Save an unaltered screenshot of the relevant webpage, then use your browser’s Print command to save a PDF. Keep both files with the exact page URL and the capture date and time, inspect the PDF for missing content, and store a separate backup. These files document what you captured; they do not by themselves prove who published the page or guarantee that a court will accept it.
Save both formats while preserving context
- Open the exact page. Make the relevant content and identifying details visible. For a long page or post, expand relevant comments and preserve enough surrounding content to show context; take multiple screenshots or print pages rather than cropping away important details.
- Capture a screenshot. Save an unaltered image of the relevant page. Preserve the original file rather than editing or overwriting it.
- Print the page to PDF. In your browser, choose Print (or right-click the page and choose Print; Ctrl+P works in compatible desktop browsers). Select Save as PDF. If available, turn on headers and footers so the PDF includes the website link and date.
- Inspect the PDF. Open it and compare it with the live page. Browser printouts can omit material, so capture additional pages or use another method if relevant content is missing.
- Keep the files and their context together. Save the screenshot and PDF with the exact URL, capture date and time, and, if useful, the page title. Preserve original files and make a separate backup in a secure location, such as an external drive.
Tech Safety Canada’s website-preservation guidance recommends preserving the full relevant page and its identifying context. A screenshot and PDF offer complementary records: one shows the page’s appearance, while the other is convenient to read or print.
When to save a webpage copy too
A saved HTML or webpage copy can retain source files that a screenshot or PDF does not, but locally saved pages may have broken components. If you save one, keep it alongside the original screenshot and PDF; consider taking a screenshot of the locally saved page before downloading it as a backup. No single format necessarily preserves every aspect of a live website.
Make the capture safer to rely on later
- Keep the original screenshot and PDF, and record the URL and capture date and time with them.
- Retain enough surrounding content and identifying context to make clear what page you captured.
- Check that the saved PDF and any webpage copy contain the material you meant to preserve.
- Store a separate backup. If someone may monitor your device or cloud account, consider whether saving evidence there could expose you; use a safer device or account and seek specialized support if needed.
A browser extension listing describes a tool that creates a PDF exhibit with a visible-page screenshot, source URL and title, UTC time, and SHA-256 hash. Those are product-listed features, not independent confirmation that a capture is complete or legally sufficient. Before using an extension, check its current features and privacy practices. What these files do—and do not—establish
A screenshot or PDF records what was captured, but does not automatically establish who published the page or authenticate the capture. Tech Safety Canada cautions that screenshots may not be sufficient in every case. An Arizona Courts-hosted digital-evidence reference discusses webpage attribution and Internet Archive evidence in its jurisdiction. Requirements depend on the proceeding and jurisdiction; for an actual case, preserve the original files and details of how you captured them, then check applicable local rules or consult counsel.
