A standard-size menu is not the same as a field for arbitrary width and height: ordinary browser dialogs do not all provide custom dimensions. If you need exact dimensions, use a page stylesheet you control, a managed Chrome policy, or a PDF-generation API such as WebView2, depending on your role.
Save a webpage as a PDF using the browser’s print preview
- Open Print. In Microsoft Edge, open the menu and choose Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS. Firefox also provides a print preview from the browser’s print command. Edge print help and Firefox print help describe their respective workflows.
- Choose the PDF destination. Firefox labels its destination “Save to PDF.” In other browsers, choose the available PDF destination or system PDF printer.
- Inspect the settings. Expand More settings if present. Look for Paper size, Scale, Margins, page range, headers and footers, and background graphics. The controls vary by browser, operating system, and selected destination.
- Adjust and review the preview. If the exact paper size is unavailable, a standard size with adjusted scale or margins may be an acceptable compromise. Check page breaks, clipping, legibility, backgrounds, and headers or footers before saving.
- Save and verify. Give the PDF a filename and save it. When exact dimensions matter, inspect the resulting PDF’s page size in a PDF viewer or editor; the print preview alone is not a substitute for verifying the saved file.
Firefox documents paper size, scale, margins, backgrounds, and headers or footers in its print controls. Edge documents scaling options including Fit to printable area, Actual size, and a custom percentage, along with margin and background settings. Neither documentation page establishes that every standard consumer print dialog accepts arbitrary width and height.
When can you enter an exact custom paper size?
For a webpage you control: use CSS @page
If you can edit the page’s stylesheet or add a print stylesheet, CSS @page can set the printed page box’s dimensions and margins. Chrome for Developers says Chrome and Firefox support the at-rule. It affects printing of the page where the rule is applied; it is not a general control for imposing dimensions on an unrelated website.

}Replace the example dimensions with the width and height you need. This example uses millimeters and sets all four margins to 12 mm. The CSS page size defines the printed page box, while the page content is laid out and fragmented across pages. Check the resulting preview because content can still overflow or break in unexpected places. Chrome for Developers also notes that browsers may add automatic headers and footers when there is room; the print dialog can turn them off, and very small or zero margins can suppress them.

For managed Chrome: administrators can set a page-size policy
Google documents a “Default printing page size” policy for managed Chrome. Its Custom option takes required height and width in micrometers and is available on ChromeOS and Chrome browser for Windows, Mac, and Linux. This is an administrator-managed setting, not evidence that every user sees an arbitrary-size control in the ordinary print dialog.
Google warns that incompatible values, or a size unavailable on the selected printer, cause the policy to be ignored. Consult Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education printing policy documentation for policy configuration and compatibility details.

For a desktop application embedding WebView2: use its PDF API
Developers embedding Microsoft WebView2 can create PDF output with custom print settings through PrintToPdf or PrintToPdfStream. The ShowPrintUI route opens a browser or operating-system print dialog and offers less customization. These are application-development options, not ordinary browser preferences. What to check before saving
- Page dimensions: confirm the selected size or verify the saved PDF’s actual dimensions when precision matters.
- Clipping and pagination: check whether wide elements are cut off and whether content breaks at sensible points.
- Scale and legibility: shrinking content to fit can make text too small; scaling changes content size.
- Margins: margins reduce the usable content area and can alter page breaks.
- Backgrounds and browser furniture: check whether background graphics and automatic headers or footers are included. Firefox and Edge expose relevant print controls, but the available options depend on the workflow.
Web pages can print differently from how they appear on screen. Edge also documents Immersive Reader as a way to reduce page clutter where that feature is available; it is a layout workaround, not a means of defining arbitrary PDF dimensions.

Troubleshooting custom-size PDF output
The print dialog has no custom dimensions field
That can be normal: a paper-size menu does not guarantee a free-form width-and-height field. If you control the page, set its print dimensions with @page. In a managed Chrome environment, ask the administrator whether the documented page-size policy is configured. Otherwise, choose the closest available standard size or use an application API such as WebView2 if you are developing the software that generates the PDF.

The custom size is ignored
For managed Chrome policy, check that the width and height values are compatible and that the selected printer supports the size; Google says incompatible or unavailable sizes cause the policy to be ignored. For CSS, verify that the stylesheet applies to print and that your browser supports the rule.
Content is clipped, tiny, or split awkwardly
Review the preview, then adjust scale and margins or change the page dimensions. Edge’s Fit to printable area, Actual size, and custom percentage settings produce different trade-offs: fitting can shrink content, while actual size can leave wide content outside the printable area. If you control the page, revise its print CSS and inspect the pagination again.

Backgrounds or headers and footers are missing or unexpected
Check the print dialog’s background-graphics and headers-and-footers controls. Browser-generated headers and footers are separate from the page’s own printed content, and their appearance can depend on available margin space.

The saved PDF does not have the expected page size
Reopen the print dialog and verify its destination and paper-size selection, then inspect the PDF’s page dimensions in a viewer or editor. Do not assume that choosing a similarly named paper size, changing scale, or seeing the expected preview guarantees the exact saved dimensions.

Can I set any width and height in every browser’s Save to PDF dialog?
No. The official help pages document paper-size controls and other print settings, but do not establish a free-form dimension field in every browser, platform, or destination.
Does CSS @page let me change the size of any website I visit?
No. It applies when you control or can supply the page’s print stylesheet; it is not a universal visitor-side setting.
