Firefox’s Save Page As command is different: it creates an offline HTML archive, not a single WebP file.
This guide covers all three workflows, explains why a JPG-looking URL may download as WebP, and shows how to control quality, dimensions and file size.
Choose the output you actually need

Use the first method for one photograph or illustration, the second for a visual record of a page, and the third when you need an offline copy that still contains page files.
Save an image that the website already serves
In Firefox, right-click the image and choose Save Image As. Select a folder and save. The file type is the resource delivered by the server. If the site sends a WebP variant, Firefox saves a .webp file even when the page’s link or visible filename appears to reference JPG or PNG.

- Open the page and wait for the image to finish loading.
- Right-click the specific image, not the surrounding page.
- Select Save Image As.
- Choose the destination and keep the suggested extension unless you have a reason to convert it.
- Open the saved file in an image viewer to verify its actual format.
This downloads only that image. It does not preserve the page layout, text, menus or other assets.
When the saved filename says JPG but the file is WebP
Browsers advertise supported formats in the HTTP Accept request header. A server can respond with an equivalent WebP representation when the browser advertises image/webp. Native WebP support is available in current Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera; Google’s compatibility notes list lossy support beginning at Chrome desktop 17, Chrome for Android 25, Edge 18, Firefox 65, Opera 11.10 and Safari 14 (iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur).
Do not judge the encoding by the URL alone. Check the file’s properties or open it in a tool that reports the format.
Capture the whole rendered page, then make it WebP
A screenshot is the correct choice when you need one image showing the page as a visitor sees it. In Firefox, right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.

- Open Take Screenshot.
- Choose Full Page for the entire scrollable document, Visible for only the current viewport, or drag a region. Firefox also offers a highlighted page section when one is detected.
- Download the result. If Firefox gives you PNG, keep that original until you have checked the capture.
- Convert the PNG to WebP with
cwebpor an image editor.
Full-page captures can include content that appears only after scrolling. Lazy-loaded images, sticky headers and animations may therefore look different from a static viewport. Scroll through the page first when you need every lazy image to load, and wait for moving content to settle before capturing.
What a screenshot cannot preserve
- Text is no longer separate from the image and cannot be selected as page text.
- Links, forms, scripts and responsive layout do not remain interactive.
- A very long page produces a tall bitmap; the file can be large even after compression.
Convert PNG or JPEG to WebP with cwebp
Google’s reference libwebp tools include cwebp for encoding and dwebp for decoding. After installing the package for your operating system, run:
cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webpThe -q value is a quality setting from 0 to 100. A value of 80 is a practical starting point for a screenshot; raise it when text or fine details show visible artifacts, or lower it when file size matters more. JPEG input works the same way:
cwebp -q 80 photo.jpg -o photo.webpTo turn WebP back into PNG:
dwebp image.webp -o image.pngConversion is not guaranteed to reduce size. Google documents that a lossy source converted to lossless WebP, a lossless source converted to lossy WebP, or a target quality higher than the source effectively contains can all produce a larger file. Try a lower quality value or use a target-size option in your image editor. Repeated lossy conversions can also reduce detail.

Changing image.png to image.webp changes only the filename. It does not encode the pixels as WebP and can make the file unreadable. Always use an encoder such as cwebp or an editor’s export command, then inspect the output format and dimensions.

Do not use “Save Page As” for a WebP screenshot
Firefox’s Save Page As menu includes Web page, complete, Web page, HTML only, Text files and All files. Web page, complete writes an HTML file and a directory containing pictures, stylesheets and other assets. It is useful for an offline archive, but it is not one WebP image and may not reproduce server-side behavior, logged-in content or interactive scripts.

Quality, dimensions and file-size decisions
Lossy versus lossless
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation. Google Developers reports that lossless WebP files are 26% smaller than PNG on its documented comparison, while lossy WebP is 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG at equivalent quality. Those are documentation comparisons, not a promise for every screenshot or photograph.

Choose quality by content
- UI screenshots and text: start around
-q 80, inspect small text and icons, then increase quality if edges look soft. - Photographs: a lower quality may be visually acceptable and substantially smaller.
- Transparency: confirm that your converter preserves the alpha channel.
- Animation: a single screenshot captures one frame; use an animation-capable workflow if motion is required.
Control dimensions separately
Viewport width, device scale and image resizing affect both legibility and bytes. Capture at the width needed for the reader, then resize only after checking text. Enlarging a low-resolution screenshot cannot restore detail.
Troubleshooting
The download is WebP when I wanted the original JPEG
The server likely negotiated a WebP variant. Look for an “open image in new tab” or original-asset control supplied by the site. If the exact JPEG is unavailable, decode the WebP to PNG with dwebp, then export to JPEG; that creates a new JPEG and cannot recover details discarded by the WebP encoding.
The screenshot contains a blank section
The content may be lazy-loaded, blocked by a script, or still loading. Scroll through the page, wait, disable obstructive extensions and capture again. An automated service should wait for a selector, a delay or network idle and may need custom headers or cookies.
The WebP file is larger than PNG or JPEG
Check whether you selected lossless mode or a quality setting higher than the source supports. Try a lower quality value, remove unnecessary dimensions and compare the encoded files rather than their extensions.

The full-page capture is cut off
Some pages use nested scroll containers rather than the document scroll. Capture the relevant element by selector, temporarily expand the container with custom CSS, or use a screenshot tool that supports full-page rendering and element capture.

Confirm that the command completed without an error, that the output is not a zero-byte file and that the file signature matches WebP. Do not rely on renaming. For API downloads, check the HTTP status and save the response body only after a successful response; an error page saved as .webp is still HTML.
Practical decision checklist
- Need one image already displayed? Use Save Image As.
- Need one visual of the entire page? Use Take Screenshot → Full Page, then convert PNG to WebP.
- Need an editable offline copy? Use Save Page As → Web page, complete; accept that it is not WebP.
- Need recurring, parameterized captures? Use an API such as ScreenshotNeo and request WebP directly.
- Need a smaller file? Compare quality settings and dimensions; never rename extensions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a complete webpage as one WebP file and keep its links working?
No. WebP is a bitmap image. Saving the page as one WebP removes the separate HTML, links, scripts and form controls; use a complete HTML archive when those files matter.
Why does a WebP screenshot look different from the live page?
A screenshot records one rendering state. Fonts, animations, lazy-loaded content, viewport width, consent dialogs and logged-in state can all change what is visible at capture time.
Can WebP contain transparency or animation?
Yes, the format supports both, but the particular browser screenshot or conversion command must preserve those properties; a normal full-page screenshot is generally a single frame.
