To save a WebP image as a JPG, open it in an editor that supports WebP, choose Save As or Export, select JPEG/JPG, and save a new file. Do not merely rename .webp to .jpg; that changes the label, not the image data. On Windows, Paint.NET is a documented option because it opens WebP files and exports JPEG files.
Why a downloaded image ends in .webp
WebP is an image format designed for efficient web delivery. Google describes it as providing better lossy and lossless compression than older formats, and it is natively supported by major browsers and many software libraries (Google WebP documentation). A website may therefore deliver a WebP even when the picture looks like a conventional JPG in your browser.
JPEG (usually written as JPG) remains useful when a website, application, printer, document system, or upload form specifically requires JPEG. JPEG is a widely used lossy format for still images (MDN image format guide). Conversion is a real re-encoding step, so the destination file contains JPEG data rather than WebP data.
Convert WebP to JPG on Windows with Paint.NET
Paint.NET documentation lists WebP (*.webp) as an input format and JPEG extensions including *.jpg and *.jpeg as output formats. Its Save As command lets you preserve the original while choosing a new name, format, and location (Paint.NET file documentation).
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Open Paint.NET.
- Choose File > Open.
- Select the WebP file and open it.
- Choose File > Save As, not a command that overwrites the source.
- Pick a destination folder and enter a new filename.
- In the file-type list, select JPEG or JPG.
- Click Save. If a JPEG quality dialog appears, choose a setting that balances visual quality and file size, then confirm.
The resulting file is a JPEG. The original WebP remains available because you used Save As and a separate filename.
Choosing JPEG quality
JPEG uses lossy compression. Higher quality generally retains more detail and produces a larger file; lower quality creates a smaller file but can introduce blockiness, ringing around text, or smeared fine detail. Use a high setting for archival or print work, and reduce it only when a site imposes a size limit. There is no universal “best” number because the appropriate setting depends on the image and the required file size.
Other desktop and offline conversion methods
| Method | Availability | Offline | Batch and controls | Privacy and limitations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paint.NET | Windows | Yes, after installation | Single-image workflow documented; JPEG quality dialog may appear | Image stays on your computer; preserves the WebP by using Save As |
| Image editor with WebP import and JPEG export | Depends on the application and version | Usually | May offer batch processing, resizing, metadata and quality controls | Confirm that WebP opens and JPEG is an export type before relying on it |
Command line with dwebp |
Systems where Google’s WebP tools are installed | Yes | Good for scripts and repeatable decoding; JPEG export requires a second step | First output is PNG or PPM, not JPG; see the command-line section |
| Web-based converter | Any system with a compatible browser | No | Some offer batch conversion and quality controls | You upload the image to a third party; check its privacy and retention terms |
For sensitive screenshots, IDs, unpublished designs, or customer images, an offline editor avoids uploading the source. For many files, choose a tool that explicitly supports batch conversion and lets you set a destination and JPEG quality consistently.
Convert WebP from the command line
Google’s WebP toolkit includes dwebp, which decodes a WebP file to PNG or PPM (dwebp documentation). This is useful when a script or server cannot open WebP directly:

- Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
- Windows 11 Pro
dwebp image.webp -o image.png
Open the generated PNG in an editor that exports JPEG, then use its JPEG export or Save As command. The documented dwebp command does not itself create a JPG; it creates an intermediate PNG or PPM, so a second conversion step is required. PNG can be lossless, but the final JPEG conversion is still lossy.
Batch scripting considerations
- Keep the original WebP files until you have checked the JPG output.
- Write output to a different directory or use a new extension so a script cannot overwrite its inputs.
- Use predictable names and log failures, especially when processing folders.
- Check the converted files by opening them and confirming their actual type, dimensions and orientation.
Can you just rename .webp to .jpg?
No. Renaming photo.webp to photo.jpg changes only the filename extension. The bytes remain WebP, so software that examines the file signature may reject it or report that the extension and contents do not match (Google WebP FAQ). Export or transcode the image instead.
Quality, transparency and color details
Repeated lossy conversion
If the source WebP is lossy, converting it to JPEG can add another generation of lossy compression. Avoid repeatedly opening and saving the JPG. If you need several edits, keep a lossless master such as the original WebP (when it is lossless) or an editor’s native project file, and export the final JPG once.
Transparency
JPEG does not preserve an alpha channel. A transparent WebP must be composited against a background during export; otherwise the editor may use a default background or ask you to choose one. If transparency is essential, retain the WebP or use a format that supports transparency, such as PNG, for the transparent version.

Dimensions, orientation and metadata
A normal format conversion should not intentionally change pixel dimensions, but an editor may expose resizing, rotation or metadata options. Check width, height and orientation after export. Metadata handling varies by application, so do not assume that every camera tag, color profile or comment will survive.
Troubleshooting WebP-to-JPG conversion
The editor says the file cannot be opened
- Confirm that the file is actually a WebP and that the download completed.
- Update or switch to an editor whose documentation lists WebP input support.
- Use
dwebp image.webp -o image.pngas an offline decoding test.
JPEG is not offered in Save As
Look for Export rather than Save As, or use an application that documents JPEG output. Do not solve the problem by changing the extension manually.
The output has a background instead of transparency
That is expected: JPEG has no transparency channel. Choose the intended background before export and keep the original transparent WebP if you need to edit it later.
The JPG looks blurry or has halos
Raise the JPEG quality setting, avoid repeated saves, and compare the JPG at its actual display size. Text, sharp UI edges and line art are particularly sensitive to aggressive JPEG compression.

The file is still too large
Reduce pixel dimensions when the destination does not need the original resolution, then adjust JPEG quality. Make one controlled export rather than repeatedly recompressing the same JPG.
An upload form rejects the converted file
Check that the file’s detected type is JPEG, not merely that its name ends in .jpg. Also verify the form’s maximum dimensions, file size, color-mode requirements and permitted extension. Re-export to a standard RGB JPEG if the application offers color-mode choices.

Quick checklist before you send the JPG
- Open the output and confirm it displays correctly.
- Verify the file type is JPEG, not just the extension.
- Check dimensions, orientation, color and background.
- Confirm the file size and any upload limits.
- Keep the original WebP until the JPG has been accepted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting WebP to JPG improve image quality?
No. JPEG is a lossy format, so conversion cannot add detail that is absent in the WebP. Export once at an appropriate quality and avoid repeated saves.
Will a JPG keep a WebP’s transparent background?
No. JPEG has no transparency channel. Composite the image on a chosen background or retain the WebP/another transparency-capable format.
Recommended Free Tools
Is an online converter safe for private images?
Only use one whose privacy and retention terms you accept. For confidential files, an offline editor or command-line workflow keeps the source on your computer.
Why does my browser display WebP when I expected JPG?
Websites often deliver WebP because browsers support it and it can reduce delivery size. Save or export the image to JPEG when another application requires that format.
