The dependable method is two steps: open the article in your browser’s reading mode to remove clutter, then save that simplified view as a PDF, an offline reading-list item, or a local webpage file. Reading mode changes what you see; it does not by itself create an offline copy.
Choose the saved format before you start
Different formats preserve different parts of a page. Decide whether you need a clean document, browser-based offline reading, or an editable local copy.

No format guarantees that videos, interactive controls, forms, quizzes, login screens or future page changes will work offline. Treat every saved copy as a snapshot.
Step 1: open a clean reading view
Firefox desktop: Reader View
- Open the article in Firefox.
- Look for the Reader View icon in the address bar. It appears only when the page is eligible.
- Select the icon. Firefox removes clutter such as advertisements, buttons, background images and videos from the reading presentation.
- Adjust text appearance if needed, then keep this tab open for the save step.

Chrome desktop: Reading mode
- Open the article in Chrome.
- Open Reading mode from the right-click menu, the address bar, or More tools, depending on your Chrome version.
- Use its controls to show or hide links and images as appropriate.
- Continue to the PDF or offline-save method below.
Google notes that Reading mode is not available for every website and may not work as expected on galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages or login screens. See Google’s Reading mode instructions.
Step 2: save the clean view as a PDF
Firefox
- With Reader View open, choose Firefox’s Print command.
- In the print dialog, select Save to PDF as the destination.
- When the Format choice is available, select Simplified.
- Review the preview for missing paragraphs, odd page breaks, headers or footers.
- Save the file and open it once before deleting the online bookmark.

Chrome
- Open the simplified Reading mode presentation.
- Use Chrome’s print command (usually More → Print).
- Choose Save to PDF, select the destination folder and inspect the preview.
- Save, then test the PDF with your network disconnected if offline access matters.
Chrome’s Reading mode applies only to the text it presents, so compare the PDF with the original if images, links or sidebars are important.
Save for offline reading in a browser
Safari for Mac
- Add the article to Safari’s Reading List.
- Open the Reading List sidebar, locate the item and use Save Offline.
- For automatic saving, open Safari’s Advanced settings and enable the option to save Reading List articles automatically.
- Test by turning off Wi-Fi and opening the item from Reading List.

Chrome desktop
Chrome documents both downloading pages for offline reading and using Reading List. The exact menu wording is version-sensitive, so use Chrome Help’s current Read pages later & offline steps for your release. Save while connected, then verify the item with networking disabled.

Chrome on iPhone or iPad
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Open the More menu and choose Add to Reading List.
- Keep the device online while Chrome saves it.
- Open the Reading List later. Chrome notes that reopening a saved item while online loads the live version, so test offline if that distinction matters.

Save a local webpage file in Firefox
Use Firefox’s Save Page As when you need a file you can keep outside the browser. The format determines what survives.
- Open the page, then choose Save Page As.
- Select one of the available formats.
- Choose a folder and save.
- Open the result locally and check images, links and text before relying on it.
Web page, complete
Firefox saves the HTML plus pictures and supporting files in a directory alongside the page. The local copy may not preserve the original HTML link structure exactly.
Web page, HTML only
This keeps the HTML and original link structure but omits pictures. It is useful when text and links matter more than visual assets.
Text files
This keeps text without the original link structure. Choose it for a lightweight, readable text record rather than a faithful webpage.

When a page will not cleanly save
No Reader View or Reading mode icon
The page is not eligible, or the browser cannot identify a main article. Try the print dialog directly, copy the article into a document, or save the original page and accept that advertisements may remain. Reader modes are not universal ad blockers.

You probably selected HTML-only or text format, or the page loads assets dynamically. Use Firefox’s complete format when images are required, then keep the generated support folder with the HTML file.
The PDF looks different from the screen
Print styles can change columns, backgrounds, margins and page breaks. Review the preview, switch to a simplified format where offered, and confirm that every page and heading is present.
Interactive content does not work offline
PDFs and saved HTML are snapshots. Video players, maps, forms, quizzes, authentication and script-generated content may need the original website. Save a PDF for a stable record and retain the URL separately when interaction is essential.

Chrome’s saved item shows the live page
Chrome can load the current online version when you are connected. Disconnect from the network and reopen the item to verify that an offline representation was actually stored.

Checklist before deleting the original bookmark
- Confirm the title, author and date are visible in the saved copy.
- Open the PDF, local file or Reading List item once.
- Test offline if offline access is the reason you saved it.
- Check required images, links and page numbers.
- Keep the original URL for dynamic or interactive material.
- Use a descriptive filename, such as
topic-site-2026-09-29.pdf.
Frequently asked questions
Does saving a page remove ads from the website itself?
No. Reading mode and saved copies change your representation of the page; the publisher’s live page remains unchanged.
Which format keeps clickable links?
Firefox’s HTML-only format keeps the original HTML link structure but omits pictures. A PDF can contain clickable links when the browser’s print process includes them, so test the finished file.
Can I save an entire site without advertisements?
The methods here save individual pages. A site-wide archive requires separate crawling, storage and rights considerations and is not provided by browser Reading List features.
