To make a ZIP you can hand off or store, first create a local copy of the pages you need, then compress that folder. HTTrack can mirror a website into a local directory and rewrite retained links for offline browsing; it also documents WARC and WACZ output for web archiving. These are different results: a ZIP packages files, while WARC/WACZ is intended to preserve and replay a web capture. A mirror is not necessarily a complete record of a dynamic website.

Choose the kind of offline record you need

Result What it is for What to expect
Local mirror Browsing captured pages and resources offline. A directory of downloaded files with retained links rewritten for local browsing. HTTrack describes this behavior in its command-line guide.
ZIP package Storing or handing off the captured mirror as one compressed file. Compress the verified output directory after capture. A ZIP is packaging, not a separate archival capture format.
WARC or WACZ Keeping a web-capture record for archival replay. HTTrack documents WARC output and WACZ as a bundle containing the archive, index, and pages for replay tools. See its documentation and archive format notes.
Single-page capture or PDF Keeping a convenient reading copy of one page. This is not a site mirror. The sources cited here do not establish current browser-specific save steps.

If you need navigation among several pages, start with a scoped mirror. If the record may need to be replayed as an archive, choose WARC/WACZ rather than assuming that zipping a folder provides the same record.

Create a scoped local mirror with HTTrack

HTTrack describes itself as a website copier that saves a site to a local directory and rewrites retained links so the local copy can be browsed. It offers graphical and command-line use. The precise labels and options can vary by interface and version, so consult the current HTTrack documentation for the controls in your installation.

  1. Set the starting URL. Enter the site or section you need, rather than beginning with a broad domain if only a few pages matter.
  2. Choose a project and destination directory. This is the working mirror that you will inspect and, if desired, compress after the crawl.
  3. Constrain the capture scope. Set the allowed site, paths, and any other scope controls so the crawl does not wander beyond the intended record. Keep the capture within access restrictions.
  4. Run the capture. HTTrack parses downloaded pages for more links and rewrites the ones it keeps for offline browsing. Its command-line guide puts it this way: “After a page is downloaded, HTTrack parses it for more links and rewrites the ones it kept so the local copy browses offline.”
  5. Review the output and logs. Check the entry page, several linked pages, and important resources before treating the mirror as usable.
  6. Package the checked directory. Use your operating system’s archive utility to compress the resulting folder as ZIP. Keep the folder structure intact so local links continue to work when the recipient extracts it.

For archival replay instead of a simple ZIP

HTTrack documents WARC output and WACZ packaging. WACZ includes the archive, index, and pages for replay tools; preserve that output when replayable archival capture is the goal. A WARC/WACZ file is not just a compressed website folder, and ordinary ZIP packaging does not turn a mirror into a WARC record.

Check whether the saved copy is useful offline

  • Open the saved entry page from the local output and follow several internal links. If practical, disconnect from the network to check that the copy is not silently relying on live resources.
  • Check that the images, stylesheets, documents, and other resources important to your record are present.
  • Review the capture logs and note failed pages or links rather than treating the directory as complete.
  • Record the original URL and capture date alongside the archive. Websites change, so the local copy represents a snapshot, not the current live site.
  • If you created WARC/WACZ, confirm that the replay tool you intend to use can open the output.
  • Keep a second copy if the record matters. Existing local disk or removable storage can hold the files; HTTrack does not require a dedicated drive.

Limits of a website mirror

A mirror may not retain every resource or behavior of the live site. Content loaded only after user interaction, remote resources, and server-side functions may not work as expected in a local copy. The Digital Preservation Coalition’s web preservation guidance warns that tools such as HTTrack and print-to-PDF can flatten content and may not adequately capture the record; that guidance is older and should not be read as a current-version evaluation.

HTTrack provides scope and parsing controls, but those controls do not make every site fully capturable. Its command-line documentation cautions that disabling security limits should only be done against infrastructure you are allowed to load. Limit the crawl to what you need and respect site access restrictions.

Screenshot a page when a browsable mirror is not necessary

A screenshot can preserve the visible appearance of a page, but it is not a ZIP mirror of the site or a WARC/WACZ archival record. If a visual record is enough, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; one GET request can return an image or PDF. This route captures a page rather than creating a browsable local website copy.

Or skip the browser setup

Use this cURL request to save a screenshot response as a file; replace the URL with the page you need and use your ScreenshotNeo API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

Troubleshoot an incomplete or unusable capture

Pages or links are missing

Check the crawl scope and logs first. A URL outside the permitted paths or domains will not be part of the mirror; adjust scope only when you are authorized to capture the additional pages, then recapture and inspect the result.

The local page loads without styling or images

Check whether the corresponding resource files were captured and whether the local page references them. If those resources are remote or outside the scope, the offline copy may depend on the live site; refine the allowed scope where appropriate and verify the new output.

Interactive features do not work

A local mirror may not reproduce server-side behavior or content that only appears after an action. A downloaded collection of files is not a substitute for the running site. If those behaviors are essential evidence, preserve an archival capture in a replayable format and document what the capture did not retain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a ZIP file preserve a website exactly as it was?

No. A ZIP packages the files captured by the mirror; it does not guarantee that dynamic behavior, remotely loaded resources, or every page was preserved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a ZIP archive the same as WARC or WACZ?

No. ZIP is ordinary file packaging. HTTrack documents WARC and WACZ for web-capture records; WACZ bundles an archive, index, and pages for replay tools.

Can a screenshot replace a website mirror?

Only if a visual record of a page is enough. A screenshot does not provide the linked local pages and resources of a mirror or the replayable archive structure of WARC/WACZ.
