availability can depend on the options shown in Takeout.
- Before starting, check that the destination account has enough available space for the export.
- After the export is ready, verify that the files you need are present and accessible in the destination.
Google’s Takeout help describes exporting Google data and available destinations. Exporting creates a copy; Google says downloading your data does not delete it from Google’s servers. The cited Takeout guidance does not promise that every livestream export will be byte-identical to your local source recording.

Plan storage and keep the backup useful
There is no single storage amount that fits every channel. File size depends on the recording’s length, resolution, bitrate, and how many streams you keep. Estimate from your own recordings, check the free space in the cloud account you plan to use, and decide how long you need to retain each file. Current storage quotas and plan prices vary by provider and are not specified here.
- Keep the local original for recordings you cannot afford to lose.
- Upload a separate copy to a cloud account rather than treating the YouTube replay as your only backup.
- Confirm that an export completed and that you can open the files before deleting or replacing any source copy.
- Remember that changing or deleting the channel archive does not itself verify what is stored in an independent cloud account.
Troubleshooting
The past livestream is missing from YouTube Studio
Check Content > Live in the account and channel that hosted it, including the correct Brand Account if applicable. A stream longer than 12 hours may not have been captured at all. If there is no archive, look for the local recording or an existing export.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

The Studio download option is unavailable
Confirm that you are signed in as the creator and that the video has not been removed or received a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, and does not use a pre-approved audio track. YouTube also limits individual downloads to five per video in 24 hours.
The downloaded file is lower resolution than expected
YouTube documents Studio downloads at 720p or 360p, depending on video size. If you need the file as captured by your own camera or encoder, retrieve the local recording rather than assuming the Studio download is the original source file.

The Takeout export does not appear in the expected account
Check which Google account and, where relevant, Brand Account you selected. Google notes that Brand Account owners may need to switch accounts to find the right videos.
The cloud export cannot be stored
Check available space in the selected destination. If it is insufficient, select another supported destination or download the export and upload it to an account with enough room. Exact quotas and export completion times depend on the provider and are not established here.

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube livestream, rather than archive a past broadcast, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos and YouTube only, not a camera livestream; it does not replace saving a separate recording of a live broadcast.
